Abstract

AbstractAny educational process implied by contextual teaching and learning(CTL) aims at helping students comprehension of the academic materials they are studying by connecting academic subjects with the contexts of their daily life. The present article is based on a research which developed a set of instructional materials to help teachers and their students achieve that aim.The instructional materials developed were adapted from a model submitted by Thiaragajan et al., which includes the steps of defining, designing, and developing. Assessment of the materials was done through experts judgment on and teachers and students responses to the materials. The final revised set of the materials were tried out at a state junior high school, SMPN 23, in Surabaya. During the try-out, teachers and students activities were observed and quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed.The results of the research show that the instructional materials (1) have the characteristics of (a) connecting the subject matter with daily life, (b) having been developed with attention paid to students learning styles, (c) developing higher-order thinking, (d) reflecting interest in students prior knowledge, (e) supporting the shaping of democratic and interactive learning situations, (f) providing teachers with more ease in their work, and (g) making more students like studying physics and (2) can help students achieve mastery learning.Key words: CTL, instructional materials for CTL

Abstract

AbstractMulticulturalism is a concept which admit cultural differentiations in the egality and equality. This concept is still relevance in the nation concept that has cultural differentiations such as Indonesian. Education is one of an effective media for multiculturalism development. Historicaleducation, as a concept, is aimed to build a democracy, nationalism, and multiculturalism character.One of the historical unit which has studied heterogeneous of Indonesia is local history. This article supposes to identify; 1) how the role of local history education builds multiculturalism, 2) how the concept of effectivity of local history education develop multiculturalismcharacter.The local history studies can give the historical awareness of society differentiations for students. The studies of socials differentiation in last time, will shape multiculturalism characters. Local history teaching can be done with three models; 1) out class history teaching, 2) team teaching among social studies teachers, and 3) insert local history in the subjects that is relevance with National History.Key words: multiculturalism, local history, education

Abstract

Advances in science the technology in general and thos related to transfer of informationa in particular have, besides positive effects, negative effects as well. Among the negative effects on society are moral and spiritual erosions in daily life. Education of values intended to be an effort to achieve the maintenance of an inner self sensitive to and filled with total comprehension of praiseworthy values has not been able to trnsfer the knowledge of values necessary for learners in dailing with the challenges facing them in their life to come. Success in education of values is especially important for the building of attitude and personality of prospective leaders.In orde to achieve deserable future leadership, it is necessary to establish in the profesional educatioan of leader candidates, especially in relation to their character building, some reorientation in their value education. Such reorientation can be in the form of, firs, enhancing the roles of the actors of education for all learners that will result in free dom in thinking, in being crative, in developing the imagination, and in materializing the values they believe to be good and true in thir life.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an essential part in language, for the nature of language is spken. But, most learners of Engglish in the environment where a research was undertaken faced problems with the pronunciation of English. Ths study aims (1) finding out the effectiveness of dubbing aas technique for teaching the pronunciation of English, and (2) identifying the commonly mispronounced sounds of English.The experimental study involved semester 1 students of English Department of Teachir Training and Education Faculty of Universita Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in the Academic Year 2005/2006. Out of 120 student that had been split into 5 smaller groups by the management authority for practical purpose, 2 grups have been chose as the research sample groups on the basis of equality in the pre-test result. Group A2 has been the Expreimental Group and Group A1 has been the Congrol Group. The teaching dan learning process in te former employed dubbing system as the main technique, while the classroom learning activities is the latter used drill in most of the time. After 6 sessions (within 6 weeks) a post-test was administered. Data collected through the post-test were analyzed using descriptive statistical opeerations of mean, frequency distribution, percentage and the t-test inferential statistical tool

Abstract

Redox reaction is one of difficult concept to be understood. It is coused mainly by existing reaction redox balancing methods that give students some difficultness. For that case, this paper was meant to discuss about modifying reaction redox balancing method so that it can be acquired more easily.Algebra mothod is too mathematical. The more complex the reaction is, the more diffcult its solution is. The complexity of rule of half reaction method on balancing redox reaction brings difficult under-standing on studens also. Even, on a particuler condition, balanceing process lead to break the rules.Half rection method modification can simplity the rule students have to rote. Simplifying the method will reduce student bourdon.. By this modification method, students neet just to remember that in every conditon. OH and H ion is used to balance O and H atom respectively.

