Abstract

The research was conducted to determine the morphological characteristics, productivity andquality of Napier grass cultivars Taiwan, King and Mott harvested at 8 and 13 after planting. Effect ofcultivar and harvest arranged in a nested design (3x2). The variables were observed consisting ofmorphological characteristics, dry matter production and forage quality. The results showed that themorphological characteristics, leaf stem ratio, fiber content, crude protein content and in vitro dry matterdigestibility of Napier grass Taiwan and King cultivar were not different, but both morphologicalcharacteristics, fiber content was higher (P <0.05) compared to Mott cultivar, whereas leaf stem ratio,crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility Mott cultivar was higher (P <0.05) comparedto Taiwan and King cultivars. In general, an increase in plant height and fiber content at the age of 13weeks, whereas crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility decreased. It was concludedthat the highest dry matter production found in Taiwan and the King cultivars, whereas highest qualityfound in Mott cultivar. Dry matter production was highest harvested at 13 weeks, whereas the highestquality harvested at 8 weeks after planting for all cultivars tested.

Abstract

The 12S rRNA gene is one of unique regions in mitochondrial genome usually used for phylogenetic studies and species identification. The objective of present study was to develop species specific primers from mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene for identification of dog and rat in beef by using multiplex PCR assay. Three primer pairs of mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene specific for bovine, dog and rat were designed and selected to evaluate their specificity and fidelity. Moreover, a total of twelve DNA samples extracted from meat tissue were also prepared to test those primers using simplex and multiplex PCR. The PCR products were then visualized using 2% of agarose gel under the UV light and three of them were sequenced. In addition, sequence data were analyzed using Clustal Omega software and BLAST. The result showed that simplex PCR assay successfully amplified DNA targets which are respectively indicated by 155 bp (bovine), 244 bp (dog), and 491 bp (rat) of DNA bands. Furthermore, DNA sample sequences were identically similar to reference sequence used in this study. Multiplex and simplex PCR analyses also indicated that these primer pairs specifically amplified DNA target for each species in the samples containing various species. The results suggested that designed primers in this study could be used to identify dog and rat in raw beef containing these species meat. Further experiment should be conducted using meat-processed products and commercial meat products as samples.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out the effect and optimal percentage of adding Zn and Cuproteinat supplement product of fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the ration on internalquality of the broiler. The experiment used 125 broiler day old chicken with a Completely RandomizedDesign. The ration treatments were R0 (control), R1 (99% R0 + 1% supplement Zn and Cu proteinat), R2(98% R0 + 2% supplement Zn and Cu proteinat), R3 (97% R0 + 3% supplement Zn and Cu proteinat) andR4 (96% R0 + 4% supplement Zn and Cu proteinat) where each treatment was repeated five times andeach replication consisted of five broiler chicks. Variable analysis were body cut weight, carcasspercentage, liver relative weight, and the content of cholesterol broiler meat. Conclusion of the researchshowed that by using 3% of Zn and Cu proteinat supplement substrat in the ration gave the best internalquality of broiler, increased body cut weight, carcass percentage, otherwise liver relative weight and thecontent of cholesterol broiler meat were normal.

Abstract

The aims of study were to analyze (i) income of beef cattle farming, (ii) ability of farmers to meettheir obligation for returning credit, (iii) role of character, capacity, capital, collateral and conditions(5C) and its effect on credit return. The study was conducted using survey methods on farmers (fatteningand cow-calf operation), who use credit. Sample location was determined using two stage clusterrandom sampling based on beef cattle population, namely region of Grobogan, Blora, Rembang,Wonogiri and Boyolali. Number of respondents was 50 for fattening and 50 for cow-calf operation. Datawere analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistic, which consisted of scoring, income and multiplelinear regression. Results showed that income per-year of beef cattle fattening was greater than cow-calfoperation (IDR 8,954,208.00>1,606,786.00), as well as its contribution to the household farmers’income (49.45>14.91%). Credit return ability was 61.35% based on amount of credit IDR 22,482,510.Five-C analysis resulted that character and capacity of farmers were in adequate category, while capital,collateral and condition were IDR 14,932,500.00, IDR 58,740,000.00 and IDR 14,440,600.00. Capitaland collateral had significant effects, while character, capacity and condition had no significant effectson credit return.

