Abstract

As one aspect of sociolinguistics, social communication is used to indicate relationships in society and refers to names that may come from status. Indonesia has many regional languages, one of which is Gorontalo. In Gorontalo, there are many regional languages. This study aims to analyze the meaning of the greeting terms used by the Gorontalo language speakers. The qualitative descriptive method was used in this study through interviews. Informants were taken based on the criteria of native speakers, adults, able to speak and understand the language, good speaking skills, and socially acceptable groups. The data collection uses a list of words and sentences about the term nicknames in Indonesian as an instrument. The steps to analyze the data are unitization, categorization, explanation, and interpretation. The study results found several greeting terms in the Gorontalo language, namely community, and religious leaders, grandparents' relationships with parents, grandchildren, neighbors, and friends. The greeting terms here are used in the formal and informal language during a conversation, and each language that exists in different or different communication has its characteristics in using the greeting term.

Abstract

The main problem for Indonesian English learners is the lack of vocabulary. During the teaching and learning process, most students often need more time to complete the tasks given by the teacher. Students have to translate the text word by word because their vocabulary is limited. It takes a long time, so achieving learning objectives is less effective. In practice, language is complex for students to understand. This study aims to analyze whether the Bright – English for Beginners application can enrich students' vocabulary or not. It is quantitative research with a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. This research was conducted on class VII students consisting of 22 students. The methods used to collect data are observation, interviews, and tests. The instruments used to analyze the data are questionnaires and question sheets in analyzing the data obtained using descriptive statistics. The study results were that there was a statistically significant difference between the pre-test (before treatment) and post-test (after treatment). The mean pre-test score was 34.62, while the mean post-test was 88.25. Post-test achievement is higher than pre-test achievement. The findings of this study reveal that the use of the Bright – English for Beginners application significantly enriches students' vocabulary. As a result, it can be concluded that the Bright – English for Beginners application effectively improves students' vocabulary.

Abstract

Pemanfaatan potensi alam untuk menjadi daya tarik suatu objek wisata membawa dampak positif bagi kesejahteraan masyarakat. Hal ini ditandai dengan bertambahnya lapangan pekerjaan dan ekonomi masyarakat yang meningkat. Dengan demikian diperlukan SDM yang mampu berbahasa Inggris dengan baik dan benar, terutama untuk berkomunikasi dengan turis mancanegara. Pengabdian IbM ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengatasi permasalahan kurangnya kemampuan karyawan dalam berbahasa Inggris dengan mengadakan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris bagi karyawan objek wisata Bukit Tintingon. Pelatihan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengalaman berbahasa Inggris, karena itu digunakan metode drill and repetition, roleplay,dan diskusi serta ceramah. Metode-metode ini merupakan metode yang efektif dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Pada pelatihan ini kelompok Mitra telah dilatih menggunakan bahasa Inggris, para karyawan mendapat kesempatan untuk mempraktekkan apa yang telah dipelajari melalui metode drill and repetition. Diakhir pelatihan dilakukan monitoring pendampingan aplikasi penggunaan bahasa Inggris oleh para karyawan peserta pelatihan ketika menghadapi wisatawan asing

Abstract

This study aims to reveal students’ perception toward the use of google translate in translating at English Education Department, Universitas Negeri Manado. This research was a quantitative research and descriptive method is applied. A questionnaire that consists of 17 items was used as an instrument to collect the data. The questionnaire employed Likert scale. The sample was 30 eighth semester students of English Education Department Universitas Negeri Manado. The collected data were quantitative and analysed with percentage formula. Based on the findings, almost all statements received positive responses from the respondents. There were 2 statements that had higher responses which number 1 and 6. There were 93.3% of respondents agreed that they were interested in translating activity and used google translate as a media in translating, furthermore 80% of respondents agreed that they can translate easier using google translate. It means that the 8th semester students of English Education Department in Universitas Negeri Manado like the activity of translating and they do the translation easier using Google Translate. In addition, the average of the positive response in the other questionnaire items were above 50%. on the other hand, 40.3% of the respondents disagreed about the statement “google translate can translate paragraph by paragraph effectively”, 60% of respondents agreed that google translate made them lazy to open dictionary. Thus it can be concluded that google translate was helpful in translating especially translating English to Indonesian, furthermore the students are suggested to re-check the result of google translate and to not rely totally on it.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the readability level of the revised version of the English textbook titled “When English Rings a Bell in Junior High School”, the aim of doing this research is to make sure the reading texts are appropriate for the student’s level of reading. In this study, students have a problem to comprehend the text well. This study use quantitative approach as the research design in this study. The data was collected using Flesch’s Reading Ease Formula. The results of the research shows that 2 texts selected from 15 texts are appropriate for the Seventh Grade of Junior High School at a “Fairly Easy” Level. There are 6 texts suitable for the fifth grade students, 4 texts suitable for sixth grade students, 3 texts suitable for eight grade students and only two reading texts appropriate for the seventh grade of Junior High School.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the types and the meaning of figurative language in the song lyrics of Selena Gomez in her album, Rare. The basis of this research is the theory proposed by Kennedy who divided figurative language in three parts, namely comparative, contradictive and correlative figurative language. In analyzing the data, the researcher used steps by Miles and Huberman: data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing and verification. The result of this research showed that there are 31 expressions of figurative language in six song lyrics of Selena’s “Rare” album. There are 22 expressions of metaphor, 6 expressions of hyperbole and 3 expressions of symbol. Metaphor is the most dominant figurative language in Selena’s song lyric; for example, in the lyric of Lose You to Love Me, we can found some expressions of metaphor, such as: set fire to my purpose and every single words builds up to this moment. From the explanation above, the researcher can suggest for future researcher to analyze and discuss other types of figurative language in Selena’s other album.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the students speaking skill by the use of the Oral Presentation Technique. This study is carried out on second-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Kotamobagu during the academic year 2020/2021. A quantitative approach is used in this pre-experimental study. There are 22 students in one class for the subject. The experiment is divided into three stages: pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument of the study is the oral test. The data are obtained by pre-test and post-test. Before giving the treatment, the researchers administer the pre-test to find out students’ speaking skill at the beginning. The post-test is conducted at the end after giving the treatment. In analyzing the obtained data, researchers use the mean score formula. The result shows that the average post-test score (4.09) is the highest of the pre-test score (2.59). This result may lead to a conclusion that the Oral Presentation Technique is effective for students' speaking skills in the second grade at SMA Negeri 1 Kotamobagu.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the moral values found in Lady Gaga’s selected songs. This research is a qualitative research since the data gathered are in the form of words rather than numbers. In analyze the data; the writer used objective approach because the data were taken only from the work itself, the study only focused on moral values found only in Lady Gaga’s selected song lyrics. The result show that There are four songs that full contain moral values. Born This Way morally tells about originality that needs to be sustained by human. Til It Hapens To You is a song to express the pain of women who become the victims of violation and sexual assault, Grigio Girls is composed to describe the mental strenth of female friends who got cancer and how they keep sustaining their life and Angel Down is about abuse of teenager, comes from the experience when a teenager was shot by neighbour, implying there is no care and protection to teens in their period of growth to future maturity, Til It Hapens To You is mainly about social moral that women needs to appreciated and respected, Grigio Girls delivers individual moral that tells that each individual needs to be strong and brave to face even hardest phase in life in this case cancer as acute disease, and Angel Down conveys social moral value with its concern to teenangers that needs to be given special attention in family and society.
