Abstract

This study aimed  to describe the EFL teachers’ understanding and knowledge about CLT, their attitudes toward CLT and their difficulties and challenges in the implementation of CLT practices in the Indonesian context. This study first presents an overview of CLT approach, the definition and principles of CLT which is followed by a brief history of CLT, and a review of existing literature related to comunicative competence, as well as how it functions in CLT is presented. Then, this study examines the impact of ESP in CLT contexts. A qualitative method research design was used for this research. Participants for this study were 13 lecturers of English teaching in Engineering Faculty of YSU. The main modes of data collection consisted of  questionnaire, semi-structured  interviews and documentions. The data of this research was collected by: distributing questionnaire for all English lecturers which numbers are 13, who teach the English language in Engineering Faculty of YSU; conducting interviews with 5 of them (they were chosen based on their background major); collecting Engineering Faculty’s syllabus for English class, learning book, lesson plans and additional teaching book in ESP context which was used for teaching English due to the circumstances in the Engineering Faculty. The data of this research, questionnaire was analyzed by Normal Curve category analyze. And the qualitative data of this research was analyzed by data reduction, data displays and data verification. The results show that the respondents have good understanding and knowledge about CLT; they have positive attitudes toward CLT; however, they observe many difficulties and challenges in implementing CLT in their classrooms.

Abstract

There are three purposes of this research; first, to describe the textual function variations of foreign embassies’ press releases; second, to describe the contextual motivating factors of the textual function variations of foreign embassies’ press releases; and third, to describe the implications of the textual function variations of foreign embassies’ press releases for translation teaching. This research used quantitative and qualitative approaches. The result shows that the global overall textual function variation of the translational texts is very low which is represented by the mean of 1.25. In other words, the difference between Text 1 in Bahasa Indonesia (T1) and Text 2 in English (T2) is not significant. The contextual motivating factors of the textual function variations are analyzed from the translational texts’ mode and the clauses’ themes. The mode is written, realized through graphic channel therefore there is a high level of formality. The most occurring theme is subject which shows that the translators put emphasis heavily on the actor or the goal of the message in the clause. The most frequent pattern of thematic progression is repetition which efficiently constructs a communicative press release. The implications for translation teaching are these successful translational texts can be used in a more profitable manner as documentary sources for translation teaching.

Abstract

Developing English Learning Materials Integrated with Character Values for the Elementary School Students. The aim of this research study is to develop English learning materials integrated with character values for the elementary school students. This research is a research and development study. The development of  these product was carried out in  three phases, i.e.: (1) planning,  involving conducting need analysis and studying of literature; (2) developing the product, involving developing the course grid and developing the first draft of the product; (3) evaluating the product, involving expert validation, preliminary try-out, and main try-out. The result of this study shows that(1) the quality of the product, in terms the content, is in the very good category with the average score of 4.49 and 4 for the integrated character values, which means the quality is in the good category; (2) the quality of the product in terms’ media is in the good category, with the average score of 4; (3) the students’ responses toward the task and the aspect contributing the product at the preliminary try-out, the first validation, and the second validation showed 3.60 and 3.55, 3.47 and 3,54, and 3.40 and 3.43 for the mean score, all of which are in the very good category; (4) the teacher’s responses toward the Student Book and Workbook at the preliminary try-out, the first validation, and the second validation showed 3.24 and 3.13, 3.29 and 3.18, and 3.29 and 3.18 for the mean scores, all of which are in the very good category. This means the set of English learning materials is effective and appropriate to be used in the teaching and learning process for the elementary school students

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata dalam bahasa Indonesia pada siswa TK (Taman Kanak-kanak) dengan metode bermain peran (role play). Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa TK Masyitoh Kembangsongo II, Trimulyo, Jetis, Bantul, Hipotesis tindakan dalam penelitian ini ialah penggunaan metode bermain peran (role play) akan meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata dalam bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas dengan tiga siklus. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi, dokumentasi, dan catatan lapangan. Kriteria validitas data mencakup validitas demokratik, validitas proses, validitas hasil, validitas katalistik, dan validitas dialogik. Data dianalisis dengan deskriptif kualitatif dengan langkah-langkah mencermati dan menelaah data, reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa metode bermain peran (role play) dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata dalam bahasa Indonesia pada siswa. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari: (1) pengucapan kosakata semakin benar dan lancar dan (2) pemahaman dan penggunaan kosakata dalam bahasa Indonesia semakin baik dari siklus per siklus.Kata kunci: kosakata, metode bermain peran (role play) DEVELOPING INDONESIAN VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE STUDENTS OF KINDERGARTEN THROUGH THE ROLE PLAY METHODAbstractThis study aims to improve Indonesia vocabulary mastery of the students of kindergarten through the role play method. Action hipothesis in this research was using role play method would improve vocabulary mastery in Indonesian vocabulary,exactly students of TK Masyitoh Kembangsongo II, Trimulyo, Jetis, Bantul, Yogyakarta. This research was a classroom action research with three cycle. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The data validity criteria covered democratic validity, process validity, outcome validity, catalytic validity, and dialogic validity. The data were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive technique with the steps of data check and review, data reduction, data display, and conclution drawing. The results of the study showed that the role play method could be applied to improve Indonesian vocabulary mastery of the students of TK Masyitoh Kembansongo II, Trimulyo, Jetis, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The positive change were indicated  by the fact that: (1) the pronounciation was more right and fluent and (2) their understanding and using Indonesian vocabulary improve in each cycle.Keywords: vocabulary. role play method

