Abstract

Agama dan kebudayaan merupakan dua dimensi esensial dalam hidup. manusia. Baik dalam kehidupan pribadi (individual) maupun kehidupan bersama (komunal), kedua dimensi sosial ini menjadi rujukan yang penting, kalau bukan dominan. Agama pada dasarnya memberikan gagasan-gagasan yang mengangkat manusia dari sekedar makhluk sosial dan rasional menjadi makhluk spiritual yang mampu mentransendensi dirinya. Agama membina manusia dalam berelasi dengan Pencipta dan Pemelihara kehidupan ini yang kita panggil dengan berbagai sebutan, seperti Allah, Tuhan, atau Sanghyang Widhi dan sebagainya dengan berbagai atribut-Nya yang serba-maha Daniel Pals misalnya menyebutkan Yahwe (the one God) bagi Yudaisme, Tao (the Way of Nature) bagi Konfusianisme atau Brahman (the Supreme Spirit) bagi Hinduisme (1996: 247). Sedangkan kebudayaan merupakan ekspresi total dari manusia yang berkorelasi dengan sesama makhluk ciptaan dan dunia naturalnya. Dengan kata lain, agama dan kebudayaan merupakan ekspresi proses humanisasi yang tidak pernah selesai, di mana nilai-nilai kemanusiaan dan keilahian tali temali demi suatu dunia bersama' (ekumene) yang penuh makna, di mana setiap orang memiliki pengalaman sebagai 'putra atau putri pilihan' Yang Mahatinggi.

Abstract

Global peace is an actual issue that is almost relevant to every corner of the world. While conflicts for any reason seem to be unavoidable, many people understand that there are many innocent victims. Many of these victims in fact have nothing to do with the core of the conflict, however, they suffer a lot. Therefore, some significant and crucial steps should be taken in order to promote peace. Using a case of woman movent in Wajir, Kenya, the author proposes that the first step is to realise that there are moral values that could serve as inner power to promote peace. Further steps should be strategically planned according to certain context, such as "what conflict, who are involved, when and where it occured, and how it would be excuted.

Abstract

In many traditional communities, sex is considered a unsuitable subject to discuss or at least to talk about openly. This notion is in fact still intact in Indonesia, including among urban communities. Therefore, when sexuality is chosen to be the theme of a novel, moreover written by a woman, it becomes a subject of controversy and raises a lot of open debate and polemic. Apart from many objections, some Indonesian woman writters keep the subject alive in modern Indonesian literature. The author highlights the potrait of "genitals" from insight of women writters. Some are phylosophical, some are more touching the reality of life. The author also presents the idea of gender inequality in the area of literature. In the past it was dominated by male writters, so the recent appearance of some woman writters becomes an interesting phenomenon in Indonesian literature.

Abstract

The author discusses about Islam in Java, that has a very unique character in terms of religious rites and expression. At the very beginning, the spread of Islam adopted the process of acculturation with local cultures. The acculturation is not just an expression of heterogenuous Javanese culture, but very much supported by political power. Mataram Islamic Kingdom had played a very crucial role in combining Islamic belief with the local culture that was very much influenced by Budhism and Hinduism. The author also highlights the deterioration of Islamic elites and grass-roots because of the presence of colonialism in 19th century. However, the notion of acculturation remains intact and serves as a form of religious tolerance character among Javenese Moslems.

Abstract

Ethnic and religious conflicts and violence have spread throughout the archipelago, not only in the last few years, but also since the independence of the Republic (1945). They look like a 'repetitive ritual' of the people and it seems that nobody nor any institution could stop them, neither the government. How- ever, there are always people of good will who try to minimize the tension of the conflicts and the victims of all these indiscriminate violence. This article tries to examine the problem from the mission and pastoral perspective of the Church, namely, from her fundamental and main call to build up peace throughout the country. Therefore, issues on ethnic-religious conflicts, violence and peace should be the core of the Church's mission agenda for the coming few decades.

Abstract

The relation between faith and reason has become an important issue since the rise of Christianity. When Christianity began to introduce a set of revealed truths, the authoritative power of reason was restricted by the necessity of faith in the absolute truth of Christian Revelation. As such that it substituted the role of philosophy as the way of life and the wisdom. Philosophy lost its autonomous status and hardly existed on its own. The use of philosophy was restricted to the service for defending and articulating the truth of faith as to be the handmaid for theology. However, for Etienne Gilson, The Middle Ages, which is also known the darkness era of Philosophy, provides its own dimension to characterize the unique identity of philosophy. He describes as "the spirit of Christianity penetrating the Greek tradition, working within it, drawing out of it a certain view of the world, specifically Christian," which is called "Christian Philosophy." Is Christian Philosophy a philosophy? How about the term itself? Does it seems to be self-destroying?
