Abstract

Abstract: Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a biomarker of lipid peroxidation that is closelycorrelated with level of oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to know ethanolextract activities from E.americana leaves against blood plasma MDA in male Wistar ratsexposed by cigarette smoke using tiobarbituric acid test. The simplicia extracted bymaseration using 70% ethanol. Twenty four rats were divided into six groups, i.e. : anormal group, an exposed cigarette smoke (negative) control group, a positive controlgroup and three treatment groups. One normal group received carboxyl methyl celluloseand another groups exposed cigarette smoke during 14 days. Positive control groupreceived vitamin E (18mg/kg BW), and another groups received ethanol extract ofE.americana leaves doses 180; 90; 45mg/kg BW, respectively. The MDA level wasanalysed by spectrophotometer UV-Visible in 532,2 nm. The MDA level staticallyanalysis by Kruskal-Wallis test and following by Mann-Whitney test. The mean MDAlevels of normal group, negative control group, positive control group and groupsreceived ethanol extract of E.americana leaves doses 180; 90; 45mg/kg BW were0,11±0,09; 13,74±2,84; 0,06±0,03; 10,88±2,19; 0,13±0,03; 0,03±0,02 ppm. The meanMDA levels of groups received ethanol extract of E.americana leaves doses at 180; 1 90mg/kg BW significantly (p<0,05) lower than negative control group. These resultsshow the beneficial effect of ethanol extract of E.americana leaves in the MDA levelreducing on the rats that exposed by cigarette. Key words: Eleutherine americana, cigarette smoke, MDA

Abstract

Exposure to cigarette smoke is one of the exogenous free radicals. Exposure tocigarette smoke is associated with lung inflammation, oxidative stress and lipidperoxidation. Compounds that can inhibit the oxidation reaction by binding free radicalsknown as antioxidants. Eleutherine americana Merr. leaves has an antioxidant activity ininvitro study. The aim of this work was to study E.americana leaves as a naturalantioxidant that reduce the level of lung damage from exposure to cigarette smoke inmale wistar rats and study effective dose of E.americana leaves to reduce the level oflung damage.  The leaves of E.americana extracted by maceration method for 6 daysusing ethanol 70%. Rats were divided into six groups of four animals each : exposed toambient air (GroupA), exposed to cigarette smoke (Group B), exposed to cigarette smokeand treated with ethanol extract of E.americana leaves at dose 45mg/kg bw, 90mg/kg bw,180mg/kg bw (Group C,D,E), exposed to cigarette smoke and treated with vitamin E dose 18mg/kg bb(Group F). All rats were treated for 14 days using 3 cigarettes non filteredeach day by using a smoking chamber. After 14 days rats were killed. Right lungs wereremoved for histopathology. The results showed that dose 45mg/kg bw, 90mg/kg bw,180mg/kg bw can reduce the level of lung damage to the enlarge of alveolar, thickeningof the alveolar wall and inflammatory cell infiltration. Abstract

Abstrak. Jamu gendong kunci suruh merupakan campuran bahan segar daririmpang temu kunci (Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb.) Schlecht) dan daun sirih (Piper betle L.) yang memiliki kandungan senyawa yang dapat berperan sebagaiantidiabetes. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas jamu gendong kunci suruh sebagai antidiabetes. Dua puluh lima ekor tikus (Rattus norvegicus)Wistar jantan dibagi dalam lima kelompok. Kelompok normal (tidak diinduksiSTZ dan diberikan CMC1% satu kali sehari), kelompok STZ (diinduksi STZ dandiberikan CMC1% satu kali sehari), kelompok glibenklamid (diinduksi STZ dandiberikan glibenklamid 0,27mg/200gBB satu kali sehari), dan kelompok jamugendong kunci suruh dosis 1 dan dosis 2 (diinduksi STZ dan diberikan jamugendong kunci suruh dosis 1 (1,9ml/200gBB) dan dosis 2 (3,8ml/200gBB) duakali sehari). STZ sebagai agen diabetogenik diinduksikan pada tikus dengan dosistunggal 7mg/200gBB secara intraperitonial. Tikus kemudian diberi perlakuanselama 28 hari. Pengukuran kadar glukosa darah dilakukan pada hari ke-0, 4, 8,12, 16, 18, 20, 24, dan 28 menggunakan glukometer. Setelah 28 hari dilakukanhistopatologi pankreas dengan pewarnaan Hematoksilin-Eosin (HE) dan diamati kerusakan pulau Langerhans pankreas dengan mikroskop cahaya. Persentasekerusakan pulau Langerhans pankreas (vakuolisasi dan kongesti) dihitung menggunakan aplikasi ImageJ. Data kadar glukosa darah dianalisis menggunakanmetode One Way ANOVA. Data kuantitatif kerusakan pulau Langerhans pankreasdianalisis menggunakan uji Kruskal Wallis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwajamu gendong kunci suruh memiliki aktivitas antidiabetes dengan menurunkankadar glukosa darah dan mengurangi kerusakan pulau Langerhans pankreasdengan dosis efektif 1,9ml/200gBB.Kata kunci : streptozotocin, diabetes melitus, jamu gendong kunci suruh