Abstract

This study aimed to develop appropriate English learning materials for nursing students of Borneo University of Tarakan in learning English. This study was a Research and Development (R D) study. The steps of the study were conducting needs analysis, writing the course grid, developing the materials, getting validation and revising the materials, trying out the materials, evaluating the materials, and writing the final draft of the materials. In this study, the data were collected by using needs analysis questionnaire, materials evaluation questionnaire and an interview guideline.  Four units were developed in this study. Each unit consisted of 12 until 15 tasks that were organized into Lead-in, Lesson Proper, Homework, Evaluation, Reflection and Word Bank. The data analysis showed that the developed materials were appropriate. The range of the mean value was 3.12 to 3.64. Referring to the quantitative data conversion, the range was in the good category. The data also suggested that the appropriate learning materials for nursing students had some components: goals, input, procedures, setting, teacher roles and learners roles.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata siswa kelas VII B SMP Negeri 2 Labuhan Badas melalui teknik permainan. Penelitian ini terdiri dari tiga siklus dengan alur: penentuan masalah, perencanaan, tindakan dan observasi, dan refleksi. Data dikumpulkan melalui hasil tes kosakata, catatan lapangan, wawancara, dan foto. Data yang berupa nilai kosakata siswa dianalisis menggunakan program Excel. Data berupa catatan lapangan, wawancara dan foto dianalisis melalui tiga tahapan yakni: reduksi data, beberan (display) data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penguasaan kosakata siswa meningkat melalui teknik permainan. Siswa mampu mengetahui arti, bentuk dan penggunaan kata, serta termotivasi dalam mempelajari bahasa Inggris. Penyusunan materi kosakata membuat siswa lebih mudah mempelajari kosakata. Pembagian LKS dapat membantu memfasilitasi pembelajaran kosakata siswa. Kegiatan yang bervariasi membuat pembelajaran bahasa Inggris menjadi lebih menyenangkan. Peningkatan interaksi dan penggunaan bahasa Inggris di kelas mampu meningkatkan kemampuan siswa menggunakan bahasa Inggris. Pengelolaan kelas secara optimal membuat proses pembelajaran berlangsung dengan baik.Kata Kunci: kosakata, permainan IMPROVING THE VOCABULARY MASTERY OF THE VII B CLASS OF SMP THROUGH GAMES AbstractThe aim of this study was to improve the vocabulary mastery of the VII B class of SMP Negeri 2 labuhan Badas through games. This study was conducted in three cycles following the steps: problem identification, planning, action and observation, and reflection. The data were collected through the students’ vocabulary test score, field notes, interviews, and photos. The data of students’ vocabulary score were analyzed using the Excel program. The field notes, interviews and photos were analyzed through three stages namely: data reduction, display data, and conclusion drawing. The results show that students' vocabulary improves through game techniques. The students are able to know the meaning, the form, the use of  the words, and are motivated to learn English. The organization of the vocabulary material makes the students more easily learn the vocabulary. The worksheets could help facilitate the students' vocabulary learning. Various activities make English learning more fun. The interaction improvement and use of English in the classroom are able to improve the students’ ability in using English. The optimalization of classroom management could make the learning process runs well.Keywords: vocabulary, games

