Abstract

This study discussed about using Pictionary game to improve students’ vocabulary mastery to the third grade students of SDN 022 Rumbio. The data were gathered from classroom observations and interview. The analysis showed how Pictionary game gave an improvement in pronouncing, knowing and memorizing words. It provided opportunities for students to improve the vocabulary mastery as well as motivation to help the teacher managing classroom interaction. It also enabled the students to experience the vocabulary; they made noticeable progress in their vocabulary learning, gaining the confidence to pronounce word in pronouncing. In short, this study showed that Pictionary game promoted students active participation in the activities with more opportunities to improve their vocabulary through practice which in turn increased their positive attitude for language learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the students’ skill of XI Grade IPA 2 of SMAN 1 SALO in writing narrative text. The sample of this research is the second grade students of SMAN 1 SALO. The class consists of 20 students, the researcher used total sampling technique to determine the sample research. The research is a descriptive qualitative research. The purpose of this research is to describe the students’ writing skill of narrative text. This research was done with some steps. The steps are collecting the data, analyzing the data, making conclusions, and reporting result. The result of the research showed that the students’ writing skill of narrative text at second grade of SMAN 1 SALO in Excellent Category was 0%, in Good Category was 0%, in Fairly Good Category was 30%, in Weak Category was 55%, and in Poor Category was 15%. So, it can be concluded that the students’ writing skill in narrative text at second grade of SMAN 1 SALO was weak.

Abstract

Dealing with the importance of having oral communication ability in English in the worldwide today, the thought on the importance of being able to speak in English is a must to survive in the fieldwork. The ability to speak in English in term of foreign language brings the advantage by those who are able to speak. In the fieldwork today, people who have ability to speak in foreign language, English particularly has some opportunities to compete in the fieldwork. However, it is not easy to acquire English and to use it in oral communication. Some factor plays on it, cognitive such as the competence on using the language, the ability to acquire the English skill, and also psychological. Mostly, the factors cause people’s inability to communicate orally is not people’s competence on the language, but psychological. It rises as the consequences on the present of communication setting. Since communication involves some elements such as audience, medium and others, it raises the students’ mental experiences definitely, in term of communication, namely apprehension. The students who enroll presentation class at Riau Islamic University experiences mental block during the presentation class. Consequently, experiencing oral communication apprehension causes the students’ difficulties in communication.

Abstract

Write Pair Share technique is one of interesting techniques that can be used in teaching writing. Through write pair share, the students have to write any ideas about the topic given, they work in pair to combine ideas, proofreading process, and then shared to their class by submitting the production of narrative story in written form. The purpose of this research is to know the students’ writing ability to write Narrative Text by using write pair share technique. The population of this research is 34 students of X-5 in SMAN 2 Kuok. By using Classroom Action Research, the writer has done two cycle process. After the learning process, the result of first cycle shows that five students who got very good criteria (15%), 19 students who got good criteria (56%), five students who got fair criteria (15%), and five students who got poor criteria (14%). In the second cycle, one student (2.94%) is poor, one student (2.94%) is fair, eight students (23.53%) are good, 18 students (52.94%) are very good and six students (17.65%) are excellent. In conclusion, there are six students get the score under the minimal standard score (≥75) or 82.35% students get higher score than 75. It indicates that write pair share technique is an appropriate technique that can improve students’ writing ability to write narrative text.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether an effect of using video as a media toward students’ speaking skill at tenth grade of SMA 1 SALO, in academic year of 2017/2018. This research was classified as a quasi-experimental method. It involved 54 students of two groups. The experimental group was taught by using video and control group was taught using the conventional method. The data were obtained by using pre-test and post-test. After the data were tested and found to be normal but not homogeneous, the hypothesis was tested using the ANOVA test. The results of the research show that there is an effect in the speaking skill between the students who were taught by using video and those who were taught by using the conventional method. In ANOVA test it can be seen that (F-value = 53,209> F-table = 2,380 or sig = 0.000 < 0.05), and Significance (2-tailed) calculated (0.000) is smaller than 0.05. Therefore, the hypothesis of this study is accepted. In conclusion, the use of video as a media gave an effect to the students’ speaking skill in English teaching at SMA 1 SALO.
