Abstract

This objective of this research is to know whether Mind Mapping is more effective than Guided Question in teaching speaking for fourth semester of English education study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. In experimental research, the researcher deals with the research instrument of collecting data: (1) giving the pre-test (2) dividing the classes who have Mind Mapping and Guided Question (3) applying the teaching technique to the students (4) giving post test, and (5) analyzing the students’ score to decide the teaching technique whether or not it is effectives. The research findings show that the use of Mind Mapping can affect the students’ speaking ability optimally. It is proved from research findings which t-observed value 3.189 is higher than t-table of 1.671 at the significant level of 5% which means that the Mind Mapping is more effective than Guided Question to speaking ability; therefore it is recommended that the lecturers are suggested to apply Mind Mapping in speaking activity, to be more creative and innovative in using various kinds of interesting teaching technique with accompany the materials.

Abstract

The purpose of this research are to know the students’ ability in identifying moral lesson of narrative text at grade VIII of Mts. PP. Tunas Harapan Tembilahan. The research design was Descriptive research. The population of this research was 68 students and the sample also was 68 students. The technique of taking the sample in this research was total sampling because the population less than 100 students. To get the data of students’ ability in identifying moral lesson of narrative text, the researcher gave identifying moral lesson of narrative text test to 68 students. Before giving the test to the sample, the researcher did the validity test in the other school in order to get the valid questions. The researcher did the validity test at grade VIII MTs. Nurul Jihad Tembilahan Hulu, there were 17 students who answered the validity test, and from the validity test the researcher got 7 questions that is not valid. The test asked about moral lesson from the character in narrative text and the moral lesson of narrative text. The result of the test showed that there were 9 students (13%) were classified as having good, 55 students (81%) were classified as having enough, and 4 students (6%) were classified as having poor. So, the researcher finds that the mean of student’s score was 53,5, and it was categorized Enough. So, the researcher can conclude that the students less comprehend in identifying moral lesson of narrative text, it showed from the percentage result where the students who having good score only 13%. It because identifying moral lesson of narrative text is not easy, the students must comprehend before to indentifying moral lesson of narrative text.

Abstract

Analysis on writing competence has been being interesting issue to reserach in order to gain more effective and accurate conclusion. One of the issues was on academic writing, argumentative essay composition. This current inqury aimed at investigating to what extent the students’ argumentative essay compostion competence. On the shake of the pupose, it was designed as survey research, which took 30 students of the fifth semester of English Study Program of FKIP – UNISI Tembilahan as the participants. They were asked for writing an argumenttaive essay. The indicators assessment involved format, mechanics, contents, oganization and grammar. After analyzing the data, the results revealed that the students’ competence on each of writing aspect was extremely varied. Some students could achieved maximum score, yet others could not. It was proven from the findings that there were five students (16.66%) who achieved very good classification, thirteen students (43.33%) were placed in good level, and twelve students (40%) were categorized in enough level. Overall, their competence was in level enough to very good level. It is suggested that they need to improve their performance to get better results.

Abstract

This research aims at describing about whether or not the pictures are able to improve students’ ability in using degrees of comparison of adjective to 19 students of the grade VIII of MTs Nurul Jihad Tembilahan Hulu. In this research, the researcher conducted a research design by using CAR. The instruments used to understanding the different of pictures in form of multiple choice test, observation sheets, and interview. Based on the findings, the result of posttest on the first cycle gained 6 students (31.6%) who are able to pass the KKM by mean score 67.8. The score did not reach the criteria of successful. Meanwhile, the posttest on the second cycle gained 13 students (68.4%) who passed the KKM and derived mean score is 81.3, it has reached the criteria of successful. There was an improvement of the students’ ability in using degrees of comparison of adjective from cycle one and cycle two as much as 13.5%. Thus, the researcher did not continue to the next cycle. In addition, students’ responses to learning are generally positive. Most of them were interested and more able about the degrees of comparison of adjective. Not only by using pictures but also the ways in teaching learning able to improve students’ ability in using degrees of comparison of adjective. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of pictures and the ways in teaching learning process are able to improve students’ ability in using degrees of comparison of adjective.

Abstract

This research is purposed to know students’ ability in using Reported speech. The problem of this research is students’ ability in using Reported Speech in unknown yet. Therefore, to solve the problem in this research was descriptive quantitative research. The population of the research was students at grade X of SMA Muhammadiyah Tembilahan. The number of population in this research was 22 students.In this research the researcher used total sampling technique as the taking sample technique, because sample in this research was all of the population and it was less than 100. The data collecting technique in this research was used test in essay test. The number of the items was 25 questions. The students were changed Direct speech into Reported speech. The finding of this research shows that the mean score of the first indicator (Simple Present Tense into Simple Past Tense) was 49.31 it was categorized in enough level. The result of the second indicator (Simple Past Tense into Simple Past Perfect Tense) was 56.95it was categorized enough level. Then, the total mean score from two indicators before the researcher could concluded the result of this research that the students’ ability in using Reported Speech was enough with mean score 52.54. In addition, the students’ classification score showed that 5 students who get good score, 12 students who get enough score, and 5 students who get poor score. Therefore, could be concluded that the students have low ability in using Reported Speech.

Abstract

Perception toward a material taught in the classroom is crucial to be investigated in which it influences the result of learning. The objective of this study is to identify students’ perception of listening to English Monologue in the fifth semester of English Study Program of UNISI. This aim was achieved through a descriptive qualitative design. The sample of this research was the students in the fifth semester of English Study Program of UNISI Tembilahan. They consist of 25 students. By conducting this research, the researcher found that students’ perception of listening to English monologue in the fifth semester of English Study Program of UNSI is categorized into less level. It can be interpreted that listening to monologue is difficult. Therefore, based on this result, the researcher assumed that the students’ low result is caused by their less perception of listening to monologue.
