Abstract

This research discusses the relationship of language communication with society and culture. Bahasa Indonesia as a language of unity is used in activities to communicate by the wearer community from various tribes and regions. As an effective means of communication the Bahasa Indonesia has an important role in developing and launching various aspects of life and culture. This research uses the method of literature writing (library research). To know the language activities of a person does not merely use the language as communication, but rather describes other aspects outside the linguistic aspect. These aspects may affect the style, dialect, variety, form language it uses and show the user a separate language item that is closely related to the language (social class, ethnic group, nationality and geographical location of the linguist). Linguistically different but still not mentioned as a different language. Such language differences are called language variations.

Abstract

This study concerns with the descriptive analysis of Figurative Meaning In “Lang Leav” Poetry. The problem of the study is (1) What are the types of figurative meaning used in Lang Leav poetry? (2) What is the dominant type of figurative meaning used in Lang Leav poetry? (3) Why was the type most dominantly used? The objective of the study is to find out the types of figurative meaning that is used in Lang Leav Poetry and to know the dominant types of figurative meaning that is used in Lang Leav Poetry and the reason why was the type most dominantly used. This study used a Keraf’s (2009) theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method to classify and analyze the poetry. The data sources are found to originate from Lang Leav poetry. The total number of the types of figurative meaning in Lang Leav poetry: personification is 2 (6%), hyperbole is 14 (45%), metaphor is 3 (10%), symbol is 3 (10%), simile is 4 (13%) and irony is 5 (16%). Hyperbole is the most dominant types because it indicated activities that happen in Lang Leav poetry. Hyperbole as the dominant types of figurative meaning in poetry because there are so many expressions are over expressed.

Abstract

Pada dasarnya masyarakat Angkola sangat menjunjung tinggi adat pada setiap kali ingin melaksanakan hajatan atau acara adat, di mana apabila ada salah satu dari warga yang ingin melaksanakan horja atau pesta dalam hal ini adalah Suhut, maka seluruh anggota keluarga akan bermusyawarah kepada para pataya-pataya adat atau ketua adat untuk menyampaikan keinginan atau keluhan untuk meminta bantuan kepada ketua adat tersebut agar kiranya disampaikan kepada para warga sekampung. Dalam hal ini, martahi karejo merupakan acara adat yang dilakukan sebelum prosesi upacara perkawinan pada masyarakat Angkola yang dimulai dari musyawarah seperti yang sudah dianalisis di atasyakni berbicara dalam bertutur sapa yang sangat khusus dan unik, antara barisan yang terdapat dalamdalian na tolu yaitu Kahanggi, Anak Boru dan Mora. Konteks situasi yang terlihat pada teks hobar pada tradisi martahi karejo yaitu medan wacana yang terdiri dari Hata ni Suhut, Hata ni Kahanggi, Hata ni Hombar Suhut, Hata ni Anak Boru, Hata ni Pisang raut, Hata ni mora, Hata mangalusi ni Hatobangon, Hata pangalusi ni Harajaon, Hata pangalusi ni orang kaya, Hata pangalusi ni Raja, dan Hatani Pasahat Burangir Taon-Taon. Sementara itu, yang dikategorikan sebagai pelibat wacana dari teks hobar pada tradisi martahi karejo adalah Suhut Si Habolonan, Kahanggi, Anak Boru, Pisang Raut, Na Mora , Hatobangon, Hatarajaon, OrangKaya, dan Raja Pasunan Bulung. Sedangkan yang dikategorikan sebagai sarana wacana dari teks hobar pada tradisi martahi karejo adalah pesan disampaikan secara lisan yaitu dengan cara monolog, berpidato dan berpantun. Makna perangkat adat yang mempunyai arti luas dan mempunyai filsafat bagi masyarakat Angkola khususnya, yakni (1) burangir (sirih), (2) gambir, (3) soda, (4) pining (pinang), (5) timbako (tembakau), (6) pinggan (piring), (7) abit (kain), dan (8) hadangan. Perangkat adat satu sampai lima dikatakan juga pada istilah masyarakat Angkola, yakni empat ganjil lima gonop yang artinya emapat masih terasa ganjil atau janggal maka harus dibuat 5 agar menjadi genap ataupun lengkap.

