Abstract

The title of this writing is “The application of Electronic Short Story in TOEFL Learning for Lecturers of University of Lancang Kuning.” The purpose of the writing is to socialize the use of strategy of Electronic Short Story Application, to increase participants’ motivation. To apply the strategy, the method used is describing and practicing. The result shows that lecturers get better motivation and comprehension in learning English for TOEFL preparation using the strategy of Electronic Short Story.

Abstract

Technology now has become part of human life. In education, technology is as medium to support English Language Learning. One of this media is VOA Special English Education Report. This media is believed can increase students speaking skillin English. The problem is, how many times they should listening VOA Speacial Engish Education Report in order to improve their speaking English. Therefore, this research was aimed to find out whether the habitual of listening VOA Speacial English Education Report can improve the students‘ competence in Speaking Engllish. The sample of this research is ten students of Computer science . They were devided into two groups. Five students was asked to watch the VOA Special English Education Report everyday during three months continuously while another five students was asked to watch the VOA Special English once a week during three months. The result of this research, the speaking test of five students who watched the video everyday during two hours every week have better score rather than the students who wacthed the VOA Special Engish Education Report once a week during four hours. The method of this research is quallitative research. The data was collected by using scoring test which this score is purposed to describe the different significant score between two groups of students. Another data to support this research is the students activity note book during three months. Thus, the implication of this research that the habitual listening of VOA Specia English Education Report continuously can effect students‘ speaking skill in English especially in speaking.

Abstract

English is a Foreign Language as a subject that has been studying since elementary level. However, there were found minimal skill competence of speaking in Engish. Thus, it needs improvement both from the media system used and the appropriate strategy for the English course as a general basic course in particular in the Faculty of Computer Science. Technology can be an alternative as the media in education prosess. One of these media is Voice of America Special English Education Report. Basicaly, there are several benefits of using this media such as listening; while they are listening VOA automatically they are studying how to pronounce something; another skill is reading and writing skill because this media supported by running text. Thus, automatically this media includes four language skill in English. The subject of this research is Computer science students second semester. The purpose of this research is to find out whether the use of VOA Special English Education report can improve students’ speaking skill in English. The data was collected by applying the speaking test which used rubric scoring. The method of this research is classroom action research. There were two cycles of the test as comparative the improvement of students’ speaking skill in using VOA Special English Education Report . The result of this research that there is significant improvment of using VOA Special English Education Report. The score of the first cycle is 56,8 and the second cyce is 64,8. It means that there is increasing of the score speaking test by using the media VOA Special Engilsh Education Report.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out and explain the using of power point presentation in improvingstudents’ reading comprehension of short functional texts and to find out and explain the factors that influences the changes of students’ reading comprehension of short functional texts. Design of this research was classroom action research. The researcher used test as instrument that was reading texts. The result of analyzing data showed that the students’ scores could increase the students’ reading comprehension of short functional text. This improvement is influenced by several factors. The first factor is material. The choice of material which can invite the students’ interaction is very important. The material of reading short functional text should be new, various and relevant with the students’ reality life. Thus, it can make them interested in watching the material.

Abstract

There are many technology-based media that can use in learning English. One of them is the English version of Upin Ipin which can download from YouTube. The purpose of this study is to describe the ability of students to study, analyze and translate moral values ​​contained in each episode of the Upin Ipin cartoon series. The research method taken is a qualitative method in which the ability of students to describe the value of moral tests using tests and ruptures. The results of this study were the first of 31 students 22 people were able to explain moral values ​​well, and 3 people were excellent

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The aim of this research is to describe the influence of Text and Drill Method in improving the students ability in learning tenses. Based on preliminary observation in previous semester, the students English department was weak in applying tenses in sentence. Thus, this research was trying to find the whether the method text and drill can improve their ability in learning tenses or not as well as to find out the factors that influence its improvement. The type of this research was using Classroom Action Research method. The technique of collecting and analyzing the data was using test, observation, interview and field note. The result of this research is there was significant improving of the students ability in learning tenses by using text and drill method. Besides, the factors that influence their improving is the learning strategy that the lecture gave during the process of learning, the material that was used, and the media that support in teaching learning the tense.

