Abstract

Abstract

Virginia Woolf was a British writer. She committed suicide in 1941, leaving suicide notes for her sister and her husband. Her suicide note was made public and was misquoted under the misleading headline in newspapers’ articles. This made people at that time misinterpret her suicide notes. This analysis aims to prove the genuineness of Virginia Woolf’s suicide notes, reveal the intention behind her suicide notes, and investigate the real motive of her suicide with Linguistics Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) program and semantic forensic analysis in forensic linguistics perspective. In conclusion, Virginia Woolf’s suicide notes are considered genuine and have positive emotional tone. The result of this analysis supports the statement of another psychologist that her suicide was triggered by Bipolar disorder.

Abstract

Abstract This study is concerned with translation field, especially on the shift in the process of English—Indonesian translation. It illustrates the types of shift that occurs in the Garuda Magazine. It is also aimed at discovering whether those English Noun Phrases are transferred into Noun Phrases in Indonesian. The principle of loss and gain of information in translation mostly occurs in the transfer of Source Language text to Target Language text. Regarding the research methodology, observation and a note taking technique are applied for the data collection and the theory used for the analysis is restricted to the shift proposed by Catford and the theory of loss and gain of information proposed by Nida.In relation to the above explanation, it is hoped that by recognizing shift and the theory of loss and gain information, the translator will be able to pinpoint and restate meaning more effectively due to it will be easier to get the intended meaning that is going to be translated. After analyzing the data, it was discovered that there were some shifts in translation occurring in the English noun phrases which were also translated into noun phrases in Indonesian as the target language. They were structure shift and intra-system shift. Meanwhile there were also shifts occurring in the translation of English noun phrase which were translated into non NP in the target language. According to the theory proposed by Catford about shift in translation, the shifts occured in this study was called class shift and unit shift. Based on the analysis, it was found that the theory of loss and gain of information proposed by Nida was also mostly applied in the process of transferring the meaning of the noun phrase of the source language text into the target language text.

Abstract

This research aims at identifying the semantic changes in the translation of euphemism and dysphemism of news text of Tempo Magazine. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and took the data from bilingual Tempo Magazine edition 2019 with Indonesian in a source language and its translation into English. The result shows that 6 types of semantic change occur in the translation of euphemism and dysphemism of Tempo Magazines such as semantic broadening, semantic narrowing, semantic metaphor, semantic pejoration, semantic amelioration, and semantic metonymy. When euphemism or dysphemism are translated into the same categories, they undergo semantic broadening, narrowing, metonymy or metaphor. While semantic change pejorations occur when euphemism is translated into dysphemism and semantic change ameliorations occur when dysphemism is translated into euphemism. Even though there are changing of the meaning from the earlier one to the new one in the translation of euphemism and dysphemism, the sense relation still tied the words up so they still have a relation between them
