Abstract

This study deals with the shift of addressing term of Mandailingnese society in Panyabungan. It employs qualitative research design with a case study. This study aims to describe: (1) the types of shift occur in the use of addressing terms by Mandailingnese speaker in Panyabungan, (2) the pattern of the shift of addressing term and (3) Reasons of Mandailingnese shift the addressing term in Panyabungan. The subjects were 20 respondent from second generation of parents group. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire and interview. The data was analyzed by Miles and Hubermans’ data analysis. There are fourteen respondent (70%) shif completely the addressing term in core family, two respondent (10%) shift partly the addressing term and four respondent (20%) maintain the addressing term. The shift of ddressing terms cover three types; ten respondents (50%) do not participate actively in the life of minority language, three respondents (15%) are not fluent in Mandailing language and seven respondents (35%) those are influenced by their parents to shift the addressing term. There are five patterns of the shift of addressing terms and three reasons why Mandailingnese society shift the addressing term; status of Indonesian language, social success and family tradition. Abstract

English teaching is the main key to support the success of world interaction. The success in mastering English facilitates togetherness among people around the globe. Therefore freedom is needed in learning and understanding language as a whole. The teacher can use some methods in teaching and learning process to help the students’ understanding. In this research, the researcher practiced a game which is named What Would You Do (WWYD). This research problems were; (1) is there any influence of WWYD game to the students’ speaking skill at second semester of STIT Muhammadiyah, Tanjung Redeb?, (2) Is there any influence of drilling vocabulary to the students’ speaking skill at second semester of STIT Muhammadiyah, Tanjung Redeb?, and (3) Is there any influence of WWYD game and drilling vocabulary simultaneously to the students’ speaking skill at second semester of STIT Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb?. The method of this research is partial correlation method, specifically to find out whether WWYD game (i.e. independent variable/X1) and Drilling vocabularies (i.e. control variable/X2) have correlation to the students’ speaking skill (i.e. dependent variable/Y). In the end of this research shown that WWYD game and drilling vocabulary can facilitate and help the students getting a confident in speaking about their opinion in English, and the statistic value performed in level good correlation between WWYD game used to the students’ speaking skill during conducted for second semester at STIT Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb.

Abstract

In this era of Globalization, English Language is important for our lives. In fact, it is the second most spoken language in the world. Globalization made the use of English language more widen. The ability to speak and to write English property has been one essential benchmark skills in the professional world. The teacher can use some methods in teaching and learning process to help the students’ understanding. In this research, the researcher used role play technique and drilling vocabulary to enhance speaking skill. This research problems were; (1) Is there any influence of role play technique to the students’ speaking ability at SMA MUHAMMADIYAH TANJUNG REDEB?, (2) Is there any influence of drilling vocabulary to students’ speaking ability at SMA MUHAMMADIYAH TANJUNG REDEB?, (3) Is there any influence of role play technique and drilling vocabulary to the students’ speaking ability at SMA MUHMAMMADIYAH TANJUNG REDEB?. The method of this research is partial correlation method, The statistic value performed in level good correlation among Role play technique and drilling vocabulary to the students’ speaking ability during conducted for twelve at SMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb.

Abstract

This research focus in eighth grade is VIII A and VIII B. the researcher used Peer teaching technique to prove that students taught to use Peer teaching technique better and positively affect students' speaking ability than students taught by using Ordinary way in the eighth grade at SMP 1 Teluk Bayur, the specifics problems discussed in the following formulated questions; (1) What is the students’ performance of pretest and posttest between control and experimental groups?, (2) Is there any significant difference between pretest and posttest performance of the control and experimental groups? This research used Experimental method. This research was conducted from February 22th 2019 to 25th March 2019 in second grade at SMPN 1 Teluk Bayur. The research using Peer teaching technique to improve students’ speaking ability. The Instrument’s research is test, in the test there are Pre-test, treatment and Post-test. Data analysis was scoring, normality, homogeneity, finding mean, and demonstrated T-Test.

Abstract

English language has been commonly accepted as an active universal language in the world. People who study English language consider it as their personal proficiency. Therefore, nowadays many people, particularly students, ought to master English language. Mastering English language is an important value for the students to have. Refers to the condition, the researcher interested to help student to master English specially reading comprehension, and this research would find the following questions; Is there any influence of duolingo application used to the students’ reading comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb?, (1) Is there any influence of vocabulary enhancement to the students’ reading comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb?, (1) Is there any influence of duolingo application used and vocabulary enhancement to the students’ reading comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah Tanjung Redeb?. The method of this research is partial correlation method, then to analyze the data used normality, homogeneity, linearity, partial correlation and regression equation.

