Abstract

Abstract : This descriptive research aimed to know L1 interference on English Study Program FKIP – Universitas Riau students’ essay writing and to find out the types of interferences that are commonly made by the students of English Study Program FKIP – Universitas Riau. This study used a descriptive research designed to examine the interference of L1 on English Study Program students’ writing. The population of this research was the 5th semester students of English Department (2015), Universitas Riau which consisted of 3 classes with the total of 90 students. The sample of this study was 25% from 90 students or 22 students. The instrument of the research was a writing test. The participants were asked to choose one of the five topics and write an essay about the topics that is given. The aspects of writing which were evaluated in this research were grammar, spelling, dictions and organizations. There were 61.09% students that were found making error in grammar, 15.89% that were found making error in spelling, 18.63% that were found making error in Diction, and 4.16% that were found making error in Organization. Based on the data calculation, the results showed the significant interference of students’ mother tongue (L1) towards the students’ essay writing at English Study Program FKIP - Universitas Riau.Keywords : Interference, L1, essay, writing

Abstract

EFL learners majoring in English experience different reading histories which areinterested to be explored. It can be conducted through one of classroom activities in Extensive Reading. This article is based on the literature review for a study “Exploring Personal Reading Histories for Learners of FKIP University of Riau”. This article aims to describe how Exploring Personal Reading Histories is appropriate for the learners of FKIP University of Riau. Critical analysis was conducted in order to gain the aim of this study. The result of analysis shows how Exploring Personal Reading Histories is appropriate for Learners of FKIP University of Riau in terms of the context of Indonesian EFL learners and the activities of extensive reading for reading competency. The result of this review is expected to be meaningful for the study designed.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the attitudes of students of Physical Education towards English based on three components of attitude: cognitive, affective, and conative and to find out the motivation of students of Physical Education in learning English in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The research employed descriptive method with quantitative approach. 53 students were taken as the sample of this study selected using total sampling technique, The data were gathered using as set of questioanare which consisted of statement of attitude and motivation aspects. The results of the study showed that the percentage of students attitude toward English in terms of positive cognitive aspect was 88.7% and negative cognitive aspect was 11,3%. This means that the positive cognitive attitude was higher than negative cognitive aspect. In terms of positive affective aspect was 22,6% and negative affective aspect was 77.4% . which were categorized negative affective attitude, it was higher than positive cognitive. While the percentage in terms of negative conative attitude aspects was 96.2% which was categorize as very high and positive conative attitude aspect was 3,8% which was categorize as very low. The result also indecated that the percentage of students extrinsic motivation was 64,2% and intrinsic motivation was 64,2% which were categorized as high

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims to discover the effect of Inside Outside Circle Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMP Islam As Shofa Pekanbaru academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was VII 4 students which consisted of 27 students. The sample was selected by using cluster random sampling technique. This research is pre-experimental and the data were collected by means of pre-test and post-test design in the form of speaking test which focused on describing objects. The data were analyzed using five components of speaking: pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The results showed that the score of the pretest was 39,60 and the post-test was 65,58 while the difference from both scores was 25,98. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of Inside Outside Circle Method on the speaking ability of the first year students of SMP Islam As Shofa Pekanbaru. In other words, the teaching of speaking through Inside Outside Circle Method, as one of the alternative speaking activities, has an effect on the students’ speaking ability.Keywords: Inside Outside Circle Method, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract : The objectives of this study are to observe what types of code-mixing and the linguistic features of English lexical items of code-mixing used in the headlines of economic-business issues in local newspapers. The study was conducted from March to April 2018 by using mixed method which combines both descriptive qualitative and quantitative method. Findings reports that the most dominant types of code-mixing used are intra-sentential code-mixing (93%) followed by involving a change of pronunciation (5%), and intra-lexical code-mixing (2%). The most dominant the linguistic feature of English lexical items of code-mixing used are proper noun (54.32%) followed by common noun (19.14%), abbreviation (14.20%), adjectives (6.17%), verb (3.09%), prefix (1.85%) and adverb (1.23%).Keyword : Sociolinguistics, Code-Mixing, Headlines