Abstract

Acne is a skin disorder which is caused by the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. One of thesubstances that can be benefitted as an antibacterial product is Pontianak citrus (Citrus nobilisLour. Var. Microcarpa) peel essential oil. Essential oil is obtained through the process ofsteam distillation. This study aims to determine the effect of formulated antibacterial creamof essential oil of Pontianak citrus’ peel to P. acnes isolates by disc diffusion method (KirbyBauertest).EssentialoilsformulatedindosageformscreamwithessentialoilconcentrationratioF1 (0.025%), F2 (0.05%) and F3 (0,1%). Evaluation of organoleptic examinations ofsuch preparations include odor, color, shape and homogeneity, dispersive power testing,adhesion, pH and antibacterial. Data analysis is done by using the R-Commander programversion 2.14.1. The results showed that the inhibitory zone in F1, F2 and F3 is 18mm, 20mmand 21,67mm. The evaluation results indicate a homogeneous preparation, pH is inaccordance to the peel’s pH and there is a decrease of adhesion and increase of dispersivepower. The results of antibacterial cream evaluation showed that formula 1 gives the besteffectiveness with inhibition zone of 18 mm to the P. acnes isolates. Abstract

Cigarette smoke is one of free radical source that can cause oxidative stress, emphysema, and inflamation on lung. Leaves of Premna cordifolia Linn. isone of antioxidant that can neutralize the free radical in body. The purpose of theresearch  is to find the antioxidant activity of Premna cordifolia leaves in reducinglung’s damage and to find the effective dose that can reduce lung’s damage afterexposure of cigarette smoke. Dried leaves of Premna cordifolia are maseratedwith ethanol 70%.  Rats are divided into five groups, Group without treatment(CMC control), group that exposed to smoke, three groups that treated with 200(P1), 400 (P2), and 600mg/kgBW (P3) of ethanolic extract of Premna cordifolialeaves after smoke exposure, and one group that treated with 18mg/kgBW ofvitamin E as positive control after smoke exposure. All groups were treated withthree cigarette without filter for 14 days. All rat were terminated on the fifteentday. Right lung were collected and subjected to necropsy and stained withHematoksilin-Eosin. The result show that all doses of ethanolic extract of Premnacordifolia reduce lung damage in enlarge alveolar, thickening of alveolar’s wall,and infiltration of inflmation cells in rats. The effective dose is 600mg/kgbwbecause the potential of Premna cordifolia leaves extract was same with thepotential of positive contol in reducing the lung damage. Abstract

Infection can caused by the pathogenic bacteria like Staphylococcusaureus and Escherichia coli. Synthetic antibacterial compounds could preventinfection but also had side effect,for example irritation. This became a trigger toproduced another product based on nature. Essential oil from Pontianak orangepeel (Citrus nobilis Lour. var. microcarpa) that contain antibacterial activity couldbe used to formulate the product. The purpose of this research was to know theeffectiveness of antibacterial activity of liquid soap from essential oil of Pontianakorange peel againts Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using discdiffusion method. This research was conducted with experimental method andused variation of essential oil concentration such as FI (0,05%); F2 (0,15%);F3(0,25%). The liquid soap then got physical and chemistry analysis such asorganoleptic, foaming power, density, viscosity, pH, and total fatty acids and alsoirritation test. The results of the research showed that the three formulas of liquidsoaps fulfill SNI’s standard of liquid soaps, not cause irritation and also showedbest effectiveness at F1 (0,05%) with 7,17 mm zone of inhibition ofStaphylococcus aureus and 18,59 mm zone of inhibition  of Escherichia coli.Keywords: antibacterial, essential oil of Pontianak orange peel, liquid soap

