Abstract

This research is aimed to dismantle and to reveal the religious moderation values from a local legacy of a Muslim cleric/kyai’s reflective thought written in a Javanese-Arabic poem (syiir) “Tanpo Waton” authored by KH. Muhammad Nizam As-Shofa, a local kyai and a spiritual master of the Naqsyabandiyyah Kholidiyyah sufi order. What remains interesting in this syiir is that it has been inaugurated by the national figure of pluralism as well as the fourth president of Indonesia, KH. Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) through his popular melodious chanting. This is a qualitative-descriptive research. Data collection in this study uses documentation, with a content and discourse analysis technique through the lens of religious moderation concept as the currently Indonesian grand narrative campaign for religious harmony. The analysis then entails the production of data in which there are textual and contextual meaning implied within the syiir which emphasizes how important it is to stick with the values of religious moderation for building Indonesian harmony and strengthening national unity within diversity. The religious moderation narrative within the syiir indeed embeds the values of nationalism, tolerance, non-violence and local wisdom respect. Such values are among the pivotal elements to teach and disseminate towards Indonesian generations for the sake of Indonesian harmony.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the problems of establishing worship places in Indonesia and the potential for the development of religious harmony. The previous study explained that the issue of establishing places of worship in Indonesia had been accommodated in the Joint Regulation of the Minister of Religion and the Minister of Home Affairs (PBM) Number 9 and 8 of 2006 concerning the maintenance of religious harmony, empowerment of spiritual harmony forums, and the establishment of houses of worship. Researchers collected data through interviews and document studies of various cases related to conflicts over places of worship in Indonesia. This study uses a conceptual approach to developing the essential elements of sociology and the Strengths Weakness Opportunity Problem Action (SWOPA) analysis method to analyze the root causes and develop alternative policies to improve conflicts over the construction of places of worship in Indonesia. This study indicates that regulations regarding the establishment of houses of worship are used as a means of dialogue and become a legitimation to complicate and exclude the process of establishing houses of worship for minorities from various religions. In addition, the structural, cultural, and processual aspects that exist in the community are essential to be managed to minimize the occurrence of conflict. Stakeholders can also consider this analysis to build inclusive inter-religious relations.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) in succeeding the Indonesian’s public diplomacy through peace agenda for Afghanistan. Cooperation and partnership between Indonesia and Afghanistan entered a new phase with a focus on the conflict reconciliation and capacity building agendas. Indonesia becomes Afghanistan's top choice to become a peace broker between the Afghan government and the Taliban, since no assistance has been offered by other Muslim countries and the Indonesian’s property of Islamic ‘Wasathiyah’ diplomacy has been attractive. Thus, this research will answer why is NU more favorable than its similar moderate organization, Muhammadiyah, and what are the main roles of NU in supporting the government’s agenda. By using interview and collecting secondary data and implementing soft power theory framework, multitrack diplomacy, and public diplomacy, this study found that there are three important roles hold by NU in this case. First, NU as an actor who has credibility in the field of Islamic Wasathiyah discourse, second, NU acts as a strategic collaborative partner of the Indonesian government by engaging in several official state programs, and third, NU carries out its public diplomacy role by initiating independent programs for Afghanistan.

Abstract

This paper discusses the renewal of Islam by Paderi in Minangkabau’s community, west Sumatera, Indonesia. Seventy years after the Paderi movement stopped because young scholars known as the Youth Generation (YG) continued Dutch colonial pressure with original models and characteristics. To delve into this problem, a historical research method was required to test and analyze the vital records and relics of the yesteryear. This research is qualitative. The research and discussion found: first, the reform in Islam consisted of 2 indicators, namely (1) the returns of Islamic purity to the guidance of the Qur'an and Hadiths, and (2) modernization as a representation of the youth movement. Second, the violence by the Paderi was inappropriate if related to Minangkabau’s cultures which were tolerant and familial. The first Islamization process in Minangkabau was also never penetrated by a power of politics such as war. Third, the conflict had triggered a vivacious and dynamic religious discourse. We could see this from many meetings and debates held both during the Paderi and during Youth Generation. Besides, various schools had appeared, publishing books and magazines from each generation to socialize and make a struggle for religious understanding.

Abstract

Al-Khairaat is an Islamic Boarding School founded by a charismatic cleric of Hadramaut descent, Sayyid Idrus bin Sālim Al-Jufrie in Palu, Central Sulawesi. Since its establishment in 1930, more than 500 branches of Al-Khairaat schools have spread in the central, northern, southeast, and western parts of Sulawesi Island to Gorontalo area. The development of Al-Khairaat became interesting because the school curriculum represents a pattern of Hadrāmī tradition offered in society (ahwal). Besides, the charismatic dominance of Sayyid Idrus bin Sālim Al-Jufrie as a descendant of the Prophet became an appeal in gaining public trust in Al-Khairaat. This research aimed to analyze the extent of how the Hadrāmī tradition applied and the influence of Sayyid Idrus Bin Sālim Al-Jufrie as a descendant of the Prophet to develop Al-Khairaat boarding school. The field research was carried out using an ethnographic method. The research results showed that the tradition of Hadrāmī in the form of wirid, dhikr, and shalawat had become an appeal. It conforms to the social conditions of Gorontalo people, who appear to be traditionalists in the practice of religion and some of their people are similar to the rituals of urban sufism. In addition, people who want their children to become proficient in religion often claim that Al-Khairaat can deliver these values. As for the dominance of habāib, it is more noticeable in culture, social, and symbol in the context of a high appreciation of it in society's social stratification and even things considered non-scientific.

Abstract

Recently, there are more and more zakat management institutions offering progressive programs. One of them is micro-economic development that encourages the community's economic sector. However, there are still many Muslims who do not know about that. This study aims to capture the public's perception of the distribution of zakat. It focused on micro-economic empowerment programs. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach through a survey method with a sample of 1129 respondents. Indonesian people already understand the obligations of Muslims. But, this awareness is still lacking. The openness and transparency of each distribution and management of zakat funds will greatly determine public perceptions and influence the subsequent programs. Zakat institutions must be professional and have a positive impact on mustahiq. They have to give assistance and guidance to them in managing trading businesses as micro-economic empowerment.
