Abstract

This study aims to reveal what kinds of anxiety happen to Hazel. The causes of her anxiety can be seen first appear at the age of 13 when she was diagnosed of having a lung cancer, since then she is always thought about dying because the pain she felt rise her anxiety to die and it has a big impact toward people around her. Especially her parents and boyfriend cause she is worry that she will hurt people around. It is reflected in John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars. This research is classified as a qualitative research because the data gathered are in the form of words as the quotation that taken from the source. The writer collects the data from two kinds of sources. Primary source the novel itself and secondary sources is another references related to the novel like books and internet. The writer applied psychological approach because it is very close with human life such as feeling.The result of this research shows that there are 2 kinds of anxiety that appear, state anxiety and trait anxiety. State anxiety is one of anxiety that arise due to the dangerous situation. It can appear to Hazel as a cancer patient because she might be felt worry about the treatement and feel threatened. Meanwhile trait anxiety referes to anxiety as a characteristic of a person, so that person is generally anxious about unknown outcomes. Hazel seem to have trait anxiety in herself when she was overthinking about her dream.

Abstract

This study is mainly aimed to reveal the detective formula in Agatha Christie’s Sleeping Murder Miss Marple in the Last Case. In conducting this research, qualitative research is applied since the data is in form of words rather than numbers. In analyzing the operative formula in Agatha Christie’s Sleeping Murder Miss Marple in the Last Case the writer used the structuralism theory. The result of the research shows that there is a detective formula, in the detective story the formula of a detective story is required to arrange the structure and explain how the situation, the pattern of action in this story. In order to solve the crime this happened in Sleeping Murder: Miss Marple in the Last Case. The detective formula centers upon the detective’s investigation and solution of the crime. Exemplify six main phases of this pattern (a) Introduction of the Detective; (b) Crime and Clue; (c) Investigation;  (d) Announcement and the Solution; (e) Explanation of the  Solution; (f) Denouement, all the phases revealed in the novel.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the family problem as seen in Nicholas Sparks’ novel The Last Song. The Last Song portrayed a relationship that turns bad because of divorce. The purpose of this research is to find out the family problem and the causes in the novel. This research uses a qualitative method because the data is collected in the form of words. The primary source of this research is the novel itself The Last Song written by Nicholas Sparks and the secondary sources are articles, books and journals that are related to this research. The result of this study showed how a family problem could ruin children’s life in any aspect. It is regarded that people have to maintain the family relationship well although people cannot avoid some problems which potentially ruin the family relationship. Broken families have a serious impact on the children who experience it. The cause of the family problem is because of lack of care for family, lack of communication, and cheating.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the problems that occur in the distance learning   system in learning English. This researh was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano. The method used in this research was qualitative method. Data collection in this study was questionnaire made in google form and distributed to 29 students. The results of this study conclude that online learning is carried out using media applications such as Whatsapp, Google meet, Google classroom and Zoom which are used when learning online at SMP Negeri 2 Tondano. There are obstacles for teachers in conducting online learning to students, including the lack of student understanding when carrying out the online learning process. This is because students do not understand the material given because they do not meet directly and the teacher is difficult to monitor student progress accurately. The main factor that is more important is the lack of facilities owned by students when studying online because not all students have facilities such as cellphones, laptops or computers as study equipment. Besides that, another factor is internet packages that are expensive and have a bad network in their environment.

Abstract

In Indonesian, English has been decided as a first foreign language by the    national education which can be learned started from elementary school up to        university  level, but there are some students who are not interested in learning English. One way to find out the reasons for students’ disinterest in English learning arises from the data is from their own perceptions. The purpose of this study was to describe students’ perceptions/opinions on English learning in SMP Katolik St. Theresia Tanawangko. Since it dealt with students’ perceptions/opinions, this study was categorized as a survey research. The sample of this study was ninth students at SMP Katolik St. Theresia Tanawangko in the academic year 2019-2020. Since students’ perceptions were the focus of this survey, the data were collected using a questionnaire. It focused on four indicators and the questionnaire itself consisted of 20 items with 5 items per indicator. Result of the data analysis leads the researcher to arrive at the following conclusions: (1) majority of the sampling students (87%) had positive attitudes toward English learning, (2) 90%  were strongly motivated to learn English or love learning English, and (3) 93% learn English because it is a compulsory subject. They learned the language for the following purposes: to have internet access (89%), get job in the future (95%), and widen their knowledge of the world (91%). After knowing students’ perceptions, it is important for English teacher to further increase motivation and foster a sense of courage in students at school, especially in English learning.

Abstract

This study was concerned the vocabulary teaching which aims at determining whether or not students’ English vocabulary can be improved by using pictures. The subjects of this study consisted of 21 students at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Siau Timur Selatan. The writer used the quantitative method in analyzing while the data was collected through pretest and posttest. The writer used the mean score formula in analyzing the data. The type of test that would be given to students was multiple choice with a total fo 20 questions. The students are taught using pictures and there was about things in the classroom. Results of this study indicated a  significant improvement in students' English vocabulary after using media in the form of pictures in teaching vocabulary. This can be proven by the average value of the pretest was 3.67 while the posttest was 7.81. It means that pictures is effectively considered to be used in improving students' English vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to describe whether using picture can improve students’ reading comprehension. This research involved the Eight-grade students of SMP N 1 Siau Timur Selatan were 22 students as the research subject. The design of this research is the pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test and the instrument used in collecting the data was a test. The data were analyzed by using the mean score. The finding shows that this research came out with finding that using picture is effective can improve students reading comprehension. The difference in student scores on T1 & T2 where the mean score of T1 was 64.54 and the mean score of T2 was 78.18. These results indicate that the use of picture in teaching reading comprehension is effective to improve students reading comprehension. This also shows that the use of picture in learning activities at SMP N 1 Siau Timur Selatan was effective to improve students reading comprehension. Therefore, it is suggested that teacher of English subject in SMP use picture in teaching reading comprehension to their students.

Abstract

The short story is effective way in improving students’ reading ability at grade VIII     SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of short story in improving students’ reading ability at Grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon.         The research design employed in this research was true experimental. The                 population of this research was the students’ at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon        and the sample was 20 students in the experimental group and 20 students in the control group. The result of data analysis showed that the experimental group got a mean score 84.25 than the control group got mean score 39.5. It means that, the mean score of the students in the experimental group was higher than for those in the control group. It showed that there is a significant improvement on students’ reading ability through short story and it indicated that short story is effective to improve students’ reading ability at grade VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon. Regarding to the research findings, it is recommended to English teachers to use short story to improve the students’ reading ability. For the future researchers, it is also recommended to use the results of this research as a reference in employing similar research on the same or different language skills in different setting.
