Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the utilization of assessment rubric for students of first semester English Department Udayana University. This is a class action research (CAR) applied to find out how is the implication of assessment rubric related to the syllabus design implemented in the class. The assessment rubric functions as useful tools to portrait the progress of the students` mastery in: pronunciation, fluency, use of vocabulary, and grammar (Harmer, 2008: 388-390). The analytic score of the students related to the topic should be achieved in a half a semester can give the teacher input in the evaluation of the progress; or whether the teacher should modified or not her/his syllabus according to the condition of the class as well the goals of the teacher. In conclusion assessment rubric is very useful for teacher to find out the progress of students` achievement and the how far the goals of the teacher within the subject can be reached at certain stages during teaching and learning process in class.

Abstract

This paper aims at analyzing and describing the English compound specifically the English noun compound.  Compound is a combination of two or more words of which meaning cannot always be predicted from the meaning of each part. In English, words, especially adjectives and nouns, are combined into compound structures in a variety of ways. This article attempts to discuss the formal characteristics and types of the English noun compound. The theory of compound was adopted for further analysis. The finding shows that the formal characteristics of  the English noun compound are:  the noun compounds  have primary stress on the first constituent, the  semantic unity of a noun compound is reflected in an orthographic, the meaning of the noun compound cannot be predicted from  the meaning of the parts. The orthographic characteristics can be solid, hyphenated, and open. The types involved are Subject and Verb, Verb and Object, verb and adverbial, verb-less, subject and complement, combining-form and Bahuvrihi

Abstract

Motivation, which is the drive to do something is considered to be very important in any learning, including language learning. It is the want of someone to do something. Someone with lack of motivation will never be successful in doing things. This idea leads to the situation that a language teacher should also be able to keep the students’ motivation high. It is the reSponsibility of the teachers to keep the motivation through their behavior towards the students, through their attitude while applying the methods of Engage, Study, Activate (ESA). It cannot be expected that all institutions all over the world are able to provide sophisticated teaching aid, however with good teachers who are capable of motivating students or keeping their already existing motivation high, successful learning can be achieved.

Abstract

The full-reduplication Balinese verbs are used in everyday life, therefore they can be found in every text using Balinese. This article aims at describing the meaning of the reduplication form, such as : kituk-kituk,lier-lier. The data was taken from Balinese newspaper and analyzed by Metalanguage theory. The result showed that the reduplicated forms might mean (a) giving more emphasis, e.g.anggut-anggut,(b) done more than once, e.g. kauk-kauk ; (c) creating  new meaning since the root (the single form) does not exist in Balinese, e.g. sidapà sidap-sidap. Metalanguage manages to coherently and  systematically reveal each meaning respectively.

Abstract

From the viewpoint of sociolinguistics, marriage is one of the crucial events that may affect the development of language use. Comprehending the actual application of Japanese and Balinese culture in marriage would need a significant overview on several factors that emphasize the characteristics. In Japanese culture, the actual characteristics may be seen through their attire, equipments, and common practices. While in Balinese culture, characteristics may be seen through their appearance, instrument, and process. Implication in the result is best seen through the child that gives several changes in daily language use and usual habit or even manners.

Abstract

This research concerns with causative construction in Indonesian language.  The analyses of causative construction of Indonesian language based on the parameter of morphosyntax and semantics as proposed by Comrie (1989).The objectives of this research are to identify the causative types of Indonesian language. The result of the analyses shows that based on morphosyntax parameter the causative types in Indonesian language are (1) analytical causative, (2) morphological causative, (3) resultative causative, and (4) lexical causative.  Based on semantic parameter causative types in Indonesian language are differentiated into two features, (1) the controlling level accepted by causee, and (2) the closeness of relationship between cause and effect components.

Abstract

Major emphasis with respect to the studies of metonymy is mainly on lexical metonymy. This paper builds on Jandas studies and presents a case study with the aim to investigate metonymic relationship in Indonesian prefixal derivation. The database comprises 85 classification types consisting of a unique combination of metonymy, word class, and a prefix. The range of metonymy and word class patterns across prefixes is explored. It is shown that one metonymy and word class pattern can be encoded by more than one prefix. This study also demonstrates that on average prefixes are relatively not specific in terms of metonymy and word class patterns they signal. A number of metonymy patterns exhibit bi-directionality such as ACTION FOR AGENT (beli ? pembeli) and AGENT FOR ACTION (supir ? menyupir) but most patterns are uni-directional.

Abstract

Translation of subtitles commonly involves reductions due to certain reasons, therefore, it becomes interesting to be analyzed. This study is aimed at finding out the reductions of the translation of the English film subtitles ‘Lilo and Stitch’ into Indonesian, classifying the reductions into the subtitle strategies and analyzing the factors that causes the reduction. The data in this study are the transcriptions of English film subtitles and the Indonesian translation which were downloaded from the internet. The data were analyzed by using the theory of reductions and subtitle strategies by Gottlieb (1992), and also the theory from Rosa (2001) related to the factors causing the reductions in translating film subtitles. The findings and analysis show that there are 135 reductions in which 34 reductions belong to condensation strategy, 30 reductions belong to decimation strategy, and 71 reductions belong to deletion strategy. Two factors that cause the reductions in condensation and decimation strategies are the selection criteria characteristics of subtitling and the consequence of the secondary or marginal function of subtitles. The factor that causes reductions in deletion strategy is the change of spoken register to the written register, in which the unnecessary spoken features in English are omitted in Indonesian.

Abstract

This research was conducted based on the goal for finding and analyzing the emergence of interference or integration in the English text arranged by student whose native language is Bahasa. The interference was found in the field of syntax, with some mistakes in picking the word with correct word category, such as mistakenly replaced noun by verb, adjective by noun, noun by verb, and noun by adjective.  These all mistakes were all perceived as the interference of Indonesian as native language, since in Indonesian, the distinction between words in different categories or class is less-likely unseen. Besides, semantically, the lexical choice of the students in their arrangements was also observed. The dictionary meaning was chosen by the student and less-aware to the contextual meaning. The last one was the copula issue, that is about the relationship between subject and its to BE, where the students did mistakes in mistakenly put the BE, that is in Indonesian is commonly omitted.  Based on the analysis, it was found that the interference was frequently found and unavoidably committed by the students in their English use.  Therefore, expectantly this study may become the preliminary study that leads to the further intelligent tactic from the overall parties of people, linguists and the learners in responding and maintaining this phenomenon faced by the foreign language learners or Indonesian.