Abstract

Artikel ini berbagi hasil evaluasi dari sebuah pendekatan inovatif yang coba diterapkan di jurusan bahasa Inggris FKIP Unilak, dimana persepsi pengguna blog yakni mahasiswa di dua semester yang berbeda akan menjadi titik fokus dalam penelitian ini. Blog merupakan homepage interaktif yang mudah untuk dikelola memungkinkan siswa untuk terlibat dalam kegiatan online, sehingga memperluas kegiatan pembelajaran bahasa mereka melebihi jika belajar didalam kelas. Blogging bisa juga mendorong proses pembelajaran yang lebih otonom. Temuan dari survei sikap dan persepsi yang dilakukan selama dua semester dengan sebelas kelas dengan jumlah mahasiswa sebanyak 168 akan tetapi dalam masa pengumpulan data dari angket online terdapat 145 mahasiswa yang mengisi angket yang terdiri dari 127 mahasiswa jurusan bahasa Inggris serta 18 mahasiswa dari group ekskul Blogger yang terdiri dari jurusan yang berbeda-beda. Dari hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa mereka memiliki persepsi yang positif dan mendukung penggunaan blog sebagai media atau strategi pembelajaran peningkatan kemampuan bahasa Inggris di dalam kelas mereka

Abstract

Socialization of the decorative variety of Malay architectural buildings in Rantau Village can be useful to introduce cultural heritage in the form of Malay architectural buildings that have unique shapes. The implementation of the socialization introduces and provides understanding to the Rantau Bais village community about the cultural potential that can be developed into a cultural tourism destination. The socialization was carried out by presenting village officials, community leaders, tribal leaders and Tourism Awareness groups in one meeting and in the field. To determine the participants' understanding, pretest and posttest were conducted. From the results of the socialization from the beginning, many participants did not know about the potential and uniqueness of Malay architects in house buildings.

Abstract

Menulis telah menjadi bagian dan kewajiban dari seorang guru. Keahlian menulis merupakan salah satu empat skill yang harus dikuasai dalam ilmu Bahasa. Sehingga menulis sebuah penelitian menjadi kewajiban bagi seorang guru yang akan naik pangkat atau golongan. Dalam hal ini, telah menjadi syarat mutlak bagi guru yang mengurus kepangkatan ke golongan IVA untuk menulis sebuah penelitian Tindakan kelas. Namun banyak ditemukan permasalahan dilapangan, beberapa diantaranya guru yang enggan belajar menulis dikarenakan kurangnya pembiasaan dalam menulis karya ilmiahm banyak guru yang berdalih sudah berumur, hingga guru yang meminta bantuan joki untuk memudahkan pekerjaan mereka. Kegiatan ini memberikan solusi berupa penggunaan aplikasi Mendeley dalam menulis PTK. Metode kegiatan ini dilakukan dengan dua tahap yaitu teori berupa penjelasan tentang PTK dan aplikasi Mendeley dan praktik langsung dilapangan penggunaan Mendeley dalam menulis PTK. Adapun hasil yang ditemukan dalam kegiatan ini bahwa guru menyambut positif kegiatan penulisan PTK dengan menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley. Sehingga guru dapat terbantu dalam mengutip sumber dan referensi yang sering digunakan dalam penulisan karya tulis ilmiah khususnya PTK.

Abstract

Facebook is a sharing tool in the form of social networks. One way to share is by making a post or uploading a photo added by a caption. This study analyzes errors that often occur in facebook posts by internet users who have a background in English or English Literature Education. Therefore, this study aims to describe the level of error especially in the field of the grammatical structure using the automatic grammar checker application. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research methods that explain the level of grammar errors in one's facebook posts. The results of this study were 42 samples taken that 78.5% of posts in English on Facebook were still problematic in the grammatical structure.
