Abstract

The objectives of the research are: 1). to make aware of the type of the students errors, 2). to develop positive strategies of error correction, 3). to find out the effective techniques in conducting errors correction, and 4). to know the students’ English progress after being corrected during the learning activity of the English Conversation II class in semester 4. The result of the research showed that most mistakes made by students consist of over generalization and interference errors. In correcting the errors, students prefer to have discussion, drilling, and echoing techniques. When the writer corrected errors, students gave good responses in terms of their willingness, and happiness.. The techniques of correcting errors applied by the writer have improved the students’ performance when they communicate in English. It was proved by the number of mistakes made by the students is 102. These mistakes were produced during their oral presentation in the last session of the class. The decreasing mistakes made by the students are from 192 to 102 mistakes. Due to the research findings, it is suggested to the teachers of English to do the error correction persistently otherwise, the mistakes became fossilized. Apply the right and effective techniques based on the students’ condition and personality. Make students participate actively in the learning activity by creating positive atmosphere so that students will feel free to express their thoughts in oral communication.

The sampling technique is using purposive sampling technique. Vocabulary mastery data were collected using multiple choice tests while reading comprehension data were collected using multiple choice and essay tests. The results of this study were then analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation coefficient with the SPSS 22.0 application. The results of statistical calculations between variables X and Y are positive with an rxy of 0.206. Then rxy is compared with r table product moment at a significant level of 5% with a sample of 36 students, it is found that rxy > rtable is 0.546 > 0.329 in a low level of relationship. Therefore, hypothesis one (H1) is accepted while Hypothesis Null (????0) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 13 Makassar. Abstract

Language works as a gateway to express one's entire feelings or emotions. By using the dynamic force of the language, everyone reflects the culture of the community to which they belong. That means there lies a close connection between language and the culture of a community. Generally, each language represents a definite culture and a community. Likewise, the language of Bangladesh represents the cultural standard of the communities that belong to it. Thus, to show the immense influence of language on culture and the community, the researchers have selected a specific region of Bangladesh from the perspective of cultural and linguistic diversity. In this study, the researchers have used a descriptive research design and mixed methods following both quantitative and qualitative approaches to inquire appropriately. They have also used questionnaires to explore the dynamic force of language in both the culture and the community. The result of the present inquiry opines that language plays as a driving force in the culture of people of different ethnicities. In addition, this study also illuminates that the modification of language plays a significant role in modifying the style of living of a group of people, and gradually they lose their uniqueness and get accustomed to practicing different cultures subconsciously. It can be concluded that this research is to reveal the implicit propriety of language, which has the power to reshape the culture and the fundamental fabrics of the community

Abstract

Sight translation is a combination of the elements of translation and interpretation in which interpreters read source language text silently and render information to target language out loud. It has been considered as supportive teaching methods for interpreting training. Sight translation takes place during medical consultation, in the court, conference, and meetings. Simultaneous Interpreting is one of the compulsory courses at D4 English for Tourism Industry Politeknik Negeri Malang. Sight translation is discussed and practiced in the class as an attempt to prepare students for simultaneous interpreting. Instructional texts from various fields are used as learning materials in the class. Objective of this study is to identify problems students encountered while performing sight translation and explain some strategies they applied. 38 audio recordings, where students were asked to conduct sight translation of tourism-related text from English to Indonesia, were analyzed in this descriptive-qualitative study. The recordings were transcribed and analyzed to gain information on students’ constraints and strategies in sight translation. As an addition, questionnaires were distributed to probe data related students’ problems in sight translation. The findings showed that lack of vocabulary which led to inaccurate translation and inaccurate word choice became the major hindrance in performing sight translation. Furthermore, transcribing, deletion, borrowing, addition and use of hypernym are the strategies the majority of the students utilized as an attempt to complete their sight translation. Transcribing or word-per-word translation prevented students from conveying accurate messages into the target language.
