Abstract

Measuring the CO2 emission to the atmosphere has become significantly important due to the monitoring demand of pollutant emission based on the directives of the Kyoto Protocol. The carbon quota system has created strict regulations for measuring the CO2 emission in certain industries, internalizing the negative external effect of pollution created by human activity. As the built infrastructure is responsible for 40% of CO2 emission, this study focuses on the evaluation of the carbon footprint of the Study and Information Centre, which is one of the largest and most frequently visited main buildings of the University of Szeged [1]. The data collection used for the evaluation was conducted in the first quarter of 2020 and contains information for all three scopes (fuel combustion, company vehicles, fugitive emission – purchased electricity, heat and steam – purchased goods and services, business travel, waste disposal, transportation, investments). In the process of data collection, the eating habits, selective waste collection and travelling methods were covered in a visitor/employee survey as well. The results highlighted in this paper will provide a basis for further carbon reduction investments, protocols and events held for shaping the visitors’ and employees’ consciousness after the COVID 19 pandemic. Keyword: Environmental impact, carbon footprint, Bilan Carbone, higher education, travel, meals

Abstract

sustainable operations agenda. Guided by this agenda, we formed partnerships to operationalize a greener transportation system. One of our initiatives is to partner with an electromechanical solutions provider in operationalizing our zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) policy with the use of electronic vehicles in our shuttle services before the pandemic. To reduce the number of private vehicles on campus, we also partnered with a bus company to provide a point-to-point service for our community members.  During the pandemic, we continued to develop facilities and programs to encourage the use of bicycles by our community post-pandemic. Abstract

The Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), in order to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and guarantee the constitutional rights to health and higher education of its university students, adopted innovative initiatives during the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing the maintenance of academic and administrative activities. With the emergency remote teaching for students and home office for servers, emergency aid for digital inclusion was made available, such as costing internet packages, mobile data chip distribution, electronic equipment loan, financing of personal protective equipment and installation of internet via radio in villages for indigenous students. Professors were offered training courses on information and communication technology tools and innovative methodologies for remote teaching. Furthermore, UFMS offered free molecular testing and diagnosis of Sars-Cov-2 to members of the academic community of Cidade Universitária who presented symptoms of Covid-19. All these actions carried out by UFMS, besides highlighting it on the national scene, made it possible to complete the 2020 academic calendar within the same year, an achievement that took place only in two other Brazilian federal universities.Keyword: Innovation in the pandemic. Abstract

The University of Sharjah is a leading educational and research institution in the Gulf region. To stimulate the different aspects of sustainability in education and research as well as to ensure the implementation of sustainability concepts throughout the University campus operations, the concept of sustainability circles is implemented. The University being in hot-arid-zone and mostly surrounded by desert terrain relies on unconventional water conservation programs and initiatives such as the use of innovation & technology, reuse and recycling of water, and awareness campaigns. In line with such programs, the use of potable water is limited for hygiene purposes and wastewater generated within the University is reused after treatment to irrigate the vast green spaces through the most efficient irrigation water application systems. Examples of water conservation practices include use of efficient water devices, reuse of treated greywater for toilet flushing at a selected location, water quality monitoring, preservation to conserve water for its intended use, promoting waterless car wash on the campus grounds etc. On-campus water is also conserved through disseminating knowledge and awareness to the University community and beyond through various sustainability related programs and initiatives organized by Sustainability Office for water conservation and environmental protection.

Abstract

The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) is Canada's premier polytechnic. In 2008, BCIT partnered with its local electricity utility to hire a full-time energy manager. The following year, BCIT's School of Construction and the Environment initiated a campus-as-living-lab of sustainability project called Factor Four in the seven buildings it occupies on BCIT's main campus in Burnaby. The purpose was to explore whether a four-fold (75%) reduction in materials and energy use could be achieved without compromising service levels. By 2016, the project achieved a 50% reduction in energy use and associated greenhouse gas emissions. Factor Four attracted over four million dollars in funding, engaged over 250 students from 12 educational programs, and produced over $200,000 savings annually. In 2017, BCIT set an ambitious target to reduce its annual greenhouse gas emissions 33% below 2007 levels by 2023, and 80% by 2050, across all five of its campuses. BCIT’s ultimate goal is to become both greenhouse gas neutral and a net energy producer. By setting ambitious targets and systematically implementing energy efficiency improvements, utilizing waste-heat exchange, fuel switching, and developing on-site renewable energy, BCIT is on track to achieving its energy management and climate change goals.

