Abstract

This research discusses the language ideology that is used in the advertisement published by Apple Inc. which is to promote Bazaart application software. The research objectives are to investigate the intentions, techniques and discursive strategies of the advertiser and to analyze the social practices within the discourse. To understand how text works to make meaning, the researcher adopted Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework and Halliday’s theory of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL). The research design is qualitative descriptive and the data source is in the form of social media captions posted by Apple Inc. on their Instagram page. The study applies a textual analysis to look at the advertiser’s strategies in using indirect language to attract readers’ interests. The findings reveal that direct language and imperative word choices are two dominant strategies used in most advertisements. That is to say, today, online advertisements are not enticing to audiences. The software advertisement delivered by Apple Inc. uses a slightly different strategy as they do not mention imperative words to persuade the readers to use Bazaart software. The result of this study is that social practices shown by language power in the advertisement delivered by the company can draw targeted readers’ interest.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the students’ perception of the effect of virtual learning during the covid-19 pandemic. The subject of this research is 40 students in the secretary program, consisting of students from urban and rural areas. The distribution course of the secretary program must be 70% of practice and 30% of theory. Therefore, this research reveals how they perceive virtual learning for those who have more training than theory courses. Employing an online survey using google forms, 12 qualitative questions in the questionnaire were delivered online. The result of the study shows that students’ perceptions of virtual learning are positive. They realise that virtual learning is the only solution to helping the smooth teaching and learning process. However, students feel burdened with the internet quota and signal quality. They still understand the material provided by the lecturer though they find difficulties regarding communication with their lecturers and handling study virtually. Students also faced challenges finding references, doing the assignment, and collecting the assignment. Those difficulties can be caused by their limited internet access. Meanwhile, they can easily use virtual applications since they belong to the ‘Z’ generation, familiar with the technology.

Abstract

The use of Bloom’s taxonomy to form knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and creation in choosing the type of reading test was to consider the role of higher and lower-order thinking skills in reading comprehension questions in English textbooks. The conceptual aspects of the reader's mental and visual response to the purpose of reading comprehension needs were the ability to generate new thoughts, separate ideas into parts, and judge the values of ideas by using appropriate criteria based on the text. This research contributed to the following questions: (1) the representation of Bloom’s taxonomy levels in English textbooks, and (2) the calculation of reading comprehension questions in each level of Bloom’s taxonomy. Using a qualitative approach with content analysis, the results showed that the types of reading comprehension questions could foster the student’s critical thinking regarding acquiring learning objectives in the English curriculum. Most of the question was focused on comprehension level (26%), knowledge/remember level (17%), application level (16%), synthesis level (14%), analysis level (13%), evaluation level (11%), and creation level (3%). By applying Bloom's taxonomy, English teachers were suggested to classify their instructional objectives and learning goals.

Abstract

The lexical meaning was the smallest meaning unit in the meaning system of language that could be distinguished from other similar units. A lexeme was an abstract unit that occurred in many different forms of spoken or written sentences. Lexical associations were considered more important in the headline in the newspaper because they formed a semantic relationship and related to the most problematic coherence as open-word in the form of noun and verb since the lexical meaning of the words had the same meaning in the context. This research aimed to examine the use of lexical meaning in the headline newspaper of the Jakarta Post. The result found that there were few words whose lexical meaning correlated to certain semantic roles. As two semantic roles were used in analyzing the data, it was obtained that synonym words existed in 13 words, its percentage toward the article was 3.01%; and hyponymy words existed in 10 words, its percentage toward the article was 2.32%. This result indicated that lexical relations such as synonymy and hyponymy might vary to perform functions between sentences and clauses. Choosing the correct definition of a lexical word could avoid misinterpreting the proposition of the reader’s interpretation. It was determined that the Jakarta Post, especially in the headline entitled “Jokowi highlights tolerance at cultural congress conclusion,” contained mostly synonym words, which meant most of the lexical meaning of the words had the same meaning in the context.