Abstract

The motivating basis of the study was generated from the fact that there is still little known about the research investigating request strategies in student’s requestive emails in Indonesian context in which the status of English is as a foreign language (EFL). This study intends to examine student’s pragmalinguistic competence realized in request strategies when emailing their lecturers as well as exploring their consideration in choosing certain linguistic means in their email. Case study was employed to get clear description of this particular case. Then, the CCARP framework was utilized to analyze 30 requestive emails composed by 15 students, and qualitative analysis was also applied to draw conclusion from student’s interview. The findings indicated that direct strategies such as mitigated imperative and want statements were mostly realized in more of student’s requestive emails. Moreover, social factors such as age, power, status, and distance become student’s reasons in choosing certain linguistic choices when emailing their lecturers. This present study finally offers some recommendations that can be applied in foreign language setting.

Abstract

One of the active skills required not only in the field of academe for students but also in the industry world with degree holder employees that cause predicament in both areas is writing. Writing is one of the hurdles of different companies with their degree holder employees. Similarly, in the context of the academe, it is also found by previous studies that students are coping in writing academic essays and other writing outputs. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of interactive writing technique in intensifying basic writing skills to produce competent employees both in the academe and in the business world. This study also sought to address the predicament of students’ and employees’ low-level proficiency in basic writing. Interactive Writing is a collaborative technique used to enhance the level of proficiency when it comes to the organization of ideas, diction, elaboration, support and writing mechanics. Purposively, using these objectives: To investigate the level of English major’s writing proficiency in pre-test and post-test along with content, mechanics, organization, diction, elaboration, and support; to identify the level of effectiveness of the interactive technique and be able to establish an output based on the research findings. The study used a mixed-method design. Three phases of data gathering procedure were employed namely; pre-test, intervention, and post-test. Pre-test and Post-test were compared using the t-test and analyzed using the Error Density Index of Malicsi (2018). Results of the study unveil that students writing in the post-test improved from the pre-test general weighted mean of 2.28 interpreted as "developing" to 2.58 general weighted mean in the post-test interpreted as "approaching proficiency", indicating that there is an improvement in the writing proficiency of the students after various interventions using the Interactive Writing Technique. Moreover, these results were advertised and employed in producing a teacher and student module to continuously strengthen and amplify student's basic writing skills.

Abstract

Mystery, as viewed by the society, is usually stated by an outsider in a certain locality who sees unusual occurrence thus, series of inquiry is rolled down to seek for understanding of a phenomenon that cannot be answered by science hence, can be unlocked through the collective narratives that the folks treasured and continuously shared. These narratives form part of folklore in a society that is bound to vanishing when left undocumented. An hour travel from the heart of Masbate is where the small town Uson in which a Balawarte is found. This is a symbolic rock-sculpture of Mary on the seaside of the town of Uson but has created a lot of stories therein which form part to answer the mystery. This ignited the researchers to explore the significant narratives on this existing phenomenon. Through this, the researchers explored the historical and cultural significance of Balwarte in Uson. Also, the researchers inquired about the different narratives of it. The study is an ethnographic and folkloristic approach were used such as structured and unstructured interviews to gather the narratives. The narratives were transcribed and analyzed using Thematic Analysis to get the historical, cultural, and folkloristic contribution of it in society.

Abstract

It is obvious that the use of learning strategy is a crucial element for EFL in studying English. Learning strategy becomes a tool for language learner in order to enhance their learning. An active application of language learning helps students in managing their own learning by developing language skill, increasing confidence and improving autonomous learning. Each of learners has different strategy to be applied in their classroom and daily life. The main objective of this study is to investigate the strategy of learning English conducted by the first year students of English teaching department of STAIN Mandailing Natal. This study was quantitative approach which carried out on the sample of 30 participants. All those participants are the first year students of English Teaching Department State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Mandailing Natal, Sumatera Utara. To obtain the data, researcher used two instruments namely: questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire consists of 26 questions which taken from blue print of strategy inventory for language learning (SILL). Interview is used to obtain deep and detail information about the application of learners’ learning strategy. Based on the data analysis, it is reasonable to state that most of the learners used metacognitive strategy in learning English as foreign language.

Abstract

This research deals with language acquisition. It aims to describe what types of complex sentences are produced by five years old Kindergarten students in their social interaction. The methodology of this research uses Qualitative Research where the researcher involved six kindergarten students of five years old in RA Fatayat Nahdhatul Ulama Batahan as data sources. The data of this research was obtained by using the naturalistic method by observing, making a conversation, recording, and taking notes. The result found that the Five years old kindergarten students already produced a noun clause, relative clause, and adverbial clause as subordinate clause or dependent clause to modify or give more explanation about the main clause or independent clause to produce complex sentences. And they also used a coordinating conjunction and subordinating conjunction to join the dependent clause to the independent clause, or they just used an intonation to separate between dependent clause from independent clause.