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mengidentifikasi makna sosiokultural buku The Invisible Mirror, (2) menganalisis tingkat kesepadanan makna sosiokultural buku tersebut melalui kajian teoretis studi penerjemahan, (3) mencermati strategi penerjemahan yang digunakan di dalam buku tersebut bagian pertunjukan wayang tradisi lakon Lubdaka dari bahasa Bali ke dalam bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris, dan (4) membandingkan ideologi penerjemahan yang mendominasi penerjemahan dari bahasa Bali ke bahasa Indonesia dengan ideologi penerjemahan dari bahasa Bali ke bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang didukung dengan data kuantitatif. Subjek penelitian yakni buku The Invisible Mirror, Siwaratrikalpa: Balinese literature in performance. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah teknik baca, simak, catat (BSC) dan teknik triangulasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keseluruhan makna-makna budaya yang teridentifikasi, wujud makna budaya sociofact dan mantifact paling sulit diatasi kesenjangan makna budayanya dibandingkan dengan wujud budaya artifact di T2 dan T3. Strategi penerjemahan yang mendominasi di T2 adalah transposisi 55,6%. Sedangkan terjemahan dari bahasa Bali ke dalam bahasa Inggris (T3) menunjukkan bahwa strategi penerjemahan yang paling banyak muncul yakni transposisi 58,8%. Hasil analisis data ideologi penerjemahan menunjukkan bahwa penerjemah cenderung menggunakan ideologi foreignisasi yakni sebanyak 61,1% di T2 dan 52,3% di T3. Dengan demikian penerjemah di T2 dan T3 berusaha untuk mempertahankan atmosfir dan cita rasa kultural Bali.Kata Kunci: kesepadanan makna, sosiokultural, analisis komponen makna, strategi penerjemahan, ideologi penerjemahan THE SOCIO-CULTURAL MEANING EQUIVALENCE ON LUBDAKA’S PLAY TRANSLATION IN THE INVISIBLE MIRROR BOOK AbstractThis study aims to: (1) identify the socio-cultural meaning of The Invisible Mirror book, (2) analyze the socio-cultural meaning equivalence degree of the book through theoretical translation studies, (3) observe the translation strategies used in the book on Lubdaka’s traditional puppet play from Balinese language into Indonesian and English, and (4) compare the ideology that dominates the translations from Balinese language into Indonesian and Balinese language into English. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and supported by quantitative data. The research subject is The Invisible Mirror book: Balinese literature in performance. The BSC data collection techniques meaning to read, observe, and note techniques were used in this study along with the triangulation technique. The data were analyzed using the intralingual equivalent methods by linking and comparing elements lingually contained in one language or in several different languages. The results showed that meanings identified, the cultural meaning forms of sociofact and mantifact are the most difficult to address the cultural meaning gaps compared to the artifact at T2 (Indonesia) and T3 (English). The translation strategies that dominate the T2 (bahasa Indonesia) are transposition at 55.6%. While the translation from Balinese into English T3 shows that the most frequent translation strategy used is transposition at 58.8%. The result of the analysis of the translation ideology shows that the translators tend to use foreignization ideology as much as 61.1% in bahasa Indonesia (T2) and 52.3% in English language (T3).Keywords: meaning equivalence, socio-cultural, componential analysis, translating strategy, translation ideology

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan (1) jenis penggunaan alih kode yang terjadi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, dan (2) faktor yang melatarbelakangi terjadinya penggunaan alih kode dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di MA Mu’allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah 2 orang guru dan 175 siswa kelas X. Objek dalam penelitian ini adalah tuturan penggunaan alih kode yang meliputi  jenis alih kode dan faktor yang melatarbelakangi terjadinya penggunaan alih kode dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di MA Mu’allimat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penggunaaan alih kode dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di MA Mu’allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta terjadi sejumlah 166 data. Selanjutnya, seluruh data terbagi dalam 2 jenis alih kode, yaitu; (1) intra-sentential code switching terjadi sejumlah 61 data (37%), dan (2) inter-sentential code switching terjadi sejumlah 105 data (63%). Berikutnya, faktor yang melatarbelakangi terjadinya penggunaan alih kode dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris terdiri dari 2 faktor, yaitu faktor linguistik dan faktor non-linguistik. Faktor yang paling dominan melatarbelakangi terjadinya alih kode adalah faktor linguistik dari segi kurangnya penguasaan bahasa Inggris yang dimiliki oleh siswa.Kata kunci: alih kode, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris THE USE OF CODE SWITCHING IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING AT MA MU’ALLIMAAT MUHAMMADIYAH YOGYAKARTA. AbstractThis research aims to describe: (1) the types of code switching in English language learning, and (2) the background factors in using code switching in English language learning  at MA Mu’allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. This research was descriptive-qualitative. The subjects were 2 English teachers and 175 students of X grade. The objects were the utterances of code switching which include the types of code switching and the background factors in using code switching in English language learning at MA Mu’allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. The result of the research shows that the use of code switching in English language learning at MA Mu’allimaat Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta is 166 data. All data are divided into 2 types of code switching. They are as follows: (1) intra-sentential code switching is 61 data (37%) and (2) inter-sentential code switching is 105 data (63%). Next, the background factors in using code switching in English language learning are linguistic and non-linguistic factors. The dominant background factor in using code switching in English language learning is the linguistic factor in the lack of student capability in English.Keyword: code switching,  English language learning