Abstract

This research was on the study of English literature. The objectives were firstly to investigate students’ ability of English Department, Teaching Training and Education at Prima Indonesia University, then to find out elements of poetry. This research applied descriptive qualitative approach with group discussion method and a case study design where one class at fourth semester was taken as the subjects. The instrument used in this research was an essay test taken from one of Robert Frost’s poems. Through group discussion, the students worked cooperatively to analyze the poems by sharing their arguments and ideas as the requirements to accomplish the study of poetry. The data source was the scores that led to find the criteria of the students’ ability. Based on the findings, the elements of poetry identified were stanza, lines, rhyme, rhyme scheme, rhythm, syllables, meter, foot, mood, tone, imagery, and figure of speech. Then, there were 80% students able to identify the elements of poetry. While 20% remaining were the unable students. In conclusion, there were three of four groups assigned, classified able to identify the elements of poetry. It is suggested that group discussion is one of significant cooperative learning strategy in any instructional process.

Abstract

This study is aimed to reveal and define the new words that have been created in this new modern era by using social networking. The Neologism itself has their own stability, even though the words are not put in dictionary. Moreover, this study explained how the morphological process in words could create newly coinage words nowadays. The writer proposed Newmark theory as the grand theory to researched the newly coinage words and as the main foundation in making this study. For this study, the writer used social networking as the main object. The data were obtained from any social chatting relay such as Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, Instagram and IRC. Some data were taken from the journals that has specific contents about Neologism as well. The writer has described the words related to Neologism in changing by formation. The results are; the writer found 130 newly coinage total words for nine types of Neologism which are Blending (31 words, 23,84%), Abbreviations (7 words, 5,38%), Coinage (6 words, 4,61%), Acronym (41 words, 31,53%), Clipping (11 words, 8,46%), Affixation (26 words, 20%), Eponym (2 words, 1,53%), Conversion (5 words, 3,84%), Collocation (1 word, 0,76%). As the final result and objective, the writer has concluded that Acronym is the most dominant type of Neologism that found in social networking.

Abstract

Language is a tool of communication that all human use, such as oral/spoken, gesture and written. As a tool for communicating, language has an important role to convey information, intentions, ideas, or opinions in daily life. People in Indonesia do not only use Bahasa Indonesia but they also use the local language or the ethnic language and how those languages are used in daily life and how those languages are placed in certain situations. This study will focus on a variety Simalungun language use in everyday family conversation. This study is a requirement of all to learn and to use language and to enrich the knowledge of the language. When people meet or talk with native speakers of Parapat, not only can they enjoy the meeting and talks but also they can understand Simalungun language. the writer uses qualitative research methods, by collecting and analyzing data related to the topics analyzed. The writer, when collecting data, used interviews, reviewed literature, quoted several related books, the online resources and some related resources. Descriptive analytic method was applied for the selected data and analysis. Based on the analysis why the language use occurs in Simalungun family, that‟s because there is different order of birth with the others in family members, gender between the speaker and the opponent talk, and close relationship with people outside the family member.

Abstract

The comparison of the approach totally different individuals with different language backgrounds adopt the Indonesian in their e-mails will yield useful findings and may illuminate the extent to that the e-mail messages or influenced by the interlingual and intercultural transfer. This analysis aims to explain the interrelatedness among genre analysis of Indonesian business e-mails written by Minangkabau and Javanese Speakers. The method used descriptive qualitative. The information was obtained from ten business e-mails written by Minangkabau (five business e-mails) and Javanese Speaker (five business e-mails) and analyzed those supported 2 major stages, namely: macro-level and micro-level analysis consistent with Santos (2002). The results obtained from this analysis were Minangkabau speaker had additional complete structure than Javanese speaker. Because, in business e-mails written by Minangkabau had additional complete in move than Javanese speakers. And in lexico-grammatical options, the Javanese prefer to use proper noun, and therefore the Minangkabau prefer to use function word “you”.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out the types of code mixing and the reason why the sellers and buyers use code mixing in speaking. It was conducted by using qualitative methodology. The population of this research was the sellers of Simalingkar traditional market with consisted of three sellers. The instrument for collecting the data was recording. The data analysis could be concluded that the types of code mixing in this research were insertion of word, insertion of phrase and insertion of sentence. Meanwhile, the frequency of the data in this research were the insertion of word was 19,56%, the insertion of phrase was 34,78% and the insertion of sentence was 45,65%.

Abstract

The research deals with an analysis of translation method in the translated novel by Terence Blacker titled Ms Wiz Loves Dracula translated into Ms Wiz Jatuh Cinta pada Dracula by Novia Stephani. The objectives of the research were (1) to find out the types of translation method in the novel, (2) to find out the most dominant translation methods the novel. The researcher was conducted by using descriptive quantitative research. The data were words, phrases and sentences on Ms Wiz Loves Dracula as source of the data. The data were analyzed by using translation method focused on SL emphasize based on Newmark (1988) and process of translation method also based on Newmark (1988:19). The result of this research were (1) the types of translation method were 32 word for word (55%) and 26 literal translation (45%), (2) the dominant types of translation method was word for word (55%).
