Abstract

Environmental conditions can have an impact on study habits. Meanwhile, various theories state that study habits have an impact on academic achievement. On the other hand, there are students who choose to live in dormitories (hostel living students) and there are also students who go home every day (day-scholar). Thus, this condition is assumed to have an impact on student’s academic achievement. The aim of this research is to investigate differences in academic achievement between hostel living students and day-scholars. The sample was 213 undergraduate students at the University of Peshawar, Pakistan (102 day-scholars and 112 hostel living students). Student study habits are measured by the Study Habits Inventory (SHI) developed by Jones & Slate (1990) and student academic achievement is measured by the Cumulative Achievement Index (GPA). The results showed that study habits significantly predicted increased student academic achievement. Hostel living students have higher scores in study habits and academic achievement compared to day-scholars. A significant positive correlation was found between study habits and academic achievement. This shows that the dormitory environment encourages focused learning and contributes to academic achievement. Interventions for day-scholars should target improved time management and accessible study spaces to improve study habits and academic achievement.

Abstract

Post-traumatic growth (PTG) in victims of bullying is an effort to understand how individuals can grow and develop after experiencing trauma due to acts of bullying. This study aims to determine the experience of PTG in victims of physical, verbal, cyber bullying and factors that influence an individual's ability to experience PTG after experiencing bullying. This study used a phenomenological approach and data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews. Informants were determined using purposive sampling technique based on criteria relevant to the research including: university students, have experienced bullying, have experienced trauma, and achieved post-traumatic growth. The research informants selected were five students who had experienced PTG due to bullying experiences. The results showed that traumatic experiences such as bullying can trigger a process of reflection, meaning making, and emotional growth that leads to positive changes in the victim, such as a stronger, independent, and confident attitude. The study also revealed that the most supportive factors in the PTG process are friends and family. Therefore, a supportive social environment is very important for victims of bullying to achieve PTG.

Abstract

This study explores the role of emotional intelligence and empathy on the general health of counselors in the Accra metropolis. The aim of the study is to determine the predictive relationship between emotional intelligence, empathy, and general health and to identify demographic predictors on emotional intelligence, empathy, and general health. In a cross-sectional case study, 133 purposively selected counselors from Accra Metropolis were administered an online self-report survey questionnaire that consisted of Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, Empathy Scale and General Health Questionnaire. Findings revealed that emotional intelligence and empathy significantly predict general health. A significant positive correlation exists between emotional intelligence and general health, while a clinical significance of a positive correlation exists between emotional intelligence and empathy. Again, no significant difference was found between the general health of male and female counselors. No significant difference was found in the scores for empathy and emotional intelligence for licensed professional counselors and licensed lay counselors. Since safeguarding the counselor’s health is ethically imperative due to the effect on professional competence, it is recommended that counselors and training institutions deepen effort in creating awareness on the need to protect the health of counselors for the benefit of clients and the high regard of the counseling profession.
