Abstract

The washback study is sorely necessary in the situation of the National Examination system, which selects candidates for the next level of education, due to its gatekeeping role in influencing test-takers' academic futures and supposedly life courses and in allocating power and instituting social order. This qualitative study explores the impact of the Indonesian national examination and how the washback interlinks students, teachers, and parents. The research aims to uncover (1) the objective of the national examination, (2) the washback impact of this high-stake test on students, teachers, and parents, (3) how teachers and parents perceived to be under pressure from the national examination while affecting the students as test-takers. This case study examined the three actors as stakeholders at play through the lens of the parents, teachers, and students as test-taker by conducting semi-structured interviews with teachers and parents and also focus group discussion with students. We probe their Indonesian National Examination experiences based on their beliefs and practices as individuals or professionals. The findings indicated that the objectives of the national examination for the participants were for determining not only the students’ future but also teachers and schools. It then led the participants to have high level of anxiety in facing the national examination. Their practices of teaching, learning and parents were heavily influenced by the national examination.

Abstract

This study addressed to investigate three main challenges experienced by visually impaired students in their academic pursuits: their perceptions toward themselves, adapting to prejudicial treatment, and utilizing technology as an assistive tool in learning. Ten (10) visually impaired students were selected as participants in this study, which employed a Narrative Inquiry approach. Data were gathered through a questionnaire, observations, and in-depth interviews. The findings indicated that a significant majority (97%) of visually impaired students held a positive perception of their condition, while a small minority (3%) had a negative perception. Furthermore, the majority (96%) reported not experiencing any prejudicial treatment in public spaces, and all participants (100%) expressed that Screen readers facilitated their learning. Furthermore, it is suggested that resilience is a crucial factor in the success of visually impaired students in higher education. The study provides practical and theoretical implications for educators, policymakers, and visually impaired students themselves, emphasizing the importance of promoting resilience and providing appropriate support for students with visual impairments. Abstract

The research intended to analyze English reading materials in terms of critical thinking skills aspect utilizing Cambridge Life Competencies Framework for critical thinking. This research employed a content analysis study in two coursebooks. The method used to gather the data were content analysis, library research, and need analysis. While, to analyze textual data and find the most appropriate data set, the researchers employed a color-coding technique for themes and ideas. This finding revealed that two English reading textbooks accommodated 8 of the 11 components of critical thinking skills according to the Cambridge Life Competencies Framework. The eight components fall into two main parts: comprehension and analysis of concepts and arguments and evaluation of ideas and claims. However, the three components of critical thinking skills which are in one core area, namely: solving problems and making decisions have not been accommodated in all English reading materials. Thus, the study recommends that the development of English reading materials in relation to critical thinking skills that refer to Cambridge Life Competencies framework needs to be carried out so that learners are capable of thinking clearly and logically about what they desire and what they feel is the best course of action for learning reading.   Keywords: Cambridge Life Competencies Framework, Critical Thinking Skills, English Reading Materials, Seventh Graders.

Abstract

In English Language Teaching, reflective practice is a significant pedagogical approach for teacher professional development. This study aims to find out the comprehension of six Professional EFL Teachers in West Java, Indonesia. The research addressed two research questions: (1) how the participants define reflective practice; and (2) how they practice their reflection. The researcher applied a case study using semi-structured interviews, observation and document analysis to collect the data, which then was analyzed thematically. The participants of this study were six professional English teachers who has passed the Teacher professional education program (PPG) and has been teaching more than 10 years. According to the findings, the participants view reflective practice as a method of evaluation and introspection which positively contribute to their professional development. The participants depend heavily on student feedback and peer observation as the primary technique for putting reflective practice into action. It leads to the notion that their comprehension of reflective practice is neither complete nor exhaustive. To improve their understanding of reflective practice, higher education can provide continuing assistance and direction to EFL teachers with mentorship programs, collaborative peer work, and training sessions in which experts in reflective practice guide them toward becoming reflective practitioners.
