Abstract

The use of social media such as Instagram and TikTok is increasingly widespread. Its use is not just to meet the need to communicate but also to disseminate information. Not all information on social media is not all true. Social media has become a means of spreading false information. By applying textual analysis, this paper aims to examine how Instagram and TikTok postings of health issues communicate health information. The findings show that the contents of the postings are misleading, fabricated content, false, and manipulated. It can be concluded that the postings deliver information based on ‘myth’ rather than the correct medical facts

Abstract

Online classes are a solution in education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The change from offline to online classes brings changes to the way students learn. This paper aims to explore English Department students’ learning styles in English online classes. The qualitative descriptive method is applied. The findings show that the student’s learning style applies multimodal modality preference. However, multimodal modality preference in the students’ combination of learning styles also shows a tendency to rely on single modal preference.  This denotes the students’ dominant learning style. It can be concluded that online classes support student learning styles without changing the students’ dominant learning styles.  The implications of the findings denote the power of visual media in students’ learning process. This reinforces the use of media in advanced teaching-learning processes.

Abstract

TikTok has been effective in cultivating a creative arena where users can easily access and make digital material by using a collection of shared audios, filters, text-to-speech, and a special system for user involvement. Digital platform such as TikTok continues to promote social conduct motivated by the need for acceptance from the community. This paper explores Queer’s English language used in Dean Modah's TikTok videos. By applying a sociolinguistic approach, this paper examines the English language used by Queer community to express their identity. The results show that the English language used by Queer community undergoes a morphological process, particularly a coinage process. The meanings of Queer language are different from the lexical meanings. The new meaning formulation denotes the dominant personal function of the language used. The new meaning formulation in Queer English language use is to support the community members to freely express themselves. It can be concluded that word formulation, changes in meaning, and use of language identify the identity of the Queer community.

Abstract

This research discusses Candide's struggle for happiness in Voltaire's Candide from an Islamic perspective. In this study, the researcher discussed two problems, 1) the form of struggle carried out by Candide and 2) the Islamic value of Candide's struggle. The researcher used qualitative methods in this study. The researcher connects Candide's struggle by collecting Qur'anic verses that are following the theme raised. Then, researchers relate to aspects related to the verse through Candide's struggles and actions that are relevant to Islamic values. The form of Candide's struggle can be seen in his personality, such as never give up attitude and positive thinking. Thus, Candide's struggle proved successful as an Islamic struggle because Candide married his lover and lived together, and the value of his struggle for happiness was achieved because of his efforts until the end

Abstract

Media gives children the opportunity to access any English-related contents to watch, listen to, and read. The easy access to media support children’s ability in learning a foreign language. By applying a qualitative approach, this paper aims to examine how media support children’s English pronunciation. The data were obtained from interviews and pronunciation tests. The results show the use of digital media improves children’s English pronunciation. The level of progress in English pronunciation accuracy is supported by the length of time children are exposed to digital media with English content. The inaccuracies in the pronunciation of English words are caused by pronunciation habits in their mother tongue (Indonesian). It is concluded that the critical age and the appropriate length of exposure to digital media with foreign language content greatly determine the ability to pronounce English words as a foreign language.

Abstract

This research discusses the portrayal of the proletariat social class in AKMU's song entitled Dinosaur. This descriptive qualitative research focuses on finding out the class struggle suffered by the proletariat class in South Korea due to the 1998 monetary crisis portrayed by the lyrics of Dinosaur by AKMU, from the Marxism theory by Karl Marx. The song title Dinosaur itself is a metaphor in the context of debt collectors. On that account, the view of the proletariat social class put forward by Karl Marx (1867) is a propitious match for a song analysis in Dinosaur by AKMU. Data were collected by observing the lyrics, music videos, and related interviews with AKMU as the writer, composer, and singer. The data was flocked together by the note-taking approach to discover data to latch onto valid information related. The conclusion shows that Dinosaur by AKMU portrays economic conditions between the proletariat and the ubiquitousness of debt collectors in South Korea due to the 1998 monetary crisis. The solidity of the debt collector industry was bolstered by the emergence of families from the lower middle class who have entangled in the instability of the poverty rate in South Korea at the time the song Dinosaur was released.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying the types and functions of code-switching uttered by the characters in the novel “The Player”. The data was taken from the novel “The Player” by an Indonesian female author, Aliazalea published in 2020. This study used a theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to identify the types of code-switching. Furthermore, the theory proposed by Gumperz (1982) was used to identify the functions applied in the code-switching found in the novel. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data with descriptive presentation. As a result, 35 codes switching were found in the characters in the novel. The types of code-switching proposed by Hoffman (1991) are inter-sentential switching occurred 9 times, intra-sentential switching occurred 15 times, and emblematic switching occurred 11 times. There are 3 functions implied in the code-switching found from 6 functions proposed by Gumperz (1982). They are interjection, message qualification, and personalization. The other 3 functions are quotation, addressee specification, and reiteration which do not appear in the data. From the analysis, it could be concluded that intra-sentential switching is the type of code-switching most frequently used by the characters. Personalization is the function most frequently implied in code-switching as the characters tend to convey their thoughts by switching the language.