Abstract

A study had been conducted to evaluate the performance of Islamic Boarding Schools (IBS) in developing the beef cattle agribusiness partnerships network in Central Java. This study involved 24 IBS with each IBS selected two respondents, namely one from internal (santri) and one from external (farmer community). Sample determination uses purposive sampling method. This study uses Gap Analysis by determining the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) value. Primary data were collected through direct observation and interviews with respondents. Secondary data was obtained from relevant government institutions. The results showed that the beef cattle agribusiness partnership network that was developed by IBS still did not satisfy for santries and farmer communities (CSI.s.total : 30.73% and CSI.f.total : 47.05%). It was concluded that farmer communities were very enthusiastic about establishing the beef cattle agribusiness partnerships with IBS; the santries needed additional livestock curriculums; IBS needed training and assistance from the other parties (government, private sector, etc.) in order to improve the ability to raise beef cattle and the ability to train, instruct and plan the beef cattle farming development in surrounding area. Increasing the ability of IBS automatically can increase the effectiveness of IBS role as an empowerment institution for surrounding community.

Abstract

Dairy cows often do not receive adequate nutrient supply during their lactation period. This condition caneven be worse if the environmental temperature is not in comfortable range which may occur especially intropical regions. The present research was aimed to simulate the effect of supplementary feeding on nutrientbalance of lactating dairy cow at contrasting temperature regimes using Cornell Net Carbohydrate andProtein System (CNCPS) model. Treatments consisted of feeds (R1: Pennisetum purpureum, R2: P.purpureum + concentrate (60:40), R3: P. purpureum + Gliricidia sepium + Leucaena leucocephala(60:20:20), R4: P. purpureum + concentrate + G. sepium + L. leucocephala (60:20:10:10)) and environmentaltemperatures (T1: 20 oC, T2: 30 oC). The dairy cow inputs in CNCPS were Holstein breed, body weight of500 kg, feed intake of 15 kg (dry matter basis) per day and produced milk 15 kg/day. Based on the CNCPSmodel, there were negative balances of metabolisable energy (ME) and metabolisable protein (MP) if alactating dairy cow fed only by P. purpureum. The ME balance was worse at higher temperature, while theMP balance was remain unchanged. Addition of concentrate mixture (R2) fulfilled the ME and MPrequirements as well as other nutrients. Addition of leguminous tree leaves (R3 and R4) improved thenutritional status of the lactating cow model compared to R1, but did not better than R2. It was concludedthat supplementary feeding is necessary for improving the nutrient balance of lactating dairy cow, especiallywhen the cow is maintained under uncomfortable environmental temperature.

Abstract

A study to evaluate the productivity of Boer and Kacang goats dam was carried out for 2 years atResearch Institute for Goat Production, Sungei Putih-North Sumatera. The materials used were goatsowned by the institute. The parameters observed were total birth and weaning weights of kid, litter size,parity of dam, pre-weaning mortality and kidding interval. The rate of reproduction and productivity ofthe dam were estimated using Amir and Knipscheer methods and were statistically analyzed usingGeneral Linear Model. The results showed that the total birth and weaning weight of Boer goats werehigher (P<0.05) than that of Kacang goats, while litter size of Boer goats were higher (P<0.05) than thatof Kacang goats. The pre-weaning mortality of Boer goat 15.1 ± 6.02% was lower than that ofKacang. The kidding interval of Boer goats was higher (P<0.05) than that of Kacang. Parity of dam hadsignificant effect on all production traits (P<0.05) except for pre-weaning mortality. Dam reproductionrate of Boer (1.81) was higher than that of Kacang (1.78), while productivity of Boer goat (37.12kg/head/year) was higher than that of Kacang (18.12). It can be concluded that the reproductivity ofBoer and Kacang goats were similar, however the productivity of Boer goat had better than Kacang.

Abstract

Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) is a common prebiotics used as a feed additives. The use of antibiotic can be replaced by MOS to reduce the number of pathogenic bacteria in small intestines of chickens. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of MOS extracted from copra meal on intestinal microbial population and blood profile of broiler chickens. The study was conducted by using 150 day-old male broiler chickens (average body weight 46.00 +  1.41 g). The design of this experiment was a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 dietary treatments, 5 replications and 10 birds in each replication. The dietary treatments consisted of control diet (corn-soybean meal diet without supplementation of antibiotic and prebiotic), control + 0.1% antibiotic bambermycin, and control + 0.035% MOS. For the first 4 weeks the birds were fed treatment diets, followed by commercial feed for 2 weeks. The parameters observed in this study were intestinal microbes population and blood profiles. The results showed that the administration of 0,035% MOS increased the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) number compared with antibiotics feed (P<0.05), but not significantly different (P >0.05) with the control group. The total aerobic and coliform bacteria were higher in MOS and antibiotic treatment compared than control group. The supplementation of 0.035% MOS from copra meal in diet increased the level of leucocytes which is important to immune response of broilers and its usage was safe because the level of chicken blood profile were within the normal range.
