Abstract

The study on the abundance and distribution of three species of botia namely B.hymenophysa Bleeker, B.macracantha (Bleeker,1852)W B.reversa (Roberts,1989) was conducted in Sibau watershed (from June 21 to July 10 1996) and in Embaloh watershed (from November 21 to December 10,1996 and from September 5 to September 25, 1997).It was found that the abundance of each B.hymenophysa, B.macracantha andB.tevctsz was not significant different in these two watershed.Among the fish species collected, these three species of Botia can b categorized as the group offish with low abundance.B.hymenophysa is the most widely distributed fish among three species o/Botia in these two watersheds. In these watersheds, this fish was more distributed in tributary sites than in mainstream sites of Embaloh and Sibau river. On the other hand, the distribution pattern of B.reversa in these watersheds was different. In Sibau watershed, this fish is more distributed in mainstream sites, in Embabh watershed however, this fish was more distributed in tributaries sites. In some localities the distribution of B.hymenophysa and B.reversa are overlaps. In Sibau river, B.macracantha was found both in mainstream sites and its tributary, but in Embabh river, it was found only in a tributary site. It was also found that these three Botia could co-exist with other species.

Abstract

Effect of Sucrose and Glutamine on Anter Culture ofSolanum khasianum Clarke, Djunaedi Gandawidjaja.Anther ofSolanum khasianum Clarke were cultured on MS medium enriched with sucrose (30, 60, 75, 90 g/l)combined with glutamine (0, 200, 400, 600 mg/l)or with sucrose (60 g/1) combined with glutamine at low concentrations (0, 0.5,2.5, 5.0,10.0,20.0,50.0 mg/l).Callus formation was affected by the interaction of sucrose and glutamine. Callus formation decreased with the increasing concentration of sucrose or glutamine. Combination of sucrose and glutamine was unable to regenerate planletfrom the callus.

Abstract

The Mistletoe o/Dendrophthoe pentandra (Loranthaceae) growing on several plant collection at Taman Hutan Raya Bengkulu.Thirty one infected and uninfected branches of five host species were observed, i.e.Archidendron bubalinum(Leguminosae),Rhodamnia cinerea (Myrtaceae),Dillenia excelsa (Dilkniaceae),Aporosa aurita (Euphorbiaceae) and'Vitex pinnata (Verbenaceae). The results showed that the host tissue can be destroyed through penetration and development of primer haustorium. Moreover, in the natural conditions, the mistletoe causes degradation of the distal part of the infected branches.

Abstract

Using Indirect Hemqiglutination (IHA) test on 26 domesticfowl (Gallus sp.)and domestic pigeon (Columba liviaj were screened "Toxoplasrna gondii infection. All of the serum samples tested were positiffor this protopal infection. From the quantitatif test on 14positives serum samples, 14,28 % has the lowest liter of1£4 and 7,14 % has the highest liter of 1:1024. Mode of the disease spreading and the prevention off.gondii were discussed.

Abstract

The study was conducted to analyse genetic diversity of Goffini Finsch Cockatoo (Cacatua goffini Finsch) bird using RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) marker.PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) was performed on DNA samples extracted from 14 birds, using 18 random 10-merprimers and 2 random 12-merprimers. Fourteen out of 20 primers (70 %) successfully amplified DNAfragmens and 11 out of 14 primers (78,57 %) generated 1-2 specific alkies. The result clearly demonstrated that the RAPD marker allows for genetic diversity analyses of these birds in efficiently. Tree of relationship among 14 birds showed that there were two groups in the population ofGoffin 's Cockatoo.

Abstract

ApreBminary study on flowers of some wild-minor Zingiberaceae species was conducted to know their generative reproduction andpossiblefertilisation mechanism. Nine species from five wild-minor Zingiberaceae genera grown in Bengkulu Forestry Grand Park :Achasma macrocheilos Griff., A.triorgyale Bak.,Amomum aculeatum Roxb.,A.maxima Roxb.,A.testaceum BJdl, Homstedtia minor VaL, H. scyphus Ret.Nicolaia speciosa Bl, and Zingiber aromaticum VaL, were in situ observed. As much as 90% of the species were found in flowering stage in the study periods, between September and December 1995, 75% of the plants set fruit and seed while 25% set seeded fruit according to native people from neighbour village. All of the flowers showed that many spikelet might be anthesi edper spike per day and were terminally heated on non leafy "stem".Some stigmas observed were occupied by some pollens though pollinator was absent. In addition, stigma - anther distances were very near (0-3 mm).We found that generative bioreproduction was active and productive and autofertili^ation mechanism might be considered to be occurred on the species.

Abstract

Star fruit(Averrhoa carambola L.)is considered originally from Indonesia. In-vitro propagation of star fruit- is a very few.Propagation of star fruit through leaf, seedling and cotyledon culture have succeeded but its propagation through root culture has not been reported. This experiment was carried out to know the responses of star fruit root culture.Roots of young seedling of star fruit grown in-vitro were cut and cultured on one-halfMurashige & Skoog (MS)medium with or without addition of1 mg/16-ben^ylaminopurine (BA).The response of explants were determined by age of the seedlings which young seedlings were more response than the old ones. Somatic embryogenesis occurred on explan star fruit roots after 9 weeks incubation. Explants produced little callus on excised roots andprofused multiple shoots on MS with addition of BA, whereas explants only produced a few shoots without any producing callus on medium MS without any addition ofBA. This indicated that star fruit can be propagated from its root which is a very rare success of the other plant regeneration from root culture.

The capacity of Macrocheles merdarius Berlese to destroy Musca domestica Unnaeus eggs were related to the mite's development stage. Predation abiality of adult femak M. merdarius on fy eggs was 1.8 egg, followed by deutonymphal stage as much as 1.3 eggs and no predation by the protonymphal stage at all.

Abstract

Tintomophatogemcfungus is isolated from an infected pupae ofH. thrax -L (Hesperiidae: Lepidoptera). The fungus 3 is cultured and determined as Beauveria sp.Conidia suspension of the fungi (7.6x10 conidia/ml) use as inoculant and reinoculated to five of difference larval stages. The larvae were cultured in the laboratory. The infected larvae become weak and finally died at ten days after inoculation. It is highly indication that the fungi may be potentially applicable as biocontrol agent for the insect. The fungus attack the E. thrax since the beginning of the larvae stage.
