Abstract

This research aimed to analyse the readability level of the reading material in the textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris untuk Siswa SMA-MA/SMK-MAK Kelas XI by Otong Setiawan DJ. and Supeni. Researchers used quantitative methods to analyse the data. The data used in this study is the reading material in the textbook which is more than 100 words. There are fourteen reading texts which were analysed using two readability formulas, namely Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. The results of the calculations of these two formulas showed that, from fourteenth texts, eleventh (78.6%) reading texts are not in accordance to the eleventh grade students. Only three (21.5%) from fourteenth reading texts that are in accordance to students’ level.

Abstract

Song is one of the teaching tools that is utilized to aid in the development of the English language. The use of song in the classroom has numerous advantages for the learning process. Therefore, this study was conducted to see whether using songs in the classroom can provide benefits in the teaching and learning process. This research was conducted on 6th semester students majoring in English at UNIMA. In this study, the researcher used a survey method assisted by a questionnaire instrument which was distributed via google form as a platform for conducting interviews with objects. The subjects of this study were 18 students in 1 class. Based on what was found in the research, students agreed with the help provided by the song in the learning process. Students feel that their listening skill has improved because of listen to English song, because spending time with listen to English song make them more familiar with the English word, also make it easier to memorize a new vocabulary in the lyrics. They also feel enjoy in listen to English song because listen to a song make the atmosphere of learning become more relaxing. In general, the students responded positively to the assertions, with the majority agreed. The usage of English song can be useful in developing listening abilities, as evidenced by the preceding explanation.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the perceptions of students about the use of song for speaking skill. The researcher used questionnaire in this research. The researcher used descriptive method which is survey method to analyze the data. Survey method was used to analyze the data directly from people. The population of this research were the third grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Tomohon. There were 10 classes that divided into 5 science classes, 3 social classes, and 2 language & culture classes. There were 297 students of third grade at the school. The sample was 15% of the population and the researcher used simple random technique. In other words, there were 44 students participated in this research. Based on the findings of the research, it was found that the students as the sample had a great deal in experience by using song, and the perception from the questions were dominated positively. The conclusion was the use of song considered to be beneficial and effective for third grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Tomohon. It was suggested to English teachers to always improve the way of teaching, monitoring the improvement of technology that can be improved things especially in learning speaking and gain the benefits from the result.

Abstract

This study focused on the students’ perception on the use of podcast to the learning of English speaking. In doing this research, the researcher used questionnaire to be distributed to the students. The researcher used quantitative research as the research method and the collected data were presented in the form of numbers and counted in percentage formula. In distributing this research, the population was the third grade of TKJ students of SMK Cokroaminoto Kotamobagu, which has 5 classes. The researcher took the sample from 3 classes of those 5 classes based on the teacher’s recommendation. There were 3 classes participated in this research which one class consisted of 20 until 25 students. There were total 65 respondents answered the distributed questionnaire. The result of the research showed the domination of positive responses from the respondents of the questionnaire based on the students’ experience in using the podcast as learning media. So, could be concluded that English podcast was effective to use as a media in learning English, especially to practice the speaking skills. The teacher was suggested to always do an improvement in more creative way by using the existing technology and to know what the students need to be fun in various ways of learning especially in learning English also speaking skill practice as well and could be produced the best outcomes from the benefits obtained.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the students’ anxiety in speaking English. In this study, the researcher used a descriptive quantitative approach in order to answer the proposed questions. The sample that was taken from one class only with the total of students were 36 students. Therefore, it can be said that one of three indicators the represent the anxiety of students in speaking English, the most dominant is the second indicator, namely text anxiety where students feel the most anxious and worried when faced with formal situations such as exams, tests, midterm exams or practical exam. The test anxiety indicator is the indicator that covers the most questions in the distributed questionnaire, which includes 15 questions related to it, so it can be said that there is a need for a special method that can be a solution to students’ anxiety in speaking which is dominated by fear informal learning situations. Thus, for students who have been felt or experienced speaking anxiety, perhaps that students study hard to minimize their anxiety such as increasing reading books, listening to music, watch western movies without subtitles. Finally, always be brave, confident, don’t be afraid to try to speak with others and speaking skills. Furthermore, the students need to implement more in speaking and for the further researcher, perhaps this research can be used as a source of reference for their research.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the types of inflectional affixes in Ariana Grande’s song lyrics. The method employed in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were in the form of words from Ariana Grande’s song lyrics which consist of inflectional suffixes. The source of the data was five of Ariana Grande’s songs entitled ‘My Everything’, ‘One Last Time’, ‘Just a Little Bit of Your Heart’, ‘Point of View’, and ‘Almost is Never Enough’. The data were collected through listening to the songs, reading the lyrics, and taking notes of the words which consist of inflectional affixes. The results showed that there are seven types of inflectional affixes found in the song lyrics, which were noun plural, present participle, comparative, present third-person singular, past participle, past tense, and noun singular possessive. The type of inflectional affix which found the most is the present participle which occurs 18 times. Then, nine plurals with a total of 11 occurrences. After that, the following noun plural was past tense which was found in 6 different lyrics. Next was present third-person singular with 3 occurrences. Then, the fifth position was comparative which is found in 2 lyrics. Finally, the least used type of inflectional affixes was past participle and noun singular possessive which only appears one time each

Abstract

This research aims at the influence is being found in blended learning method towards students learning outcomes. This research utilized a quasi-experimental research with experimental group and control group. This research was conducted to the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tomohon in the academic 2020-2021. The subjects of this study are 40 students. For the experimental group there are 20 students and in the control group there are 20 students. The data were collected through test given to the both groups. Blended learning can be used to develop students’ learning outcomes in English speaking skill greeting material. It can be seen from the students’ score of experimental group is higher than control group. The mean score of the experimental group is 85, 15 and the mean score of the control group is 45, 35. It can be concluded that blended learning method have a significant impact on students’ learning outcomes in English speaking skill greeting material.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to increase students’ vocabulary by using songs techniques of SMP Negeri 1 Siau Timur Selatan. The method used in this study was the pre-experimental method. This research was carried out in one class, namely the seventh grade with a total of 21 students. The students are taught using the songs and they are That is a Window, Things in the classroom and My Classroom. The instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test. Mean score formula was used in analyzing data. The result showed that the pre-test score is 4,47 while the post-test score is 7,57. That means, Song is the right technique to use in increasing students’ vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether the final exam that is given by the teacher to students can encourage students to think critically. This research was conducted in Tondano. The method used in this research was the quantitative method. The researcher took the data from about English language exam consisting of 40 questions. In 40 questions there are 5 kinds of test that is examined. Research using the theory of Bloom's Taxonomy. After being analyzed based on the theory of bloom’s taxonomy, all the contents of the questions contain 100% knowledge. In 40 questions there is no comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, or even evaluation. The test results showed that the 40 questions are at the level of low order thinking because it's a matter of the English exam is otherwise not able to encourage the students in critical thinking according to the theory of Bloom's Taxonomy on high order thinking level.

Abstract

Native-speakerism issues are found in English teaching and learning around the world. This study aims to clarify how students perceive something like the characteristics of an ideal English teacher, and how students perceive learning English. This study was conducted at the Faculty of English Education, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Universitas Negeri Manado. A 17-item questionnaire taken from a previous related study was used and distributed to 32 students. The results of this study showed that most students do not recognize “native speakers” as a source of credibility and that the role model for imitating accents should be “native speakers”. Both “native speakers” and “non-native speakers” are recognized as equally good in grammar lessons.
