Abstract

Translation is one of the branches of applied linguistics as part of activities in communication between people with various languages. The results of this translation activity are then called translation. However, in every activity, there must be obstacles as well as the translation process. This research discussed the translation shift that occurred in the translation of the webtoon Nae Aidineun Gangnammiin into I Am Gangnam Beauty. The purpose of this research is to present the results of the translation shift analysis of both the text and dialogue that occurs in the I Am Gangnam Beauty webtoon according to its type, and the results of the analysis of the translation stage of the I Am Gangnam Beauty webtoon using the theory of Nida and Taber. The data was collected by noting any translation shift found and then grouping them according to their type and stage of translation. The results showed that the most significant translation shift was skewing of information as much as 37 data (41%), gain of information as much as 29 data (32%), and loss of information as much as 24 (27%). Then the translation stages where the most translation shifts were found were the analysis of 40 data (45%), the transfer of 35 data (39%), and the restructuring of 14 data (16%).

Abstract

Korean students and beginner-level Korean learners often use harsh language because they often learn from shows that use coarse language. Therefore, this study of euphemism aimed to describe (1) variations of euphemisms in the form of words or sentences, taboos, cultural traits, social discrimination, and negative situations (2) the functions of using euphemisms in the book Ancient Korean Indonesian Stories 1. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and pulling a conclusion or verification. Data validity was obtained from data triangulation. The data were analyzed based on the theory of the form and function of euphemism by Kim Mi Hyeong. This research shows the following results. First, the euphemisms of words 86%, and sentences 14%. Forms of euphemisms based on taboo is 71%, (2) social discrimination 10%, (3) negative situations 19%, and zero data were found in the form of cultural traits. Second, the euphemism function (1) the self-protection function is 9%, (2) the purification function is 43%, which is the most dominant function contained in the data in the object of this study. Abstract

Before expressing an opinion, people typically sort and choose their words, for example, selecting terms they believe to be more subtle. Hence, this research aims to discuss the comparison between the meaning and structure of idioms in a novel. The data were taken from the Korean novel as the source language, Phalshipinyeonsaeng Kim Ji Young (82 년생 김지영) by Cho Nam Joo and its translation in Indonesian as the target language, Kim Ji Yeong, Lahir Tahun 1982. Thus, the purpose of this research is to understand the comparison of meanings and structures in idioms of two different languages. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with the results of comparative meaning and structure of idioms from the source language and the target language by discussing semantic studies in the form of their lexical meanings and idiomatic meanings, as well as syntax studies through the constituent structures of these idioms as their theoretical approach. The findings showed the translation techniques, such as translating idioms into idioms, idioms into nonidioms, nonidioms into idioms, and translation by omission of entire idioms. Also, the findings showed the meaning equivalence whether it’s formal or dynamic equivalence in idioms translation that the translator used to convey the message from the author to the reader.

Abstract

This research discussed signs in terms of icons, indexes, and symbols on the variety show named NCT Life: Hot and Young Seoul Trip using the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce. The purpose of this research is to describe icons, indexes, and symbols related to tourism and interpret these signs with contextual meaning. The reason for doing this research is to look for signs that refer to persuasive tourism promotion activities contained in the variety show. This research employed the descriptive qualitative design with the findings on each icon, index, symbol, and contextual meaning presented in the form of a description. The results of this study indicate that there are categories of icons, indexes, and symbols related to tourism promotion in Seoul, South Korea. Icon has three categories related to brand ambassadors, tourist attractions, and tourist activities. The index has four categories related to the background illustration for NCT members introduction, expressions of feelings, figurative expressions, and gestures. The symbol has three categories related to logos, slogans, and additional information related to activities and tourist attractions. Then, the contextual meaning of the signs found leads to several contexts, all of which also refer to tourism promotion activities delivered through the media of variety shows. On this basis, the research suggests that there is tourism promotion packaged in events through variety shows carried out by NCT members as performers by visiting or trying various tourist activities around Seoul and recommending them to the audience.

Abstract

Without even realizing it, language is a common tool we employ in social interactions to interact and communicate. This suggests that humans communicate with one another through language. This research aims to find a compliment response to the drama "Twenty-One Twenty-Five. In this drama, "Twenty-Five Twenty-One," found that there is a compliment response between the characters. Based on Herbert's compliment, responses are divided into 12 forms Appreciation Token, Comment acceptance, Praise Upgrade, Comment history, Reassignment, Return, Scale Down, Question, Disagreement, Qualification, No Acknowledgement, and Request Interpretation. This research used Herbert's compliment responses theory to identify compliment responses from dialogue characters in the drama “Twenty-Five Twenty-One”. This research uses data from dialogue characters in the drama "Twenty-One Twenty-Five” and qualitative method. Next, Simak and Padan's methods were used to identify compliment responses. After collecting compliment response data from the characters’ dialogue, compliment responses are analyzed by implementing a descriptive way. After analyzing compliment response data, the results found that of the 12 praise responses put forward by Herbert, there were 9 compliment responses in the drama. These are Appreciation token, Comment Acceptance, Praise Upgrade, Comment History, Return, Scale Down, Question, Disagreement, and also No Acknowledgement. Korean people tend to respond to compliments not only by saying "감사합니다 (gamsahamnida)" or "고마워 (gomawo)", but also use another expression to respond to some compliments, such as a smile or the person is accepting the compliment, but adding some comment.
