Abstract

Advertisements in the digital era creatively make use of writing, speech, images, and music to promote goods and services. This multimodality is used to persuade customers. Likewise, TV commercials have adopted multimodality for “a creatively communicative interaction” to support the goods and services advertised. Some studies on multimodality on media have been conducted but those on advertisements are still scarcely done, especially in Indonesia. Importantly, advertisements as sample of short functional texts belongs to curriculum aspects of the English subject for the students of the ninth grade in Indonesia (the Ministry of Education and Culture, 68, 2013). The TV commercials of “Axe” perfume product attracted the writer to conduct a research on multimodality. The English version of “Axe” TV commercials was chosen as the case under study. The analysis done indicated that “Axe” TV commercials contained a set of chronologically effective organization of multimodality which represented a set of creative sequence of the use of language, images and music to signify a persuasive, advertisement discourse attribute.

Abstract

This study examined the similarity and difference between Grice’s conversational principles and debate competition principles in the grand final of an East Java highshool debate competition. Most highschool debaters including the researcher perceived that there would be differences. Using the result of open-response questionnaires distributed to the adjudicator and 6 participants of the grand final of the competition, the researcher then inteviewed and discussed the debate transcript and the result of open-response questionnaires with some triangulators from the perspective of Grice’s conversational principles and competitive debate principles. The study reported that the maxims that are mostly interpreted differently in this debate are the violation of maxim of quantity and the observation of maxim of quality. This research finding also proved that the maxims that are mostly interpreted similarly in this debate are the violation of maxim of quality and the observation of maxim of quantity.

Abstract

It is important for EFL readers to realize that they use certain strategies when they find difficulties in reading comprehension. These strategies have to be explored and selected for training for better comprehension. This exploration administered the MARSI reading questionnaire to identify university students’ reading strategies and their frequency of use. The global and support strategies turned to be the strategies of the medium level of use whereas the problem-solving strategies were at the high level of use. An interesting finding is that there was enough familiarity with the global and support strategies. The high-level of frequency of the problem-solving strategies indicate that there were a lot of difficulties in reading comprehension and the problem-solving strategies are worth training. To be more convincing, these findings would have to be supported by think-aloud protocols in real reading.

Abstract

The study explored the correlation between vocabulary size and the three levels of reading comprehension namely literal, inferential, and critical reading comprehension. The main intention was to discover what the correlation was between vocabulary size and literal reading comprehension, inferential reading comprehension, and critical reading comprehension in terms of direction and magnitude. The subjects were 30 students of the English Department at a university in Surabaya. A Vocabulary Size Test and a Reading Comprehension Test were administered to measure the subjects' vocabulary size and reading comprehension performance. The findings revealed that vocabulary size was positively, strongly, and significantly correlated to literal reading comprehension, inferential reading comprehension and critical reading comprehension.

Abstract

The aim of this research is; (1) to know the ability of the students’ reading skills, and also to give and increase the students’ understanding in the reading text. ; 2) to know the difference of the students’ reading ability by repeating the reading text after their lecturer reads; 3) to know how far is the students non English to understand the English text by giving attention to the vocabulary of the texts to get the clear understanding. This research used descriptive qualitative researchthis research has done to get the clear information between one and the other, so the information from the source did not miss and change. Based on the data that has been collected through observation, interview, and documentation. Based on the research that has been done, it can be concluded that: (1) it has an improvement in students’ understanding the reading text; (2) there was also an interference from the team in teaching learning activies; 3) the non English students got a lot of vocabularies after doing this research.

Abstract

In English classes, teachers believe that vocabulary plays an important role in building students’ English skills. Unfortunately, they do not give much attention to how to teach vocabulary in an attractive and fun way by using games. Teachers seem to use the old fashioned way of teaching, by giving a word list and asking students to memorize it. This research explored the usage of game, The Pirates of Caribbean Game, in teaching vocabulary to students. Did students taught by using game get better score than those who were taught by word list? In answering this question, the researcher used quasi experimental research, pre-test and post-test given to the control and experimental groups. After giving the treatment for five times, the research finally showed there was no significant difference in using the word list and The Pirates of Caribbean game.

Abstract

The purpose of this research study is to analyze the types of cohesive devices, the frequency of each cohesive device used and to identify cohesive errors that the students committed in their cause - effect essay. There were 29 students’ essays analyzed.. The study revealed that there were four types of cohesive devices used by the students in their essay: Reference, Substitution, Conjunction and Lexical cohesion. In accordance with the frequency of cohesive device, reference had the highest frequency which is 45,38%, followed by Lexical Cohesion 39,33%, Conjunction 14,90%, and Substitution 0,37%. The types of reference: personal, demonstrative and comparative rerference; types of substitution is nominal substitution; types of conjunction: additive, adversative, causal and temporal conjunction, and lexical cohesion: reiteration (repetition, synonym, general word and antonym) and collocation (adjectives + nouns, noun + noun, and verb + preposition) . Dealing with the errors in cohesive devices, the most frequency of errors was reference with the percentage 55,85%, conjunction 16,48%, lexical cohesion 2,76%. The research study revealed that most of the students committed errors in accordance with the source of interlanguage errors and intralingual errors. Most of the students committed errors on pronoun shift refers to grammatical errors, misuse of plural and singular form of demonstrative pronoun, overuse of cohesive devices, run-on sentence, misuse of cohesive devices and overgeneralization in their cause effect essay. The results of this study can contribute some pedagogical implications for writing teachers and students. It is necessary for English teacher to teach cohesion and cohesive devices explicitly and provide them with ample examples in English classes.
