Abstract

Based on 2013 Curriculum, Personal Letter can be considered as one of the challenging text types that should be mastered by the students. This might be the reason why the text is taught in Senior High School Level. Therefore, it is crucial for the teachers to expand their knowledge regarding this type of genre to overcome students’ problems faced during writing personal letter. This study is aimed to analyse student’s Personal Letter text based on three metafunctions in SFL perspective. It is expected that by identifying students’ problems, teachers can decide and design appropriate pedagogical plan. The data of this descriptive qualitative study were analysed by using three metafunctions in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). The result of the study reveals that the student’s major problems in producing Personal Letter text are the use of subject and verb tense (interpersonal metafunctions), the generic structure of the text, the use of conjunctions, the grammatical errors, and L1 interference.Keywords: personal letter; systemic functional linguistics; metafunction; discovery learning strategy.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the frequency of pragmatic content occurrence represented as speech acts of thanking and apologizing in two Indonesian ELT textbooks: a prescribed textbook published by Ministry of National Education and a commercial textbook. Pragmatic content of two ELT Textbooks entitled When English Rings the Bell and English on Sky were analyzed using Martinez’s Framework on Speech act of thanking and apologizing. The result indicated that a number of speech acts of thanking and apologizing have sufficiently provided by both prescribed and commercial textbook. However, while there are various strategies which can be used to perform speech acts of thanking and apologizing, both textbooks failed to take into account the inclusion of those strategies. It is therefore advisable for language teachers to employ other authentic language sources to enhance learners’ pragmatic competence.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the study of research abstracts and its rhetorical structure. While the number of studies in rhetorical moves of RA abstracts are growing, there is still little attention given to thesis and dissertation abstracts especially in relation to the link between genre knowledge and its rhetorical realization. The present study aims to identify the variations of rhetorical move manifestation in abstracts of master’s theses and dissertations written by local and international graduate lecturers and explore the relationship between the manifestations and the author’s genre knowledge development. This study employed a qualitative approach with Hyland’s (2000) five-move analysis model as the main framework of the study. The findings revealed that there were similarities in the rhetorical structure of abstracts by the local and international graduates. The study also found that educational level and supportive academic environment play an important role in author’s genre knowledge trajectories. The findings discovered in the study provide a clearer picture to help in the development of a universal guideline for abstract writing in final papers for higher education.

Abstract

The unprecedented changes in the education sector due to the recent pandemic demand teachers and students to adapt to new ways of learning via online platforms. A plethora of latest research has investigated various topics such as online learning platforms, online learning materials, and teacher/student perceptions; however, little is known about the link between online learning and achievement. Occupying this lacuna, this study specifically sought to examine the relationship between self-regulated learning (SRL), the digital learning environment, and student’ academic achievement during the pandemic.  The population of this research was 1,800 students (freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior class) enrolled for the Introduction to Management course at a state university in Bandung, Indonesia. Selected using a proportionate random sampling, 317 students participated as the respondents.  The data were collected through questionnaire surveys, while the Structural Equation Model (SEM) was employed to analyze the interrelationship among the construct variables.  The results of this study show that promoting SRL may affect the optimization of the digital learning environment and academic achievements.  Students with better self-regulated learning ability can somehow optimize their digital learning environment and be more progressive in terms of academic achievement.

Abstract

It is believed that traditional grammar is no longer appropriate to teach students especially in developing their writing skill. Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) which focuses on meaning and function behind language is now seen to be well-implemented. The study tried to analyse student’s piece of writing on one type of text in which Hotel Industry students as the sample of the study should master known as recount text. Purposive type of sampling was chosen since there was only one text analysed which was seen as the most problematic one. Content analysis as the implementation of qualitative research was chosen as the design of the study. The findings showed that the major problem student encountered mostly on grammatical structures in which there were found some errors on it. Regarding the three metafunctions, it was known that the students had been able to accomplish all criteria of recount text, such as using mostly material processes which deals with ideational metafunction, using correct tense and subject to fulfil the mood exists in interpersonal metafunction, and using reiteration and zigzag pattern as representation of textual metafunction. However, since there was problem to overcome, a strategy was proposed known as “POWER” which stands for Plan, Organise, Write, Edit, and Revise, which is hoped to help students developed a well-constructed text fulfilling all sine qua non attributes that recount text has.

Abstract

As a demand of English learning, eighth grade students need to be able to write a recount text about their personal experiences. For this reason, this study employs a qualitative case study research design to analyse students’ writing of recount text. The data were obtained by collecting students’ writing in two different classes of eight grade junior high school in Bandung, Indonesia during the even semester of academic year 2016/2017. The self-composed recount texts were selected based on different proficiency levels as suggested by the English teacher of the school. For the framework of the text analysis, this study draws on Systemic Functional Linguistic theory, and recount text. Meanwhile, content analysis was employed to explore the analysis of the writing. The results presented that majority of problems on the students’ writings consist of social function and language feature. In terms of language features, there were still several errors in spelling, punctuation and capitalization. In term of Interpersonal metafunction, errors usually occurred in the Finite as there was an overlap of past tense and present tense. As a result, it was found that most of the clauses were written in material process and it still lack of reference in the theme-rheme structure.

