Abstract

This research investigated the types of linguistic forms of English register and the meaning of register used in The Jakarta Post Football news. The linguistic forms that are investigated are specifically in content words and noun phrases. To obtain the data, documentation was used as the instrument. The data were analyzed using the model proposed by Elo and Kyangas (2007), it was found that there are two kinds of data in the form of content words, eight data of nouns, two verbs. In the form of the noun phrase, the researcher found two data in the category of attributive adjective and seven data of nouns in noun phrases. All of English registers found in The Jakarta Post’s football news have different meanings when compared with their conceptual meaning in the dictionary. The most dominant type of change in meaning is social meaning.

Abstract

The scientific approach constitutes an approach to Indonesia's 2013 curriculum. Since it is imperative for Indonesian education, all teachers need to understand, manage, and apply it in the teaching-learning process. Unfortunately, many English teachers still use inappropriate methods as in the 2013 curriculum. This qualitative research aims at discovering the implementation of a scientific approach by English teachers at State Senior High School in Lhokseumawe. The objects were English teachers at SMAN 1 Lhokseumawe, SMAN 2 Lhokseumawe, and SMAN 5 Lhokseumawe. The tools used in this study were observation for three high school English teachers in the schools. The observation results toward the implementation of five scientific approach stages exposed that the English teachers did not carry out the five stages completely. The teacher should master, understand, and apply the teaching process by following the whole stages of the scientific approach. Class mastery and time management are vital for the learning process. Thus, the teachers should consider those points. Hence, interesting supporting media, appropriate learning material, and methods must be considered by the teachers in teaching so that the students will be motivated to learn.

Abstract

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is an examination used to evaluate a non-native English speaker’s proficiency in the English language. This study was conducted to investigate the obstacles faced by the junior lecturers of Syiah Kuala University in achieving the required TOEFL scores. This research applied a focused description as a method of collecting the data and was located within qualitative research. The population of this research was 23 junior lecturers of Syiah Kuala University who were participating in a training class at the Language Centre of Syiah Kuala University and are in preparation for further study in either home country or overseas universities. The instrument of data collection is a questionnaire guide with google form that was sent to 23 junior lecturers. The questionnaire was used to find out the obstacles faced by the junior lectures in achieving the required TOEFL scores. The collected were analysed by using compiling the percentage, adopting the formula proposed by Sudjono. The finding shows that junior lecturers faced obstacles in answering listening to long conversations with a percentage of 93.3% and avoiding similar sounds with a percentage of 80%. The specific obstacles in the structure written expression section were the skill in answering coordinate connectors, agreement after certain words, and parallel structure with coordinate conjunctions questions with the percentage 60%. The other obstacles were skills in answering agreement after prepositional phrases and skill in agreement after prepositional phrases questions with the percentage 67.7%. Then, the obstacles faced by them in reading comprehension were in recognizing main ideas and determining meanings of difficult words questions with the percentage of 67.7%. It is suggested that the junior lecturers should improve their English proficiency before they take the TOEFL test.

Abstract

This study aims at finding the high and low achievers’ learning style preferences and the teachers’ understanding about the students’ learning style preferences in learning English at MAN 1 Banda Aceh. The survey of this study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. A questionnaire was used to explore the students’ learning style preferences, while an interview was used to get specific information about the teachers’ opinions on students’ learning style preferences in learning English. Willing (1988) category of learning style that consists of communicative, concrete, authority-oriented and analytical learning styles were used. The result of the questionnaire showed that the high achievers’ dominant learning style was the communicative one with a mean value of 3.12 and a standard deviation of 0.65. At the same time, the low achievers also favoured communicative learning style with a mean value of 3.11 and a standard deviation of 0.63. While the interview shows that the teachers were aware and understood well about students’ learning style preferences in learning English. In conclusion, by understanding their characteristics in absorbing information, the students can develop the skills in various ways to make it easier, faster and more successful for them in their learning.