Abstract

The transition to online teaching has chaotic consequences for teachers and students, as many candidates are not ready for teaching duty. Unfortunately, several previous studies did not investigate pre-service teachers’ readiness to teach in online practicum. Additionally, the studies examining readiness, particularly on foreign language education programs through practicum, are limited. Therefore, the present study intends to investigate the pre-service foreign language program’s readiness to carry out teaching and learning processes in online practicum, especially in the ICT aspect. The study employs a qualitative research methodology. The setting of the study is an online practicum in a teacher education program in Semarang, Indonesia. The study participants are pre-service teachers taking online practicum, an estimated 130 participants based on the total population of the department selected. The data collection technique adopts an open-ended online survey conducted via Google Forms® and synchronous/ asynchronous interviews. The data collected from the questionnaire and interview is then analysed utilising a thematic analysis. The results of this research are supposed to contribute practically. All participants stated they were ready to have an online teaching practicum since they had already used it. They often use technology both for their daily needs and their studying needs.

Abstract

Language is one of the most important aspects of early childhood., and mastery of English in early childhood is not so easy to apply to children, so it is necessary to use appropriate and fun methods. The purpose of this study is to introduce children's English vocabulary from the phonological aspect through the singing method. This research was conducted with a descriptive qualitative approach. The research was conducted in Canden Hamlet, Jetis, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Samples were taken from 15 early childhood children aged 4-6 years. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, documentation, and interviews. The results showed that; (1) Improving the linguistic ability of young children, it can be done through the introduction of English vocabulary; (2) Introducing the English alphabet, the names of fruits, the names of animals, various colors, and so on, the most interesting is done by the singing method; (3) To develop linguistic skills by introducing English Vocabularies, it is effective to be taught from an early age.

Abstract

This study explores the techniques used in the audiovisual translation process of religious da’wah videos. The study used Molina and Albir translation techniques category. The study's object was three Youtube videos from Nouman Ali Khan Indonesia Channel, which focused on making subbed videos from Nouman Ali Khan Official Youtube Channel. The study discovers that the fan translators utilized varied techniques of translation. Every video at least had more than ten types of techniques, with the literal translation technique becoming the most used among all. The fansubbers also utilized other techniques to tackle the translation of Arabic data, such as omission, transliteration, and transcription. This study affirms that literal translation is a dominant technique applied for English-Indonesian translation. The Arabic data, however, comprise a small part of the finding, showing an interesting discovery as some techniques are unavailable in Molina and Albir categories. This study affirms the position of fansubber can apply different techniques of translation, although the literal translation is the most dominant one.

Abstract

Writing an undergraduate thesis is often a difficult challenge for college students. In this paper, I reflect on my writing experiences in my undergraduate thesis using journal review and stimulated recall to construct my understanding of auto-ethnography in writing an undergraduate thesis. I developed a chronology of the critical occasions during the time I constructed my thesis and reflected upon these events to investigate questions approximately whether my thesis was a piece of auto-ethnography or not. I analyze my experiences using critical incidents to get aha moments. By applying auto-ethnography theories from the experts, I conclude that my paper is a piece of auto-ethnography.

Abstract

Teacher talk otherwise opportunities for second language learning. However, teachers are often unaware how their talk in?uences opportunities for students’ language development in the classroom. This study explores teachers’ talk and its impact on young learners’ interaction in learning environment specifically in Raudhatul Athfal (RA) Muslimat Arif Rahman Jombang. This research using a qualitative design and the data collection techniques from recorded audio-visually; teachers’ talk transcripts; events or occasions which directly or indirectly influence the teachers’ talk. The researchers employ several instruments such as documentation, observation and interview. Data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions were used in the data analysis technique. The finding of this research from the indirect influence category, namely: (1) deals with feelings, (2) Praises or encourages, (3) Uses students’ ideas, and (4) Asks questions. While in the direct influence category, there are five sub categories namely: (1) Gives Information, (2) Corrects without rejections, (3) Gives directions, (4) Criticizes students’ behavior, and (5) Translating (code-switching). It encourages the teacher to look up-close at their teachers’ talk in order to raise their awareness of its impact on language learning.

Abstract

Modulation ??is seen as two different points of view in a similar situation. This research describes the modulation in the translation of idioms in the novel Rich People Problems. The material objects of the research were the English novel Rich People Problems and its Indonesian translation. The idioms were in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences found in the novels. The data-collecting process included reading and then underlining them. After the idioms were identified, their meanings were checked and verified using the idiom dictionaries. The idioms were analyzed by using the theory of Makkai (1972) and the modulation theory by Vinay and Darbelnet (1995). Phrasal verb idioms were not dominantly shifted though they are mostly found in the translation of idioms. In addition, modulation can have both narrowing and widening meanings in the target language. On the other hand, modulation mainly occurs in sentences or idioms that take the form of sentences or clauses.