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is one of dermatosis problem’s that appear most at teenagerand caused by Propionibacterium acnes bacteria that had important role at acnes’phatogenesis. The purpose of this research was to know the effectiveness ofantibacterial activity from essential oil of pontianak orange peel that is formulatedas a transparent soap.  The transparent soaps were formulated using the isolate ofPropionibacterium acnes and disc diffusion  method (Kirby-Bauer test). Theisolate of Propionibacterium acnes was a result from sample isolation of subjectsthat had a dermatosis problem such as acnes. The essential oils were formulated asa transparent soap with variation concentration of active content into threeformulas, FI (0,025%); FII (0,05%); and FIII (0,1%) The result of transparentsoap then got physical and chemistry analysis such as color, fragrance, texture,foaming power, transparency, water content, free alkali, fatty acids total,unsaponifiable fraction, the height of foam, pH, and antibacterial activity of thetransparent soap. The results the analyzed using R-Commander Program 1.24.1.The results of evaluation showed that the transparent soaps from the essential oilof Pontianak orange peel were acceptable but there were few evaluation that werenot acceptable compared to the SNI standard. The effectiveness of antibacterialactivity from the transparent soap showed that F3 with 0,1% concentration ofessential oil give the best effectiveness with 20,84 ± 1,56 mm zone of inhibition. Abstract

Kudu laos traditional drink is a mixture of Morinda citrifolia L. fruit extract and Alpinia galanga L. rhizome. Both of the plants are known haveantidiabetic activity from in vivo data. The purpose of this study is to determinethe antidiabetic effect of kudu laos traditional drink in lowering blood glucoselevels and percent of the area damage islet of langerhans. Twenty five male wistarrat are divided into five groups: normal group (no treatment), streptozotocin groupinduced by streptozotocin dose 7 mg/200gBB, glibenklamid group induced bystreptozotocin dose 7 mg/200gBB and treated with glibenklamid suspension dose0,27 mg/200gBB, doses group 1  and doses group 2 induced by streptozotocindose 7 mg/200gBB and treated with kudu laos traditional drink dose 1,9ml/200gBB and 3,8 ml/200gBB. All of the treatment last 28 days. After 28 daysof treatment with kudu laos traditional drink dose 1,9 ml/200gBB and 3,8ml/200gBB there is a decrease in blood glucose levels respectively 103,2 mg/dland 117,8 mg/dl and percent of the area demage islet of langerhans each of4,114% and 4,263%  that are significantly different (P>0,05) with streptozotocingroup. Abstract

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can bind with oxygen to destroys free radicals. Vitamin Ein tissues suppress oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids, which helps and maintain cell membranefunction. This research was aimed to find out the optimum formulation of lotion vitamin E andalso to determine the levels of vitamin E in lotion once it was made. The formula of lotion wasmade with series of five concentrations of vitamin E those are 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%. Theoptimum formula is chosen based on two physicochemical properties parameters, pH andviscosity. Analysis of data was performed using program R i386 3.1.1 package R-commander. Theresults showed that formula E (contained concentration 5%) was selected as the optimum formulawith spreading capacity of 6,97 cm; adhesive force 38,33 s; pH 7,38; and the viscosity 38,67 P.  Ccolumn was used in this research for HPLC condition. Validation result from the analysis methodused standard levels series displaying correlation coefficient (r) of 0,9973; relative standarddeviation (RSD) ≤ 16 %; percentage of recovery 92,16 %; limit of detection (LOD) 1,725 µg/mL;and limit of quantitation (LOQ) 5,752 μg/mL. Abstract

Abstract: Free radicals are one of the causes of the premature aging. free radicals can besuppressed by antioxidants. Carica papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the plants that potentiallyas a natural antioxidant. Ethanol extract of papaya leaves have IC 50 0.58 mg / ml, but not knownin cream. This study aims to determine the IC50 of the ethanol extract of papaya cream using DPPH(1,1-diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazil) method. The extraction was done by maceration using ethanol.Ethanol extract of papaya leaves were obtained is tested phytochemicals, qualitative test withDPPH and qualitative test of vitamin C with KMnO4. The results of phytochemical screening wereknown that contains alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, and phenolic. The results qualitative DPPHantioxidant activity and qualitative Vitamin C with KMnO4 showed have antioxidant activity andvitamin C. Ethanol extract prepared in cream. pH and particle size of cream were good. Creamingoccurs in formulas 4 and the most preferably cream is formula 1. Quantitative test of the ethanolextract of papaya cream using visible spectrophotometry.
