Abstract

The development of tourism sector is closely related to the improvement of hotel and restaurant industry. Its contributions to PDRB, employment, and the increasing business entity show that the economic activity in this sector remains high and becomes superior in Bandung city. Nevertheless, the problem existed is related with the mismatch between the competence owned by the human resource and the industry requirement. The aim of the study are (1) developing strategy to improve the human resource competence in hotel and restaurant sector based on gap analysis between the required human resource competence profile and provided human resource competence profile.(2) Mapping and analyzing the role of ‘triple helix’ system (industry, government, and academician) in constructing human resource competence development model. The result of the study in front office, housekeeping, waiter, and cook show that the competence owned have not fulfilled the SKKNI standard in Hotel and Restaurant. Strategies proposed by this study are: (1) Improving training institution capacity. (2) Developing human resource competence through training and (3) Developing human resource through certification and standardization. Developing human resource competence is determined by three factors: industry, government policy, and education institution. Mapping and analyzing the role of ‘triple helix’ system (industry, government, and academician) will develop human resource competence development model in hotel and restaurant sector

Abstract

Tourism crises are becoming increasingly common, triggered by events within and outside the industry. Understanding the crisis process and managing it effectively are thus important issues for those involved in tourism. Vietnam confronted one such crisis in 2003 when the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus, which affected a number of countries in the region, was discovered in Hanoi. Fears of the disease led to a sudden fall in tourist arrivals and prompted a response from the industry in the areas of health and safety, finance, human resources and marketing. Management of the crisis appeared generally successful, although recovery was aided by wider developments. Information obtained from interviews with industry representative is presented and a crisis management campaign model is proposed to help assist in future crises which seem inevitable in the modern world.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to examine the extent to which the relationship between the internal service quality (ISQ) and employee satisfaction in a Vietnamese food and beverage service company. Based on the previous studies of Heskett et al, (1997) and Heinhuis et al. (1998), seven sub-measurements of ISQ and three sub-measurements of employee satisfaction are applied in the study. In addition, employee background as personal characteristics is also examined in the relation to employee satisfaction whilst cultural variables are held constant. This formal and descriptive correlational study analyzes data from questionnaire and interview. The results show that there is no significant correlation between employee background (age, education qualification, and length of employment) and employee satisfaction. On the other hand, there is significant correlation between internal service quality and employee satisfaction. Technology job fit, delivering service value, customer response, and supervisory control system are the most important measurements of ISQ, which influence the employee satisfaction.

Abstract

With globalization and spread of Internet the world is becoming a big mart with consumers shopping for best value of money across political boundaries. This is opening a global customer base for the product and service providers. Developing countries too are using this opportunity to create their own competitive advantages. Information Technology sector is already witnessing the power of competitive and differential advantage of developing nations and healthcare is emerging as another potential area. The health services at reasonable prices - at least in comparison to the developed countries, are attracting large number of people from across the globe to a few select destinations. Globally this market is estimated to be to the tune of US$ 40 billion growing at the rate of 15 per cent per annum. India is the new entrant in the field that has seen an upward trend in attracting the foreign tourists for medical purposes in the recent years and is counted among potential frontrunners. While on the one hand its medical tourism is lauded for its revenue generation and service excellence capabilities, on the other hand doubts are also being raised about a number of related issues pertaining to real advantages to patients as well as service providers. This paper makes an assessment of the existing trends, infrastructure required for medical tourism and evaluation of the advantages that India possesses besides taking stock of the trends in medical tourism at the global level.

Urban landscape, as an important impact factor on the quality of urban life, has been paid much attention to by citizens, governments and construction enterprises. Meanwhile, the issue that many cities follow some similar international styles degrades local customs and regional features. This trend should be pertinently analyzed and answered by researchers. Urban landscape comprises some spots and regions and is a dynamic system. Based on the current situation and academic proceedings, this research puts forward the concept of urban landscape network. By a case study of Hangzhou City construction, this paper conducts a grid analysis of the landscape grid network, and builds four sub-networks: natural scenery, historical development, road transportation, and land use. Using variance analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, this paper examines the relationship between the four networks, and finally achieves a regression equation of the landscape network in accordance with the subjective satisfaction evaluation concerning the landscape.

Y Seita, 1999). Since Malaysia is one of the signatories of the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and ASEAN Framework Agreement on Services (AFAS) which provides equal investment opportunities to foreign investors as domestic service providers including ecotourism, this article explores the legal issues that arise in the globalization of ecotourism.

Abstract

The current tourism business model, which is visitor-centered, shows how tourism has strong negative impacts to the host and the place. It happens in many places in the world where tourism business is run by outsiders or with outside capital, and creating conflict with local population. Political tourism is an alternative to the current business model because it looks at the business from the other side: the host-place-centered. Political tourism can be seen as the first step in “indigenizing” capitalism based on local values. The proposed model addresses subsystems in tourism business components, i.e. the transaction, transfer, and treatment systems. It suggests several strategies to make political tourism happen with reference to Native Hawaiians tourism development. It offers some lessons that can be applicable to other places in Asia and the Pacific.

Abstract

Visual quality is very important as observer’s first response to his/her surrounding to the ecotourism site. This factor should be stressed for eco-tourism sites such as wetland. An ecofriendly design of eco-tourism accommodations that harmonize and compatible to natural surrounding could increase the tourist interest to the place itself. A study was conducted in Paya Indah Wetlands aimed at assessing visual quality and perception of the eco-tourism accommodations using expert judgment technique. This study used selected photographs of the accommodation elements in Paya Indah Wetlands representing different types of buildings, park furnitures, parking features, pedestrian facilities, drainage and signages. The scoring scheme for visual quality and landscape features was valued using the six basic design elements, namely, form, line, colour, texture, shape and space. Data were gathered from 100 experts using a structured questionnaire with surrogated photos, distributed equally among landscape architects and architects. The results revealed that the visual quality of Paya Indah Wetlands accommodations were categorized as moderate in quality and some of the elements were considered as of poor quality. From the results, visual quality of the eco-tourism accommodations should be taken into consideration at the early stage in the development process to lend a higher visual quality to the wetland landscape of Paya Indah Wetlands.