Abstract

The role of an appropriate writing of an abstract becomes significantly important as it acts not only as the representative of the whole content of the paper, but also helps journal reviewers to decide whether the article is deemed worthy to be published. While myriad research on rhetorical move analysis of research article abstracts has been conducted, an inadequate amount of them has probed onto rejected research article abstracts, specifically using a cross-disciplinary lens. This study aims to uncover the rhetorical organization and linguistic features of science and sngineering abstracts by utilizing Hyland’s (2000) rhetorical structure. The method of this research is used as the nature of this research rooted from discourse analysis. A total of eighteen rejected abstracts were retrieved from Indonesian Journal of Science and Technology (IJoST). The findings revealed that all of Hyland’s moves were found in both dataset where the move occurrences were identical to one another. However, significant differences existed in step occurrences, particularly in Step 4 of Move 1, Step 1*, 1, and 2 of Move 3, and Step 1 and 2 of Move 5. Engineering studies considered Introduction, Purpose, and Method as obligatory moves, while science studies viewed Purpose as a conventional move of the three. Pattern-wise, science applied two configurations, while engineering used three. Regarding the linguistic features, present tense and active voice were dominant across the disciplines. Furthemore, it was observed that the conventionality of abstract writing had not been properly performed in the rejected abstracts. This research is hoped to provide an insightful source on rejected research article abstracts to future researchers.

Abstract

Move analysis is a genre-based approach used to analyze academic writing and investigate the rhetorical pattern of the text such as academic paper, abstracts, thesis, etc. However, the analysis of rhetorical moves in the abstracts of lecturers’ final papers in different disciplines remains unexplored. The aim of this study is to identify and compare the rhetorical moves, steps, and linguistic features of the abstract of lecturers from four different disciplines. The researchers focused on the abstract of master theses and dissertations from each discipline. This study analyzed eight abstracts from English lecturers for the soft science field, Mathematic and Architectural lecturers for the hard science field in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. The Five Move Analysis by Hyland (2004) is used as the framework of this study. The findings showed that Move 1 - Introduction was the most common move in hard science abstracts, while in soft science, it was Move 4 - Product. Moreover, the most occur step in both fields was Step 2 of Move 1 – Making topic generalization and Step 1 of Move 5 – Deducing conclusion. For linguistics features, both of the fields mostly used active voice. While for the tense, hard science tended to use present tense, but soft science inclined to use past tense. The findings show that each field has different tendencies yet similarities in writing abstracts to highlight the essential things on each abstract.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the language features used by Indonesian food-vloggers of different genders as well as the functions of each feature in their utterances. Six Indonesian food-vloggers of different genders were selected as the data. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and differential language analysis to analyse the data. The results show that out of seven features, there were only six features that have classified as women and men’s language features used by both women and men food-vloggers; namely, lexical hedges (30 times in women utterances and 40 times in men utterances), followed by compliment (25 in women utterances and 15 times in men utterances), command and directives (13 times in women utterances and 14 times in men utterances), swear and taboo words (14 times in women utterances and 11 times in men utterances), question (11 times in women utterances and 9 times in men utterances), tag question (6 times in women utterances and 11 times in men utterances) and no minimal response feature is found. Regarding functions, the food-vloggers use hedging to damp down the statement force; say positive compliment to show satisfaction; give command and direct to make the interaction done properly; swear to show dissatisfaction; ask questions to make their viewers more involved in the interactions; use tag questions to confirm what the speakers have said. The findings show that males tend to be the dominant ones who applied the language features compared to the females’ food-vloggers. This may be due to the image of men in the society which is depicted as the masculine one, and to have masculine character means that they have to perform it. Therefore, these male food-vloggers make sure that their character as the food-vloggers could match with the viewers' expectations of how good vloggers should be, and one of the strategies is by communicating well enough with the viewers by using the language features. Abstract

Rhetorical move structure of soft and hard science research article introductions by novice Indonesian authorsResearch article introduction is crucial in justifying a research topic and presenting the significant contribution of a study to the advancement of knowledge. Prior studies have attempted to investigate research article introductions from various viewpoints. However, the way novice Indonesian authors rhetorically construct their introductions is still under-explored. This study aims to explore cross-disciplinary introductions with regard to rhetorical move structure and the linguistic realizations of the moves. Employing Swale’s (2004) revised CARS model, a corpus of 10 research articles from the fields of soft and hard science were analyzed. The findings revealed that the two disciplines were in agreement on the compulsory status of Move 1 Establishing a territory and Move 3 Presenting the present work and the conventional use of Move 2 Establishing a niche. However, discrepancies arose in the step level. Regarding the linguistic features, soft and hard science authors preferred using present tense and active voice in realizing the moves. In addition, a considerable number of metadiscourse such as hedges and boosters were observed in the introductions. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi bagian pendahuluan lintas disiplin berkaitan dengan struktur pola retorika pendahuluan dan realisasi linguistik dari pola tersebut. Menerapkan revisi model CARS oleh Swales (2004), sebuah korpus yang merupakan kumpulan 10 pendahuluan artikel penelitian dari disiplin ilmu soft dan hard science dianalisis. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kedua disiplin sepakat tentang status wajib dari Move 1 Establishing a territory dan Move 3 Presenting the present work, dan penggunaan konvensional Move 2 Establishing a niche. Namun, perbedaan muncul pada tiap tingkatan. Berkaitan dengan fitur linguistik, penulis soft dan hard science lebih memilih menggunakan kalimat aktif dan bentuk waktu masa kini (present tense) dalam merealisasikan pola. Selain itu, sejumlah besar metadiscourse seperti hedges dan boosters teramati dalam bagian pendahuluan. Studi ini menyimpulkan bahwa perbedaan fokus keilmuan penulis pemula Indonesia kemungkinan mempengaruhi kualitas pendahuluan mereka. Kata kunci: genre, pendahuluan, analisis pola, pemula, artikel penelitian
