Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study was to know whether or not there is significance correlation between EFL Learners’ self-confidence and their speaking achievement of the fourth semester students of Engish department at Unisma. The research design in this study is quantitative in the form of correlation design. The subject in this study consists of 30 students. In collecting the data needed to know EFL learners’ self-confidence used questionnaire, adopted from Purba (2014) and collected students speaking achievement by assessing students’ performance in the class. The result showed that r-counted of EFL learners’ self-confidence was .228 with P value .226, level of significant of P value was higher than .05 or .226 > .05. It means that there was no significant correlation between EFL learners’ self-confidence and their speaking achievement. According to the result, it can be said that the null hypothesis is accepted while the alternative hypothesis is rejected.Keywords: correlation, self-confidence, speaking achievement

Abstract

English speaking is an activity to produce some words to convince the opponents about our statement or thought. As an English skill, speaking cannot be separated from the problems which faced by the students. The problems such as fear of mistakes, shyness, lack of confidence, lack of motivation and anxiety. Among those problems, anxiety is the most crucial problem in speaking.Anxiety itself divided into three categories which are Trait Anxiety, State Anxiety and Specific-Situational Anxiety. The objective of this research was to find out whether there is any correlation between speaking anxiety and students’ speaking skill. This research was classified as a correlation research. The subject was 29 fourth semester students of English Department of Univerity of Islam Malang. The were two instruments for this research those are FLCAS questionnaire adopted from Howritz (1986) and Speaking test which used speaking scoring rubric. The result of this study showed that speaking anxiety and students’ speaking skill are perfectly negative correlated each others. The significant value is 0.00 which is less than 0.05 level. Then, The r value is -683 which means those two variables have a high negative correlation because the r value significant at point 0.60.

Abstract

English is an international language that most widely used language by people in the world in both oral and written communication. For English language learners, speaking is the most crucial skill among the other skills. Students who have strong oral communication, they can participate easily in the second language environment. To have credibility in speaking, students have to study the components of target language, in this case English language. Among the components of speaking, grammar is the most important component in speaking. It means by having good grammar students can speak in clear and effective manner since grammar is the rule of language and how the sentences constructed.This research was a correlational study, conducted in June 2019 at the English education department of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of University of Islam Malang. The sample of this research was one class which consisting 31 students. The researcher took class C because the researcher got an advise from the lecturer to choose this class. There were two instruments used in collecting data, they are TOEFL test and interview questions The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Formula in IBM SPSS version 20.The finding of this research indicated that there is no significant correlation between the students’ grammar mastery and their grammatical accuracy in speaking . It can be concluded that students who master the grammar well do not guarantee they can speak English accurately. Based on the finding of this research, it is addressed to the English lecturers to concern more in other techniques and ways of teaching grammatical accuracy in speaking English in easy way, so that the students are able to perform speaking better and accurate. It is also suggested to the further researcher to investigate large scale of subject, variable and use different instrument in order to make the result more accurate. Key Words: Grammar Mastery, Speaking Accuracy

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of using 360° videos learning medium on speaking ability at junior high school students. In this study, the researcher used 360° videos in teaching speaking English at junior high school students. The research design of this study was quantitative pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design. The subjects of this study were 30 students from seventh grade of junior high school. There were two tests in this study, those tests were pre-test and post-test. In these tests, the subject of the study asked to describe people in the pre-test and describe place in the post-test. Before administered post-test, the subjects of this study were treated by 360° videos for three meeting. After treatment, the post-test was administered and analyzed the data (pre-test and post-test) using SPSS 22. In the analyzed the data, the researcher found the significant score was 0.000. It means that by using 360° videos learning medium in teaching speaking, the students achieve better score in speaking English than before students treated using 360° videos leaning medium.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the different interaction effect between high and low student memory reading strategy on their reading achievement. The respondents of this study were fourth semester students of English department UNISMA. The total of this sample is 42 students. In collecting the data, the researcher needed to know the level of students’ memory reading skill and their reading achievement. So the researcher decided to use questioner and collect the reading midterm test score from their reading lecture. The researcher used quantitative independent t-test research design with variables students’ memory reading strategies and their reading achievement. The questioner was adapted from Oxford (1990) which is this questioner also used by many previous researchers that already test the validity and reliability of this questioner. The result of this study showed the different mean score between high and low level of memory reading strategy. 66.14 for high level of memory reading strategy and 71.05 for low level of memory reading strategy. The result analyze of the mean difference between high and low student memory reading strategy of this study = -4.914 > 0.05. The mean different -4.914 it got from 66.14-71.05 so the result was -4.914. Then, the sig (2- tailed) = 0.241> 0.05 so from the result, the researcher can conclude that there is no significantly different effect between high and low students  memory reading strategy on their achievement at English department of UNISMA.

Abstract

This article aims at knowing which one the higher of students’ score in reading comprehension taught by SQ3R method and conventional method. This research used quasi-experimental research design. The subject of this study is VIII C as experimental group and VIII B as control group. The tests were given to the students in the form of pre-test and post-test. The test was in multiple choice items. The instruments were developed on the basis of materials and topic given in the 2nd semester of eight grade students. The finding of this research is there are significant difference students’ score, it can be concluded that post-test score of experimental group were higher than control group. So, by using SQ3R method could assits the students acquired better score in reading comprehension and SQ3R gave good contributions to make students felt much better to comprehend the text.

Abstract

AbstrakThe aim of this research is to describe the speaking difficulties faced by good speaking achievers, and to explain learning strategies used by good speaking achiever of English department of University of Islam Malang overcome their difficulties. Here, good speaking achievers are the forth semester students who can speak English very well in which they get A score in every semester and participated in competition related to English. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher took two selected participants from the fourth grade of University of Islam Malang. The researcher used three instruments; interview guide, document and documentation. The finding of the study explained that mostly good speaking students had difficulties in learning speaking. The problems faced by the learners were lack of vocabulary, difficult in pronunciation, nervousness and less confident. The participants also had some strategies to overcome their problems. To encourage new vocabularies, the strategies that good speaking students used were watching the movie and listening to music. Then, practicing speaking often was strategy that the learner applied to overcome heir difficulties in pronunciation. Moreover, the strategy that participant used in solving their nervousness and their less confidence was talking to the lecturer and their close friends. Key Words: Speaking skill, speaking difficulties, learning strategies.
