Abstract

This study was carried out to analyze the types and the sources of grammatical errors encountered in Acehnese EFL learners’ essays. It focused on finding out the most dominant type of errors and the most plausible explanation for the source of errors the students made in their writing. Twenty (20) learner’s essays were collected to be analyzed by referring to Azar’s error classification as well as Richard’s theory on learners’ sources of the errors. The results showed that the most frequent type of errors in the learners’ essays were incomplete sentences and verb tenses, making up more than a third (36.7%) of the total 392 errors. The findings also showed intralingual errors are the major causes of the learners’ grammatical errors, followed by interference errors and developmental errors respectively. The findings suggest that in teaching essay writing, teachers of Indonesian-Acehnese EFL learners need to adopt and devise more appropriate techniques in both grammar and writing instructions, focusing on complete sentence structure and tenses in order to minimize the possible errors made by the learners in their writing.

Abstract

There is now a growing tendency among Indonesian people to introduce English to children starting from the early age, through either formal or informal education. This can be seen from the mushrooming of bilingual and international schools where English is used as the language of instruction as well as the increasing number of English courses aimed especially for children. Sometimes people hold a misconception regarding teaching English for young learners, in which they believe that the earlier the kids learn a foreign language, the better it will be. As a matter of fact, this assumption is not completely true. Only when handled with care will the teaching of foreign language to young learners succeed as expected? Otherwise, this will not gain a significant effect on children’s language development. This paper will elaborate some principles on how young learners learn a foreign language, which should be the foundation of the way the teaching English to young learners is conducted. Some theories on how children learn will be drawn on, followed by a discussion on the pedagogical implications. This paper is expected to give insights to English teachers in general and teachers of English for young learners in particular, about the importance of taking into account the aspects related to the way young learners learn in designing their teaching learning process.

Abstract

This study aims at addressing English teacher’s perspective about integrating WhatsApp (WA) into a university-level English class in STAIN Mandailing Natal. The data includes interviews with the teacher and observation on class postings in WA group and student-teacher timeline for four meetings. The data were analyzed qualitatively, and interpretively, resulting in three emerging themes about the WA to teach English remotely in low-tech classroom: the implementation of WA for online teaching, managing online learning activities in WA group and teacher’s constrains in applying WA in teaching online. The result of analysis indicates that WA is considered effective to teach English remotely in a limited internet connection classroom. With some adjustments to the instructional design, teaching and learning process could run well. However, due to the lack of students-teacher direct interaction, virtual class could not go as engaging as face-to-face learning in the classroom.
