Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using pictures in teaching writing descriptive text of the second year students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu in the Academic Year 2016/2017 in writing descriptive text. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. This research used one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument used in this research was tests (pretest and posttest). The population of this research was 296 of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu and the sample of this research is the VIII E of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu which is total number of students of class is 35 students. The data of this research were collected by giving the writing test about descriptive text (pretest-posttest) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of pretest was 48.57 and the mean score of posttest was 58.95. Based on the data analysis, It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It also meant that teaching writing by using pictures technique was effective to improve students’ writing ability especially in descriptive text.Keywords: Pictures, Writing, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at investigating the level of the students’ ability at English Study Program of FKIP of University of Riau in identifying round and flat characters in reading short drama scripts and it what factors contributing to the ability of the students. The research design is a descriptive quantitative and qualitative research (mixed-method). There were 25 students chosen as the samples of this research. The instruments of the research were 30 multiple choice questions assesed by using Heaton’s formula that were analyzed by using Harris’ measurement. Then, interview questions were analyzed by using Gay (2000) ways. The quantitative data show that there were no students who were in excellent ability level, 5 students (25%) who were in good ability level. Then, there were 15 students (50%) who were in mediocre level and 5 students (25%) who were in very poor level. The qualitative data show that there are some factors which contributed to the students’ ability in identifying round and flat characters. They are related to students’ reading strategy (the beginning and the ending of the story), vocabulary mastery, guessing strategy and the length of the storyKey words: student, ability, round, flat, characters

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of Story Pyramid strategy on reading comprehension of students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru. The design of the study is one group pretest-treatment-posttest design. The sample is VIII.6 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 69.35 and the mean score of post-test is 77.83. In other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. The value of t-test (9.575) is higher than t-table (2.074) at 5% of the significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It could be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Story Pyramid strategy on improvement of reading comprehension of students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru.Keywords: Effect, Story Pyramid, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research aimed to find out the ability of the first grade students of SMAN 1 Simpang Kanan Rokan Hilir in Reading Comprehension. The population of the research is the first grade students of SMAN 1 Simpang Kanan and the sample is 32 students. The instrument used in this research is a reading test. This reading test consisted of 35 questions . Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the ability of the first grade students of SMAN 1 Simpang Kanan Rokan Hilir in reading comprehension is in good level with mean score is 63.14. Further, the result shows that there are 2 students who are in excellent level, 18 students are in good level, 8 students are in average level, and 4 students are in poor level.Key Words: Students’ Ability, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at investigating the effect of using Board Game on the second year students’ speaking ability at SMP IT Al-Ihsan Boarding School, Siak Hulu, Kampar. This study was an experimental quantitative research.The population of this research was all the second year students at SMP IT AL-Ihsan Boarding School. This research was conducted by applying Board Game in teaching speaking to the experimental group (Qodisiyah Class) selected by employing cluster random sampling method. There were 17 students in experimental group who had a pre-test, then they were taught by using Board Game, and they finally had a post-test to see the increase of their scores. After all data were collected, the researcher calculated them by using t-Test method in Ms. Excel 2010. With the t-Test score was 4.41, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Board Game on the second year students’ speaking ability at SMP IT Al-Ihsan Boarding School that could be seen from the improvement of students’ scores in post-test.Key Words: Junior High School Students, Speaking Ability, Board Game

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at finding out if there is any effect of using Top-Down Processing approach on reading comprehension ability of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. This study was a pre-experimental research. The researcher used one group pre-test post-test design to distinguish the effect of using top-down processing approach between the pre-test and the post-test results. The total population in this study was 165 students from four classes. To choose the sample the researcher used cluster random sampling technique. Class VIII.C with 40 students was chosen as the sample. The instrument used to get the data is an objective test. The form of text in the test is narrative text. The test consists of 4 narrative texts with 20 objective questions. Each text has 5 multiple choice type of questions. The researcher used t-test by employing SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solutions) statistics version 17.0 to measure and compare the students’ scores in reading comprehension between the pre-test and the post-test results. The post-test result (79.75) was higher than the pre-test result (61.12). The correlation coefficient between the pre-test and post-test results is 0.868 which indicates that it has a strong correlation. The result indicates that using top-down processing approach is effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension ability.Key Words: Effects, top-down processing approach, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims at finding the effect of picture series on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. The method used in this study was quantitative research and the research design was quasi-experimental study. The researcher used Cluster Random Sampling technique to choose the sample. For 165 students of the population, class VIII B was chosen as the experimental class and VIII D as control class. The instrument of this research was in form of multiple choices test for pre-test and post-test. The test was narrative text and there were 30 multiple choice items for each test. The researcher used formula t-test to analyze the data. The result of this study shows that there was a significant difference on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text by using picture series and without using picture series. The mean score for experimental class was 61.5 (pre-test) and 83.8 (post-test). The mean score for control class was 71.8 (pre-test) and 82 (post-test). It can be seen that on the df =81 in the degree of significance 5%, the value of degree significance is 1.98. By comparing the value to and tt the result showed that to is higher than tt (to>tt = 5.44>1.98). The alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Therefore It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using picture series on reading comprehension of the second year students of SMPN 40 Pekanbaru.Key words: Effect, picture series, reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This study was aimed at finding out the effect of journal writing on enhancing the writing skill of the first year students of SMA Babussalam Pekanbaru. It was an experimental research with one pre-post test design. A single group was chosen to be the sample of this study by cluster random sampling to get a treatment. There were 24 students joined this study as experimental group. A writing test was used both in pre and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre and post-test and to analyze the hypotheses, t-test was used. After analyzing the data, it was found out that t-test score was 5.74 while t-table score was 2.069. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be further understood that ‘There is significant effect of journal writing on enhancing the writing skill of the first year students of SMA Babussalam Pekanbaru’. Based on research findings, it is suggested that the students can write their journals for several months so the results will be better.

Abstract

Abstract: This study is aimed at investigating how the English teachers implement the Scientific Approach (SA) in teaching English in Senior High School in Pekanbaru. The research design is a categorized as a qualitative research under interpretive research paradigm. There were 3 English teachers selected as the participants of this research. The instruments used in this research were an interview question (semi-structured) and classroom observation. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using Gay’s theory (2000). The result of the study showed that the English teachers in Senior High School Pekanbaru encountered problems dealing with understanding the concept of SA and the implementation of the Curriculum 2013 in classroom activities. Data from semi-structured interviews indicate that participants of this research did not seem to have a clear understanding on the five stages of Scientific Approach in teaching English. However, data from the classroom observation show that some teachers have implemented some stages of the approach quite well, especially in observing, questioning, and experimenting. Finally, it is suggested for the English teachers to get more knowledge and skills in implementing the Scientific Approach as determined by the 2013 Curriculum.Keywords: Curriculum, Implementation, Scientific Approach, Teaching English
