Abstract

The research is an inquiry to understand the socio-cultural interaction between the native Yogyanese and the incomers within multiculturalism. The focus of the study is the perception of the incomers toward Yogyakarta and Yogyanese. Considering pluralistic and multicultural Yogyakarta’s society is predominantly Muslim, the research explicitly detects the perception of non-Muslim incomers (pendatang), particularly Christians. The result of the study exposes the complexity of interaction between the natives and the incomers. The mood celebrates diversity, acceptance, cordial relationship, tension, and distance. The pressure might occur through the cultural contrast of Javanese and non-Javanese and the social, cultural, religious, and political dynamics at the local and national levels. However, the dynamic is an ongoing socio-cultural negotiation that attempts to befit the best molding.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perspective of three Indonesian Muslim students at Monash University concerning the availability of Religious Centre which facilitates some aspects of students’ spiritual inquiry. This study deals with the primary data through observation and semi-structured interviews as qualitative research. This research reveals that Religious Centre has a significant role in fulfilling students’ spiritual needs, including the prayer room for Muslim students, and also fosters students’ tolerance by putting prayer rooms for all religions in the same building. The university students found that Religious Centre is significant in preserving their religiosity and relieving them to perform prayers inside the campus. Likewise, it has eased students in managing academic challenges. In addition, this study found that Religious Centre has contributed to maintaining the religiosity of three Indonesian Muslim students: helping them cheering educational challenges and controlling their academic stresses.

Abstract

This article attempts to look at great potential of pesantren as the oldest Islamic religious institution in Indonesia. This research analyzes the three primary assets owned by pesantren (human capital, social capital, and intellectual capital) to become agents of inter-religious harmony. It is based on field research conducted in two Islamic boarding schools with great attention to issues of inter-religious harmony, namely the Aswaja Nusantara Islamic Boarding School, Mlangi, Yogyakarta, managed by Kiai Muhammad Mustafid and the Roudhatus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School, Demak, managed by KH. Abdul Qodir, Lc. The primary data sources of this study were taken from interviews with the leaders and notes from Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with representatives of students. Based on the SWOT analysis of the collected data, this study concludes that Pesantren has excellent potential to become an agent of inter-religious harmony because of its social and intellectual capital and the diverse backgrounds of its students. However, this still requires pesantrens to conduct collaborative-comprehensive efforts to maximize their potential.

Abstract

As a national agenda for development, democracy needs to be developed and deepened by both the Indonesian state and society to achieve a just and prosperous country. Within this framework, faith-inspired civil society organizations are expected to promote equality before the law and observe humanistic, pluralistic and tolerant religious social life. This study employs the theory of Bourdieu’s Habitus, Gellner’s Typology of Social Organization and Kymlicka’s Multicultural Citizenship. It also engages other sociological theories, namely the social capital theory of civic community from Putnam, Coleman, Uphof, and religion-state relations theory from Bolland, Menchik, and Hassan. This study is qualitative with a multidisciplinary approach derived from Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, and History. Research findings suggestthe following: (1) The imbalance of bonding and bridging social capital has tended to result in hegemonic relations among faith-inspired civil society that to some extent excludes equal participation of ‘the others’; (2) The social capital of civil society organizations is highly nuanced and formed based on differences in religious and political orientations, which are the resultant interpretation and understanding of the Sacred texts and its religious culture; (3) Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah and Persatuan Tarbiyah Indonesia with moderate religious orientations (wasatiyah) have contributed positively to social capital that is persistent and consistent with democracy, while Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) and Front Pembela Islam (FPI) and to a lesser extent Gereja Masehi Injili di Minahasa (GMIM) with religious fundamentalist outlook tend to have an imbalanced social capital, which is resistant toward the so-called “Pancasila democracy”.

Abstract

The idea of producing religious science is known not only in Iran and the Islamic world but also in the Western world. This idea has created movements in the Western world and the Islamic world in the field of science production, which are mainly divided into three perspectives. In the sources of science production, a group has given originality to naqlī (narrative) knowledge, a group to human knowledge and experimental sciences, and the third group confirmed both views and considered the way to acquire knowledge to be both intellect and narration. Abdulkarim Soroush is among those who have given originality to experimental sciences and knowledge in this field. In this article, an attempt is made to explain the nature of religious science with a descriptive-analytical method, examine and explain Soroush’s point of view, and state his bases and arguments in explaining this theory, and finally to criticize his point of view. Confusion of the two authorities of demonstration and confirmation, failure to provide a criterion for judging between religion and human knowledge in times of conflict, and the invalidity of generalizing historical evidence to all ages are some of the things that undermine the acceptance of Soroush’s theory.