Abstract

Pragmatics deals with language use in the context that relates to the speech acts' meaning. Politeness strategies and politeness principles, as the manifestation of pragmatics, are two determining communication factors of both speaker and hearer. This qualitative study was intended to analyze the politeness strategies used by the main character Mulan and her family. The data were collected using the observation checklist adapted from Brown and Levinson (1987) framework for politeness strategies. The findings showed that all of Brown and Levinson’s strategies were found in Mulan’s and the other characters’ utterances in the movie. The most frequently used strategy was positive politeness, which was found to occur four times in the movie. Bald-on record and negative politeness were the second most used strategies in the movie with three occurrences each. While off-record and don’t do FTA occurred twice and once, respectively. The result of the pragmatic analysis showed that the use of politeness strategies in Mulan movie was influenced and determined by the characters’ cultural background.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the proficiency level of English for Foreign Language (EFL) students based on their TOEFL scores. The samples for this descriptive quantitative study consisted of 30 English Education Department students from Syiah Kuala University and Ar-Raniry State Islamic University. The scores gathered from the organised TOEFL test were analysed according to the CEFR reference levels to categorise the English proficiency level of the students. The total TOEFL scores gathered showed that, on average, the students placed in the B1 (intermediate) level of English proficiency. Individually, there were four students in the A2 (elementary) level, 15 students in the B1 (intermediate) level, ten students in the B2 (upper intermediate) level, and one student in the C1 (advanced) level of proficiency. Regarding the skills proficiency, on average, the students achieved the B2 (upper intermediate) level in the first section, which was higher than the remaining two sections that averaged on the B1 (intermediate) level. The students’ proficiency levels found in this study showed that, on average, they were able to pass the universities’ TOEFL graduation requirement but still fall short for abroad scholarship admission.

Abstract

The Indonesian Government takes serious measure on the future prospect of the teacher education graduates who are considered not to have a standardized competence ability to become a professional teacher. It inflicted some responses that opposed with the implementation of the program. This issue highlights the need for a more thorough investigation on the legitimacy of new teachers in Indonesia, as well as their quality. The goal of this study is to learn about pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their own competency and readiness to teach. This quantitative study used internet-based questionnaires to collect the data. The participants were 67 undergraduate students of university in Lamongan, East Java Province. The result of this research showed that p value (.258) is higher () than ɑ value (.05). It means that there were no correlation between pre-service teachers’ perception of their competence and their readiness for teaching profession. Nevertheless, the pre-service teachers have a positive perception regarding their competence and readiness to teach in a professional setting. By realizing and considering their competence and readiness for the teaching profession, they willfeel more confident and ready to face the real environment of teaching as a profession.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) technique enhances students' reading comprehension. The data used in this study were gathered using a library research methodology. Some of the literature sources used in this study included books and journals. The steps involved in the data analysis technique are data identification from pertinent literature sources, location identification, data acquisition, data evaluation, and data incorporation into the research presentation. The findings of this study demonstrate that students' reading comprehension abilities increased after receiving treatment with the DRTA technique employing its three fundamental steps (Predicting, Reading, and Proving). The students' test results supported the findings, and the application of the DRTA technique can assist pupils in resolving their reading difficulties. In conclusion, the DRTA approach is regarded as a successful teaching method that helps raise students' reading comprehension abilities.

Abstract

This study was aimed to investigate the teachers’ strategy used by the teachers in assisting their students to win story telling contests. The study employed the qualitative approach with multiple case study as the design. The teachers from five schools considered as the role model based on the number of their students’ achievement in storytelling contest were interviewed. The data were then analyzed by data condensation, data display and conclusion (Miles, Huberman, Saldana, 2018). The conclusion of the study illustrated that the preparation process conducted by those teachers were motivation through emphasizing the benefit of joining the storytelling contest, providing a role model of a successful storyteller, enabling the parents approach to strengthen the benefit of storytelling to the students, avoiding a winning oriented competition that put more burden to their shoulders, and facilitating internal competitions. Moreover, the result found that the coaching strategy used by the teachers were adjusting duration, reading the story, modelling, observing, and giving feedback. Lastly, the sources of storytelling model that the teachers used were also available.