Abstract

Sustainability has been one of the core principles at Ozyegin University (OzU) since its establishment in 2008 and is deeply embedded in its education, research and governance strategy. For OzU, being a green university means building an organic community constantly improving itself on every aspect of sustainability in collaboration with all its stakeholders. OzU accomplished these by establishing the first Health & Safety and Environment (HSE) Department within a university in Turkey. Besides, OzU is also the first university in Turkey to have been concurrently awarded both ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and OHSAS 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System Certifications. With these accomplishments OzU has pioneered the path for sustainable universities in Turkey resulting in various rewards and highest places in multitude rankings including GreenMetric. Abstract

The implementation of the Environmental Management Advisory at Maranhão State University, in 2015, promoted environmental education actions as a continuous in the institution, and coordinated by the Environmental Management System of the advisory. The approval on the call for the creation of Green Rooms, by the Ministry of Environment, became this university qualified in 2018 to have a Green Room in its space, constituting a space for environmental interactions. Thus, the objective was to discuss the actions developed in 2018. Having a Circuit format, the Green Room of this academy (Green Room Circuit at Paulo VI Campus), in the year in question, four visits were made, with activities scheduled in the Fishery and Aquatic Ecology laboratories, Zoology laboratory, Botanical Collection (Rosa Mochel), Agroecological Trail and seedling workshops. Totalizing 109 participants, 33% were from the capital and 67% from the metropolitan region of Sao Luis and other municipalities of Maranhão state, northeast of Brazil. Therefore, the Green Room Circuit of Paulo VI Campus was faced as a potentializer and dynamizer, for the development of actions that contribute to a sustainable awareness among its participants.

Abstract

“Leading University Creating Innovation for Sustainable Future”, the vision of Siam University, reflects our commitment to ensure that all learners acquire necessary mindset, skills, values, and knowledge to become co-creators of a more sustainable futures. The vision has been implemented in a whole institution approach. Faculty members, staff, and students are encouraged to integrate sustainable development and SDGs in their academic, research, and engagement activities. The latest survey showed that 2,023 out of 2,152 courses (94%) provided in the academic year of 2020 had integrated SDGs in their content and class activities. In addition, our general education program has been redesigned to serve as “Living Learning Lab (LLL)” for sustainable development projects. This revised program offers many sustainability and sustainability-related courses. They are designed to be interdisciplinary in nature. Teaching-learning activities with emphasis on “living lab” as well as experiential and project-based learning are introduced through team teaching. LLL encourages faculty members and students to work as partners for sustainable development in the surrounding communities which serve as our social living labs. During Covid-19 pandemic, we have to redesign this LLL and rethink from the learnt lessons. Nevertheless, it is our belief that these practices in the “living learning lab” will foster needed sustainability competencies leading to sustainable futures.Keyword: living learning lab, learning ecosystem, sustainable development, sustainability competencies, general education

Abstract

The purpose of this project is to assist local fruit farmers to increase output value through innovative development, build a distribution network for agricultural products, and increase farmers' income. In the technology of increasing agricultural output value, NCUT's professional team applies smart agricultural technology to monitor fruit trees to prevent pests and diseases, maintain the healthy growth and yield of fruit trees, and solve the problem of lack of labor in farmland. The NCUT team practices strategic marketing and business models to guide fruit farmers to promote local creation and enhance local cultural characteristics. This project assists in the implementation of new quality-guaranteed and value-added technologies, promotes high-quality agricultural products across the country and improves local tourism marketing, and activates agricultural product promotion activities to achieve mutual support between industry and academia. In addition, in response to the 50th anniversary of the World Earth Day, NCUT held a tree planting to save the earth to implement the concept of sustainable environmental development. Abstract

This paper aims to explain and describe the implementation of the concept of sustainable water management applied at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, as part of the implementation of the green campus idea. UIN Raden Fatah's participation in the UI GreenMetric program has been started since 2019 and will be active in 2020. Water management is an important thing at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang because of the condition of the campus itself which is in a water reservoir and swamp area. The campus is divided into two locations, namely Campus A in the Jalan Jenderal Sudirman area and Campus B in the Jakabaring area, Palembang. Campus B is a new campus that will only start operating in 2021, therefore, water management arrangements are very important. The management of water resources is carried out with the Wash program which consists of revitalizing clean water infrastructure, metering clean water supply, water reuse program, improving surface water quality, as well as construction of drainage and canalization. In practice, higher education leaders issue policies that involve all the academic community, ranging from education staff, educators, to students. Keyword: water, green campus, sustainable, swamp
