Abstract

Community-based surveillance is a health effort to identify health problems/cases carried out by the community, which is then addressed by the community with the support of healthcare workers. This activity is one of the self-reliance patterns instilled in the community. Indonesia has more than 20,000 pesantrens as formal educational institutions. Unhealthy environments and inadequate facilities have led to various infectious diseases. Efforts to examine and treat infectious diseases have been carried out by pesantrens, but the problem persists due to unhealthy behavior. Health monitoring and responsibility from pesantren residents are necessary to improve health conditions in pesantrens. Based on this issue, community-based surveillance needs to be implemented in pesantrens. Empowering pesantren communities is a process to increase knowledge, awareness, and skills so that they can actively participate in efforts to prevent and control diseases through an educative and participatory approach while considering potential needs and local socio-cultural aspects. Therefore, a trained Santri-based Surveillance needs to be formed with the responsibility of health monitoring in pesantrens, in the hope of creating a healthy pesantren. Santri-based surveillance is part of community empowerment in pesantren areas

Abstract

The issue of nutrition, such as stunting, falls under Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 2, which aims to eliminate all forms of malnutrition. Stunting is a serious problem as it can impact cognitive abilities, unbalanced bodily functions, and result in an undesirable body posture. One of the causes of the increasing incidence of stunting, particularly in the Porong Sidoarjo Health Center, is the lack of community understanding about health, especially regarding stunting. The prevalence of stunting in Sidoarjo is 23.9%, and in the Porong Health Center's working area, it is 28%. The objective of this community service is to enhance the self-awareness of the community to address the condition of stunting in the Porong Sidoarjo Health Center. The target audience for this community service activity is mothers of infants and toddlers who are indicated as stunted in the Porong Sidoarjo Health Center's working area. The method of this activity involves counseling with presentations, practical exercises on reading high z-scores for height/weight and weight/age, Q&A sessions, and completing pretest and posttest questionnaires. The results of this community service activity indicate that the majority of participants have experienced an increase in knowledge, particularly regarding the characteristics and impacts of stunting, and have improved self-awareness regarding stunting in infants and toddlers.

Abstract

Hypertension, often referred to as the "silent killer," manifests without noticeable symptoms and can lead to serious health complications. It occurs when blood pressure exceeds 130 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic. A precursor to conditions such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure, hypertension is the leading cause of death worldwide, affecting more than one billion people annually. Prevalence increases with age, potentially reaching 60% in populations over the age of 60. Without preventive measures, the number of hypertension cases worldwide is projected to increase by 20% to 1.5 billion by 2025. This study aims to improve community understanding of the hypertension treatment process within both healthcare facilities and hospitals. Methods This community initiative targeted residents of RT 05 RW 01 in Pondok Labu, Cilandak, South Jakarta. The intervention included educational sessions on hypertension, covering its definition, recommended actions when experiencing it, and elucidating the facilities and procedures involved in seeking healthcare in both primary care and hospital settings. The program consisted of three phases: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The Results of 15 targeted residents, 11 actively participated in the assessments and educational sessions. The majority were women aged 36 to 55 years. Blood pressure assessments revealed that 54.55% had elevated levels. In addition, 63.64% were classified as overweight based on BMI measurements. The initiative successfully increased community knowledge regarding hypertension and the healthcare processes involved. The study highlights the importance of health education in improving public awareness and emphasizes the need for a holistic approach in managing risk factors such as excess weight. Effective coordination between hospital administration and medical teams is crucial in providing clear information and ensuring timely healthcare services for hypertensive patients.
