Abstract

A study on bird species identification at Lembah Harau Nature Reserve, West Sumatra has been conducted from April to May 2012. This study aimed to record bird species by direct observation along road and it’s tributaries. We identified all species and put them into MacKinnon list to predict a total number of species existed in the area. This study found 50 birds species lived in the nature reserve those belong to 24 families and 9 orders. The most abundant was Passeriformes that consist of 36 species and 15 families. Keywords : avifauna, nature reserve, Harau Valley, West Sumatra

Abstract

The screening and characterization of amylo-thermophylic bacteria that produced amylase from Semurup hot spring in Kerinci, Jambi was conducted from May to July 2012. The aim of this study was to find out the isolate of amylo-thermophylic bacteria and to analyze amylase activities. This study used experimental methods. This study found 31 isolates of amylo-thermophylic bacteria with the amylolytic index more than 2. The isolate SII- 1.7 has the highest enzyme activity. The form of colony was circular margin, smooth shiny surface and pigmentation cream. The bacterium was gram negative, bacilli cell, positive catalase, non-motile, and has proteolytic and amylolytic activities. Keywords: amylolytic, bacterium, characterization, hot spring, thermophylic

Abstract

A study on Anuran’s community (Amphibia) living in three types of wetland habitats ( i.e: rivers, lakes, and swamp forest) at Harapan Rainforest Jambi was conducted from October 2011 to January 2012 by using Encounter Visual Survey along six belt transects. This study found 115 individuals of Anura’s, which belong to 14 species, eight genera, and three families. Density of each species was different between the three wetland habitats. The highest density in the rivers was Limnonectes paramacrodon (6.66 ind/ha), in the lakes was Occydozyga sumatrana (16.87 ind/ha), and in the swamp forest was Limnonectes paramacrodon (5 ind/ha). Diversity index of Shannon Wiener indicated that species diversity was different between lakes, rivers, and swamp forest (rivers: 1.227, lakes: 1.594, and swamp forest: 1.154). The highest similarity index was found between rivers and lakes (42.86%), and the lowest between swamp forest and lakes (16.67%). Distribution patterns of most Anuran’s species based on Quadrat Variance Analysis were clumped. Keywords: anura, community structure, distribution pattern, wetland habitat

Abstract

A study on isolation and characterization of thermoproteolytic bacteria from hot springs at Sungai Medang, Sungai Penuh, Jambi was conducted from March to June 2012 using a descriptive method. Seventy thermophylic bacteria were isolated from the hot springs. A Total of 39 thermoproteolytic bacteria 39 were identified. The highest enzymatic activity (13.59 U/ml) was shown by isolate MI2.3 from a location at which the temperature was 600C. The isolate MI2.3 was characterized as an aerobic thermoalkaliphylic (optimum temperature of 500C, optimum pH of 9.0) bacterium with the ability to produce amylase but neither lipase nor cellulase. Keywords : alkaliphylic, bacterium, enzymatic activity, proteolytic, thermophylic.

Abstract

A study on screening and characterization odf cellulolytic thermophylic bacteria from Sungai Medang hot spring was conducted on May to June 2012 using purposive sampling methods. This study aimed to find a cellulolytic thermophylic bacterium and to analyze its cellulolyties. Twenty eight cellulolytic thermophylic bacteria were isolated from Sungai Medang hot springs. The highest enzymatic activity (amylolytic and proteolytic activity) was shown by isolate MII2.1 from a location at which the temperature was 78oC. This isolate was characterized as an aerobic bacterium, gram negative and non motile. The form of colony was a circular margin, smooth shiny surface and elevation flat. Keywords: amylolytic, bacterium, cellulolytic, proteolytic, thermophylic

Abstract

An inventarisation of the Anuran species (Amphibia) at Harapan Rainforest, Jambi has been done from October 2011 to July 2012. We collected 127 samples from the field and made identification based on morphological characteristics. We identified 19 sepcies in which belong to five families i.e. Bufonidae (Phrynoidis asper Gravenhorst., Ingerophrynus parvus Boulenger., I. divergens Peters. and Pelophryne signata Boulenger.), Microhylidae (Kalophrynus pleurostigma Tschudi.), Dicroglossidae (Occidozyga sumatrana Peters., Fejervarya cancrivora Gravenhorst., F. limnocharis Boie., Limnonectes paramacrodon Boulenger., L. malesianus Kiew.), Ranidae (Hylarana erythraea Schlegel., H. parvaccola Peters., H. glandulosa Boulenger., H. nicobariensis Stolizka., H. baramica Boettger., H. siberu Mc.Cathy and Whitten., Odorana hosii Boulenger., Rana sp), Rhacoporidae (Polypedates leucomystac Boulenger.).Keywords: Amphibia, Anura, Identification key, Harapan Rainforest

Abstract

The morphological analysis of Puntius binotatus Valenciennes 1842 (Pisces: Cyprinidae) collected from several locations in West Sumatra has been conducted from April to June 2012. Several morphological characters were measured and analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and UPGMA. This study found significant morphological variations of the standard length (SL), head length (HL), least depth of caudal peduncle (HCPD), length of caudal peduncle (LCPD), eye diameter (ED), caudal fin length (CFL), caudal fin length up (CFL up), caudal fin length bottom (CFL bottom), length of maxillary barbels (LMB) and length of snout barbels (LSB). Those variations were more likely influenced by elevations and western-eastern side of Barisan Mountain in Sumatra. Keywords: Barisan Mountain, cyprinidae, morphological characters, P. binotatus

The objectives of this research were: to determine species composition, structure and diversity index of species. The method of this research was quadratic method with line 1 m x 1 m. The results were found 22 families, 43 species and 624 individuals. The highest importance value was dominated by Gleichenia linearis (29.7%) at Jati Emas Stand and Melastoma malabathricum (38.19%) at Jati Putih Stand. Diversity index (H’) had value were 2.88, 2.81, 2.46 and it’s categorizhed as middle diversity. The higher simillarity index was found between Jati Emas and Jati Putih stand (40.74%), next between Jati Emas and without Jati stand (24%) was found as middle simillarity index and the lower similliarity index was found between Jati Putih and without Jati stand (13.04%).Keywords: Understory, Tectona grandis, Gmelina arborea