Abstract

AbstractConsidering on the Indoesian Teacher and Lecturer Act, every Indonesian teacher needs to have a teacher certification. Indeed, it is a good opportunitiy as well as a challence for every university, which is conducting teacher training program, to have qualified graduates. As a qualified teacher, he must have four competencies concerning pedagogy, attitude, personal, and social. The question that may arise is How to have such competencies? Of course, many ways can be done. However, improving the quality of teaching practicum is one of the many possibilities that can be considered. Integrated Student Community Service - Teaching Practicum (KKN-PPL) which is combiningcommunity service program and teaching practicum itself has been developed by Yogyakarta State University (UNY) to have a better model of such teaching practicum.Being a new model, KKN-PPL must be analized regularly and continuously to get a better quality of it. Infact, it has been evaluated anually by involving some principals or headmasters, students, lecturers,and the developer team of KKN-PPL. There are many comments, suggestions, criticism, and questions of them that need to be responded. However, the three points such as the main reason for having KKN-PPL, the long time periode needed, and the way how to develop it are really good points that need to be clarified. This paper is presented for giving information and answering such questions.Key words: KKN-PPL, Teaching Practicum, Students Teacher

Abstract

A Challenge for education in the ongoing era of globalization is the demand for qualityin human resources. Qualifiedhuman resources are thoese having a competent professionalism, acrativity in recognizing social gaps and finding their solutions, and a global view.The teaching materials in classes of Civic Education have tended to teach the students about the physical aspects of defending the country. The development of demoeratic values, social values of the society, awareness of law, and social disipline has not been the main purpose of the Civic Education class. The teaching method employed has also been the same as that of the class of Pancasila, of which the essence is indoctrination in the truthfulnes of Indonesia Ideology. Thes will only bring results in the cognitive sphere, and leave the aspects of attitude and behavior untouched

Abstract

AbstractThe classroom action research was carried out in order to : (1) make students easier in understanding geometrical formulas; (2) raise the students achievement about geometrical formula understanding and its application especially in the case of plane area. : (3) motivate the students to understand geometrical formulas; and (4) make the teaching-learning of understanding geometrical formulas would be more effective.The research was carried out at the fith grade of state elementary school called Terbantaman II in Depok Sleman Yogyakarta. The Researchwas carried out in three cycles with each sycle consisting of planning, actuating , observing and reflecting. The research data were collected by instruments namely the achievement test, observation and interview. Quantitative data were analysed by descriptive statistics; that was by searching for the mean and by a test of difference, where as qualitative data were analysed by an interpretative descriptive.The research finding showed that the teaching of the plane area formulas of rectangulars and triangles by realistic approach could raise the students eagerness and motivation in learning , understanding as well as applying the plane area. It could be concluded that the teaching method applied could raise students achievement in learning the plane area formula especially rectangulars and triangels. In othe words, the teaching of geometrical formulas by realistic approach could raise the students understanding about geometrical formulas.Key words: Understanding geometrical formulas, realistic approach, and the elementary school.

Data collectedthrough the post-test were analyzed using descriptive statistical operations of mean, frequency distribution, percentage and the t-test inferential statistical tool.Results of the research data analyses have revealed that teaching pronunciation with dubbing technique has not given a satisfactory outcome and a significant effect on the pronunciation mastery. To this finding dubbing is not recommended for use in teaching the pronunciationof English, but of course further studies on related content are immediately required to confirm this finding. Results of the data analyses have also shown that [], [əu], [ei], and [ə] constitute the most commonly mispronounced vowel sounds of English. Based on this finding, careful attention should be paid to these sounds when we teach the vowel sounds of English.Key words: effectiveness, dubbing, the pronunciation of English, drill
