Abstract

Second language (L2) learners are different. They learn with different speed and different results. There are many explanations for that issue. The general factors that influence second language learning are: age, aptitude and intelligence, cognitive style, attitudes, motivation and personality. The aim of this article is to present age as one of the internal factor and its contribution to success or failure in language learning.

Abstract

Teachers should bring literary works into the class because teachers will be able to teach literacy by introducing the kinds of literary works and having some theories about literary criticisms to promote literacy development. Teachers and students go through that process together in class, step by step, from choosing literary works to sharing responses with others by encouraging students to examine their own emotions and responses as they are reading. Thus the writer talks about how all of the above components are the vehicles for expressing and transmitting students’ responses and feelings so that it can help the teachers to teach literacy. Teachers ask students to bring her or his experience, knowledge, and feelings to the novel when she or he reads, and creates a unique relationship or a unique reality and responds to it. When students as readers talk and write about the literary works, the students further the conversation, and continue the act of creation. If class members listening to students’ report are intrigued by, or angered by, or moved by the readers’ responses, these listeners may speak out, and/or read the book themselves, with the original readers’ comments in mind, thus continuing the ongoing conversation and process.Teachers should bring literary works into the class because teachers will be able to teach literacy by introducing the kinds of literary works and having some theories about literary criticisms to promote literacy development. Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine students’ summarizing strategies in writing summaries from multiple texts. A total of 30 students from the group of high-ability and low-ability based on TOEIC scores were invited to participate in this study for data collection using writing summary task. The participants were taught summary writing using concept mapping strategies. The summarizing strategies of the students were collected through think aloud protocol and questionnaire. This study suggests that explicit instruction in the use of concept mapping strategies during summarizing was crucial to improve the quality of their summaries. This study indicates some differences in the strategies employed by the students of the two different groups. Information about successful strategies employed by high ability students in writing a summary can be used to teach low ability students.

Abstract

This is a survey research about the importance of introducing potential tourism destination through writing activity on the basis of the students’ perceptions. The researchers try to find out the importance of introducing potential of tourism destination; to find out the role of writing activity in terms of the potential of tourism destination; and to find out the importance of introducing the potential of tourism destination through writing activity. The population of this research was the students of English Department, State Polytechnic of Sriwijaya, in academic year 2014/2015. The samples which were taken by using purposive sampling were the students of semester three. The results showed that introducing the potential tourism destination especially the ones located in South Sumatera was very important because the province of South Sumatera has a potential tourism destinations which were deserved to be promoted; there was enough effort from the government to introduce the potential tourism destination; It will give revenue for the country; it will create jobs for the community; it will boost economic growth and living standards; and it will stimulate the productivity of other sectors. The roles of writing activity in terms of potential tourism destination were introducing the wealth and the beauty of the nature, the hospitality and the uniqueness of local community, culture, heritage, culinary, and the cultural varieties of the local community to public. Abstract

The problem of this research is formulated as follows: “is it significantly effective to use a picture dictionary in teaching the meanings of verbs to the second year students?” therefore, the objectives of this investigation is to find out if it is significantly effective to use the picture dictionary in teaching the meanings of verbs to the students. The populations of this research was the second year students of SMP PGRI 7 Palembang in the academic year of 2004?2005. the number of the population was 22 students and the sample was all 22 students. The investigation was done through the quasi-experimental method, that is to describe the fact based on the data, which the writer got from the test. The test was given in two forms, matching and completion questions. The only technique used in collecting the data was a written test in the form of the pre-test and the post-test. The data were analyzed through  the formula of the  matched t-test. The result of this study indicated that after being taught the meanings of verbs, with their semantic picture using the given picture dictionary. Their average scores improved from the “poor” level (5) to the “ fair” level (6.75). it was supported by the result of the data analysis showed that the “t” obtained (1.902) exeeceded (1.895) as its critical value. It means the Ho was rejected and the Ha was accpeted. In other words, it was effective to usse the picture dictionary in teaching the meanings of verbs to the second year students at SMP PGRI 7 Palembang in the academic year of 2004/2005.

Abstract

Listening was previously considered as passive skill but now that assumption has been neglected. Lack of adequate exposure to listening and dearth of attention with regard to these issues sets the ground for authentic listening materials to fill the gaps in EFL context. Authentic materials – unsolicited, spontaneous,  natural and covering a wide spectrum of styles from formal to very informal, can truthfully reflect the real life language, narrow the distance between the learners and the target language used in reality, it becomes increasingly attractive to language experts, classroom practitioners and the learners. The fundamental purpose of this paper is to present the power of authentic materials as effective solutions for listening ability in students of English as a foreign language. The authentic materials could be a great help in reaching the goal of improving listening skill and is going to be discussed in greater detail in this paper.

Abstract

Language is a tool for a person to represent and express themselves to others. Lacan (2008) believes that human subjects cannot exist without language, but the subject cannot be reduced to language. This power of language is used by WS Rendra. Through language, Rendra is able to express his ideology and views on social world chaos around him. The purposes of this article are to reveal the habitus which influence Rendra in making Mastodon dan Burung Kondor as well as the capital getting by Rendra on the ban of play performance and the effect of it toward his career trajectory in Indonesian literature arena. The method used in this study is library research and analytical descriptive. From the analyses, it can be summarized that Rendra's dissident mental and the events in 1970 become habitus in making Mastodon dan Burung Kondor. Meanwhile, the capital obtained by Rendra is symbolic capital.

Abstract

Test is a systematic procedure for observing person and describing them with either a numerical scale or a category system. A test is given to know the students’ achievement on their learning. There is a test affects on  teaching and learning which is called backwash. Backwash  could be positive and negative. Negative washback involve the teacher, students and the school’s program. However, if the assessment of the tesr reflects the skill and content taught in the classrom, the positive washback will be occured.
