Abstract

The t h i r d s e m e s t e r students o f Early Childhood Education Department of STKIP Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai Riau had problem in speaking E n g l i s h . The purpose of this research is to improve the students speaking skill and also to know the factors influence the students speaking skill. The participants of this research are 22 students of the third semester of the Early Childhood Education Department of STKIP Pahlawan Tuanku Tambusai Riau. The research is classroom action research which was done in two cycles with four meetings. Each cycle consists of plan, action, observation, and reflection. The result of this study shows that using movies in teaching and learning English can improve the students speaking skill. Based on the data, the mean score of the students speaking skill as well as the increasing of the mean score of speaking skill indicators namely accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The average score was 60 in pre research, 66.3 in cycle I, and 71.4 in cycle II. The factors that influenced the students speaking skill are material, media, classroom activity, classroom management, teachers approach, and teachers strategy. It means, there is improvement on the students speaking skill.

Abstract

Reference is one component for comprehending a reading text. This research employed descriptive method. The purpose of the research was to find out the students’ ability in using reference in reading narrative text. The subject of the research was twenty two students of fourth semester of 2015/2016 STIBA Persada Bunda Pekanbaru. The instrument used to collect the data was in the form of multiple tests. From the finding, it was found that: (1) The students’ ability in using personal reference was in good category. They had problems in mastering personal reference which refers forward or cataphora reference (2) the students’ ability in using demonstratives reference in narrative texts was in good category. The problems occurred because they had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ ability in using reference in narrative text still needed to be improved because they still had limited vocabulary and lack of motivation.

Abstract

Learning method inovation will influence learning media used and it is hoped to improve learning qualities. This research was done to know the students activities in learning critical listening by using interactive multimedia and to measure the effetiveness of that multimedia in improving students listening skill. The data was taken through test, observation, and interview. The result of the research were (1) the students created active, creative, and effective learning process independenly in measuring and developing each step of listening learning model. (2) Interactive multimedia was effective learning media to improve students listening skill. It could be seen from improving listening skill in limited test at experiment class was 42,98%, whereas at control class the rise was only 7,36%. For extensive test, the improving of listening skill at experiment class was 33,88%, while control class was only up at 2,62%. . (3) Learning media with interactive multimedia can improve students listening skill than audio learning media because listening is not only aural aspet but also visual aspect integrated with multimedia.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berjudul A Picture Of The Main Characters Loyalty Toward Her Marriage inLetter from Peking Novelby Pearl S.Buckditulis untuk mengetahui ide loyalitas. Loyalitas memiliki peran penting dalam kehidupan pernikahan. Masalah yang akan diteliti adalah bagaimana ide loyalitas terungkap dalam surat dari Peking. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi, menganalisis dan memberikan penjelasan tentang ide-ide loyalitas terungkap melalui karakter wanita utama, Elizabeth dalamnovel Letter from Peking. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif. Pendekatan intrinsik diterapkan dalam menganalisis karakter loyalitas terhadap pernikahannya dengan menggunakan teori Robert, pengaturan dan plot. Untuk menganalisis ide-ide, penulis menggunakan pendekatan ekstrinsik, teori hubungan antara sastra dan ide dari Wellek dan Warren. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagian besar tindakan yang dilakukan oleh loyalitas seorang wanita dalam pernikahannya menunjukkan dirinya sebagai sosok perempuan yang kuat di mana ia mampu memasuki seluruh aspek hidupnya. Dia adalah seorang wanita Amerika, yang sangat cinta dengan seorang pria setengah Cina dan Amerika. Karena pendudukan komunis di Peking dia harus meninggalkan suaminya. Dia mencintai budaya Cina yang terus hidup di hatinya. Situs loyalitas terungkap melalui karakter, plot dan pengaturan. Juga, hubungan antara tradisi Cina dan latar belakang Cina yang situasinya pada tahun 1957 diidentifikasi untuk menemukan ide-ide loyalitas.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to describe the influence of Text and Drill Method in improving the students ability in learning tenses. Based on preliminary observation in previous semester, the students English department was weak in applying tenses in sentence. Thus, this research was trying to find the whether the method text and drill can improve their ability in learning tenses or not as well as to find out the factors that influence its improvement. The type of this research was using Classroom Action Research method. The technique of collecting and analyzing the data was using test, observation, interview and field note. The result of this research is there was significant improving of the students ability in learning tenses by using text and drill method. Besides, the factors that influence their improving is the learning strategy that the lecture gave during the process of learning, the material that was used, and the media that support in teaching learning the tense.