Abstract

This article examines the genetics of Islam in Indonesia, namely Javanese Islam. Through the lens of cross-cultural theology, this research aims to observe the dialogue and interaction between Hindu tradition and culture and Islamic religious practices and behaviors. Employing anthropological and sociological approach with an intensive library research method, this research found out that the style and behavior of Javanese Islam have resulted from the dialogue, interaction, negotiation, and synergy with Hindu (local) culture and traditions. The result also shows that Islam can harmonize and synergize its teachings with the local culture while maintaining its values or doctrines. Hence, Javanese Islam is better called Local Islam or Islam Nusantara rather than Syncretic Islam.

Abstract

Building a culture of tolerance and interreligious dialogue is one of the important agendas for creating religious harmony in various contexts. This study analyzes the concept of religious education and conflict resolution initiated by Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia Lab School in building a culture of tolerance and interfaith dialogue among Muslim and non-Muslim students. UPI Lab School is an educational institution with diverse students from different religious backgrounds. This research used a qualitative approach and descriptive case study method by collecting data through interviews, observation, and documentation. The data analysis employed the Miles and Huberman procedure framework through three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result showed several findings: 1) the internalization of religious moderation is manifested in the school’s curriculum and learning process, 2) the learning model is based on freedom and non-coercion and builds a moderate and dynamic discussion space, 3) the school carries out conflict resolution and inter-religious dialogue by communicating with non-Muslim parents and external parties to avoid misunderstanding, and 4) the strengthening of religious identity is built through open discussion based on freedom of opinion for every student, without any form of coercion and discrimination.

Abstract

This research article was based on a literature review using the lens of a socio-historical perspective on the dynamic relationship between Islam and Christianity in Maluku throughout the social history of the Maluku archipelago. The research question “How did the metamorphosis of religious identities (Islam and Christianity) take place through the history and contemporary social reality in Ambon?” becomes a reference to trace the historical trajectory of relations between the two religions in Maluku. The religious conflict that occurred from 1999-2005 still leaves social residues that must be carefully considered for the future of these two religions in Maluku and Indonesia. A hermeneutic analysis of social history was used to map the sociological variables that determine the existence and interaction of Islam and Christianity in Maluku, which in turn also determine interfaith relations at large in the context of Indonesia’s pluralistic society. A multidisciplinary approach was used to synthesize various documents and analyses of some experts, especially Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological analytical framework. The result of this research is the construction of historical understanding that must be understood in managing religious pluralism, especially in the relations between Islam and Christianity in Maluku and Indonesia.

Abstract

This article discusses the activity of Jam‘iyyah Ahli al-Tarīqah al-Mu‘tabarah al-Nahdiyyah (JATMAN) in promulgating Islamic moderation on digital media. Given the swift flow of narratives of radicalism that has spread to various corners of the archipelago, an alternative contribution from the Sufi order (tarekat) is necessary regarding the scheme and model of mainstreaming Islamic moderation on the digital realm in order to deal with this problem. This research focuses on the Islamic moderation found at JATMAN’s official website, namely jatman.or.id. The research employs a qualitative approach which examines documents, manuscripts, audio-visual, and other authoritative sources. The collected data is analyzed and described descriptively and narratively. To enrich the method, Marshall McLuhan’s mass media theory is also used. This study reveals that the mainstreaming model of Islamic moderation found at jatman.or.id. is formatted in the presentation of short articles and short video recordings that emphasize the insistence of moderate Islam and its applicability with the Sufism. In addition, viewed from Marshall McLuhan’s theory it is also found that JATMAN has creatively implemented certain formula to make the dissemination of Islamic moderation more efficient and attractive using its own website, i.e. Jatman.or.id. It seems that the existence of Islamic moderation campaign of JATMAN will continue along with the existence of the Jatman.or.id to deliver messages of peaceful Islam.

Abstract

In a semiotic framework, hadith literature can be read as a prophetic text. With this perspective, hadith literature is no longer functional solely in the structure of Islamic legal sources, but more broadly as a language and discourse for the prophetic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, which in its nature is intended “for all creatures” (li-l-‘ālamīn). This research then tries to reveal how Islamic prophetic language unit is formed in a whole prophetic text discourse. To take Halliday’s approach, a language unit can create its own language environment. Thus, hadith literature, as a medium for the functioning of a particular language unit, can create its own language environment, which is the prophetic language environment. A prophetic language, of course, will only be meaningful in its own ecosocial environment and can also become what is called “antilanguage” for different contexts. Yet, in fact, some hadith literatures show the presence of poetic texts in them. These poetic texts take the form of classical Arabic poetry from the pre-Islamic tradition which, if we refer to Quran 36:69, would be considered incompatible with prophethood. By unraveling the intertwining of these texts, this study seeks to show how the situation of intertextuality can pave the way for a new reading of Islamic prophetic texts. Poetic texts, in this case, may constitute a functional element that makes an important contribution in establishing Islamic prophetic discourse.
