Abstract

Live pigs are still the mainstay of livestock sub-sector exports inIndonesia. Although pig farming in Indonesia has competitivenessin the international market, its productivity shows a decliningcondition. The purpose of this research is to measure the level oftechnical efficiency of small-scale pig breeding and fatteningbusinesses. The data used come from the results of the FarmHousehold Survey conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics(BPS). The survey was conducted in 20 provinces in Indonesia, with a sample size of 6,681 small-scale or household-scale pigfarming. The research used the Stochastic Production Frontier(SPF) model to measure the level of technical efficiency of pigfarming and used the maximum likelihood method to estimate it. The results showed that the level of technical efficiency of pigfarming is relatively low. The average technical efficiency level offattening pig farming is higher than that of the breeding. Thefactors of farming experience, market orientation, and feed typecombination have a positive influence in improving efficiency. Public policies that improve pig farmers' access to farm inputs andmarkets are expected to significantly improve the productivity ofsmall-scale pig farming.

Abstract

The uncontrolled COVID-19 transmission has changed the socio-demographic conditions of households in Surakarta City. These changes influenced households’ decisions on spending and consumption due to the implementation of social distancing and mobility restriction policies. Thus, this study aims to (1) identify the socio-demographic characteristics of households, (2) identify food shopping and consumption patterns of households due to COVID-19 and the implementation of the PSBB policy, and (3) estimate the relationship between socio-demographic conditions and food shopping and consumption patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic in Surakarta City. This study collected data from 120 respondents through an online survey from August 2021 to September 2021. The results indicated that households reduced food purchases, often bought food from local stores, and often shopped in small stores. Meanwhile, the change in consumption patterns was the increased frequency of in-home activities, namely eating alone or with family and sparing time to improve cooking habits at home. Through chi-square analysis, changes in households’ shopping and consumption patterns were found to be significant to some socio-demographic characteristics, including age, education level, income, and occupation. The results of this study can provide information to the government to design evidence-based policies during post-pandemic recovery in Surakarta City

Abstract

Tomatoes are one of the daily necessities for people. In general, consumers favor tomatoes with few seeds. Therefore, there must be efforts made to improve the quality of tomatoes, one of which is to reduce the number of seeds, even if it is possible to make tomatoes without seeds (seedlessness). By applying Gibberellic acid (GA) during the growth phase of tomato plants, it is possible to enhance tomato quality through technology. The application of GA to certain plants can reduce the number of tomato seeds and increase their sweetness. It is necessary to discover a way to use GA-containing natural ingredients to prepare for the high cost of synthetic GA. Onions are one of the natural ingredients that contain GA. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effect of applying onion extract as a source of GA to obtain the optimum concentration of onion extract that can improve the quality of tomato fruit. The experimental design utilized Randomized-Group Design with five different treatments: no spraying, spraying with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% onion extract. According to the findings, the application of onion extract improved the quality of tomato fruit. This condition is reflected by a decrease in the number and weight of seeds per fruit and an increase in the fruit's vitamin C content. Therefore, it is essential to conduct this research to produce inexpensive, high-quality tomatoes to sustain the economy and increase farmers' income

Abstract

Indonesian lettuce production is still lower than consumption.Lettuce production in Indonesia is still low because hydroponiccultivation needs more concern with the water and sunlight factors. This first study aimed to determine the contribution of water andsunlight to the growth of lettuce. The second study aimed to find outthe difference in lettuce production between the difference in waterand sunlight conditions. This research used the experimentalmethod. The research was conducted in a field laboratory andhydroponic village at the Faculty of Agriculture, Halu OleoUniversity. Data collection methods using field observations andmeasurements. The first objective data analysis techniquesdescribed water quality and sunlight measurements. The secondobjective data analysis used a description of the result of the lettucevariable costing. The results showed that water and sunlightcontributed to the production of lettuce. The water adds nutrients, and the sunlight does not direct to lettuce-affected plants, whichtend to have broad and healthy leaves. The good water and sunlightconditions contribute to pressing the cost of maintaining plants andraising the profit from lettuce production. These results areimportant to the attention of the water and sunlight conditions thatcan raise lettuce production in Indonesia

Abstract

The demand for herbal plants has increased significantlyin the last few years, especially during the covid 19pandemic. People believe that herbal products have savorsto maintain body immunity. The purpose of this study wasto analyze internal factors (strengths and weaknesses) andexternal factors (opportunities and threats), formulatepolicies, and identify priority strategies that can be appliedby farmers in developing herbal farming. This researchhad conducted in Pace Village, Silo District, JemberRegency, from August to November 2021. The analysisused internal and external factors analysis, SWOT matrix, and QSPM analysis to determine priority strategies. Theinternal and external factor analysis showed that herbalplant farming was in Region V with defend and maintainposition. Based on the SWOT matrix, eight strategies hadearned to develop a herbal business. Based on the QSPManalysis, the key strategy was to increase farmers'knowledge regarding the prospects and marketing ofherbal plants, with a total value of 8.365
