Abstract

Islamic thought in the last several decades of Indonesia has been dynamic. As such is evidenced by the emergence of some new terms related to Indonesian Islam, such as modernist Muslim, trans-formative Islam, Islamic postmodernism, Indigenous Islam, and Nusantara Islam (Islam of the archipelago). These terms constitute an idea of thoughts largely promoted by Nahdlatul Ulama, or NU (the largest organization of traditionalist Muslim in Indonesia and elsewhere), especially among its younger generation. As a form of thoughts, they are considered fine. Yet, many groups of Muslim have objected them, arguing that they may become a new  form of “school of Islam” (madzhab). Nusantara Islam, in principle, promotes the values of tolerance and humanism, and recognizes local expressions of culture and beliefs, specific to the archipelago. This characteristic of Nusantara Islam is not dissimilar with that of the NU, that is, celebrating local tradition as a locus teologicus.  Thus, the emergence of Nusantara Islam discourse has become a heated debate in Muslim public, because of its inclusive style and its opposition with the so-called ‘Arabized Islam’.

Abstract

Public religious learning regularly held by Dewan Dakwah Lampung (Dakwah Council of Lampung) often contains issues of women and gender. Yet, their understanding of gender and women issues is largely influenced by religious interpretations, cultural stereotypes and juridical facts which do not preside with women, so that many of their advises on women issues are laden with gender inequalities. This is at odds with Islamic tenets on values of equality and respect to human dignity, irrespective of gender difference.  On the basis of this problem, there is a need to redesign the contents of religious learning, one that is free from gender bias and is based on the gender quality principles. This effort then should be manifested in the form of learning modules, representing religious messages that are gender-equality-friendly, written in a persuasive language, printed in a charming style, and then spread to religious believers. This effort is important   because historical facts have pointed to  the seclusion of  women  in and by many traditions. Thus, if more chances are given to women to compete with men in a sportive manner, it is more likely that they will achieve as many prosperity as their men peers do.

Abstract

Dakwah management must be carried out in accordance with sociocultural conditions of the concerned society, which is bound to a constant  progress triggered by globalization and the advance of technology, in turn often causing a multi-dimensional crisis. On the basis of this argument, this research is aimed at exploring the ways in which a Muslim adviser (Penyuluh Agama Islam) could effectively play his counselling roles in society. By focusing on a Muslim society in Langkapura, Bandar Lampung, this paper proposes the significant use of local wisdom for every dakwah management. It argues that every religious counselling activity needs to based on a well-constructed synergy between religious teachings and local wisdom of the society in which the activity of dakwah is taking place. By doing this, this research is (expected to be) able to produce a religious counselling model with a local wisdom approach, that may be adapted in another similar context.

Abstract

This article focuses on discussing the influence of Al-Syahrastani’s thoughts on the study of religions in Indonesia. The field of study of religions, which originally is called comparative study of religions, is a branch discipline of religious sciences, century-long established in the world, including in Indonesia. In his book al-Milal wa al-Nihal, Syahrastani explains a variety of religious communities, such as the Stoicism, the materialists, atheist philosophers, the Shabi’un, and many others including the ahl al-kitab (communities of the book). This study is of a literary research, and basses its analysis on both primary and secondary sources. Results of this study point to the influences of Syharastani’s thoughts on the development of study of religions in Indonesia. While these influences are indirect in nature, a large number of Muslim and non-Muslim scholars in Indonesia has referred to Syahrastani’s thoughts. Even the publication of the Indonesian translation of Syahrastani’s al-Milal wa al-Nihal, has enabled students of the department of study of religions in many Indonesian Islamic universities to learn various category and types of religious communities as solicited by Syahrastani.

Abstract

This writing studies Syatibi’s thought on the appropriation of both the Qur’an and Hadith of the makkiyah period as “the root” (usul) and those of the madaniyyah as “the branch” (furu’). Such thought implies the function of the makkiyah texts as “the principle”, and the madaniyah ones as “the implementation”.  This paper then questions the extent to which such thought by Syatibi is relevant with the renewal of Islamic law in contemporary Muslim societies. It uses literary study as its research method, and does its data analysis qualitatively. This research finds out that, Syatibi views the makkiyah texts as an ushul that constitutes a subsistence of maqasid syariah (purposes of the law),  while the madaniyah texts as a furu’, one that forms the implementation of that maqasid syairah. Using his theory of istiqrai makwani, Syatibi views the makkiyah texts as a deductive justification which consists of legal norms between human beings. The teachings of morality and ethics contained in the makkiyah justification are fixed, while those of the madaniyah justification are dynamic and contingent. The consequence is that any form of obligation and prohibition in Islamic law which are derived from the madaniyah justification is dynamic and are changing according to its spatial and historical contexts: hence the compatibility of the texts with the principle of maqasid syariah.
