Abstract

This study gathered data from Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) in preparation for teaching practicum at a university in Indonesia. The study utilized a qualitative approach to comprehend the current practices in preparing participants of the teaching practicum and identifying the essential aspects needed to be addressed by research participants (PSTs, Practicum Supervisors, and Classroom Supervisors). The study found several courses that have helped PSTs in scaffolding their journey toward their practicum, including curriculum and material development, micro-teaching, and practicum orientation. However, as PSTs conduct their practicum, the dynamic and challenges were inevitably evident throughout the journey. The skills and knowledge they have studied have not been able to be fully utilized in the teaching practicum. These are reflected in their responses related to their confidence handling classroom management, language skills, identifying their role as practicum teacher, and the effectiveness of the current practice of classroom observation. The study concludes the importance of adjusting and reflecting on relevant aspects and knowledge that need to be integrated into the preparation of the teaching practicum. A systematic and continual innovation will need to be the focus of stakeholders in the teacher education prior to the teaching practicum.

The subjects of this study were 18 students from the English Education Department of UIN Walisongo Semarang in the fifth semester of the academic year 2020. The researcher will use questionnaires in this study to determine students' perceptions of using Whatsapp in EFL Classroom. Based on the study's findings, it can be said that while WhatsApp is very user-friendly and a great learning tool, it cannot yet take the role of traditional classroom instruction. Students may communicate and interact with teachers and other students through WhatsApp. It also makes it easier to disseminate information and educational materials. Giving assignments through WhatsApp is also highly practical, and the collection is very beneficial for students. However, WhatsApp still has flaws. For example, fiber requires a significant internet allowance, which is obviously expensive, and a solid network is required. However, not all places in Indonesia have stable networks. The findings could be useful information for English language teachers who want to use Whatsapp application in their courses. Keywords: EFL Classroom, Mobile Application, Online Learning, Student Perception, Whatsapp Application.

Abstract

The purpose of this researchwas to find out how the Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy affects students' descriptive text writing skills, particularly with regard to generic structure. The research design used for this quantitative study was a quasi-experimental one. 397 students from SMA Negeri 3 Pematangsiantar's class X make up the sample population. The sample was chosen using purposeful sampling. The sample was divided into the experimental and control groups. A 34-student experimental class called Class X IPA 6 was taught using the Think Talk Write (TTW) Strategy. 34 students in Class X IPA 2 make up the control group, who receive traditional instruction. The instrument for gathering data was a writing test. The results of data analysis using the t-test formula showed that the t-test value was greater than the t-table value (t-test t-table = 2,5 1.668). The results show that while Ho is rejected, Ha is accepted. It is therefore possible to draw the conclusion that the Think Talk Write (TTW) strategy significantly affects students' capacity to write descriptive text.

Abstract

This research study aims to investigate and identify the equivalence level of translation from textbooks using a qualitative approach with content analysis. As qualitative research, this study presented an analysis of the strategy made by the translator on how English text (Pretext for Mass Murder) was translated into Indonesian. The research study was started through observation of the source language that involved reading, identifying, classifying and evaluating the data. The collected data were analyzed descriptively under four main headings of equivalence level proposed by Mona Baker, namely in word level, above word level, grammatical level, and textual level equivalence. The sampling data of this research study is 150 sentences taken randomly, which are classified as word level (N=58, 39%), above word level (N=45, 30%), grammatical level (N=35, 30%), and textual level (N=12,8%). The findings demonstrated that the translator used different strategies creatively to find out the closest meaning of translation between the source language and the target language. In addition, word level equivalence was found to be the most dominant data compared to others. Keywords: translation, equivalence, the source language and target language.