Abstract

Abstract : This quasi-experimental research aimed to find out whether there is an effect of heritage narrative on reading comprehension of second year students of SMP Telekomunikasi Pekanbaru. This research was a nonequivalent (pretest and posttest) control-group design. In this design, there two groups as participant (experimental and control group). Heritage narrative was applied in teaching the experimental group while control group was taught by using narrative from other culture. The population of this research was all students of second year students in academic year of 2017/2018. Total number of population was 71. The sample is chosen by using cluster random sampling. In analyzing data, the writer used quantitative approach. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean scores of pre-test were 44.86 (experimental group) and 43.47 (control group). The mean score of students after the treatment were higher than pre-test. Moreover, from the statistical analysis, it was found out the t-test (4.75) was higher than t-table (2.01) at the significance level 5%. It can be concluded that there was effect of heritage narrative on students ’reading comprehension.Key Words: Heritage Narrative, Reading Comprehension.

Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of using pictures in teaching writing descriptive text of the second year students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu in the Academic Year 2016/2017 in writing descriptive text. This is a pre-experimental research conducted by using a pre-test – treatment – post-test design. This research used one group pretest-posttest design. The instrument used in this research was tests (pretest and posttest). The population of this research was 296 of the Second Year Students of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu and the sample of this research is the VIII E of SMPN 1 Siak Hulu which is total number of students of class is 35 students. The data of this research were collected by giving the writing test about descriptive text (pretest-posttest) to the students. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of pretest was 48.57 and the mean score of posttest was 58.95. Based on the data analysis, It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and the post-test because the t-test observed was higher than t-table. In other words, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. It also meant that teaching writing by using pictures technique was effective to improve students’ writing ability especially in descriptive text.Keywords: Pictures, Writing, Descriptive Text

Abstract

Abstract : This research was a descriptive research of the influence of Indonesian Language on students’ speech at the English Study Program FKIP Universitas Riau. The aim of this research was to know whether or not the Indonesian Language influenced the students’ speech at the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau. The population of this research was the fourth year (8th Semester) students of English Department (2013)of FKIP Universitas Riau with total 90 students. The sample of this research was 25% of the total population which was 23 students. The instrument of this research was interview. In conducting this research, there were five topics in interview which used to know the students’ speech based on three language components: syntactic, lexical, and phonological. To get the quantitative data in this research, one rater was involved to analyze the errors that the students made. From the result of the oral test, the writer concluded that the percentage of the influence on students’ speech in terms of syntactic was 26.08%. The percentage of influence on students’ speech in terms of lexical was 14.49%. The percentage of influence on students’ speech in terms of phonological was 28.98%. The students’ influence score was 69.56% which was categorized as positive. The research finding also shows that Indonesian Language influenced the students’ speech in terms of phonological the most. Therefore, the students should pay attention on learning and practice speaking English more. The educators could also help the students to listen to the correct pronunciation that the educator has modeled, so that they’ll be able to pronounce the words correctly.Keywords : speech, influence, Indonesian language

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive study aims to find out the grammatical errors, and the most frequent error made by the third year students of English study program Universitas Riau in writing an argumentative essay. The population of this study was the third year students of English study program Universitas Riau in the academic year 20174/2018. The third semester students were consisted of 90 as the population in this research. Thirty (30) students were taken as the sample. The method used in this research is a descriptive method. The data were collected using a written test, and were analyzed by using using Error Analysis Technique. The research findings reveal that the grammatical errros occurred were Subject verb agreement, Verb tense and form, Word order, Plurality, Preposition, Articles, Passive voice, and Auxiliary; the most frequent error was in Subject-Verb Agreement with 127 (29%) frequency.Keywords: Grammar, Error, Errors Analysis, Argumentative Essay

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out the effect of Small Group Discusstion Technique on the Ability of the Second Year Students of SMP N 5 Kerinci Kanan in Comprehending Report Texts. There were 98 population and only 32 students as the sample through cluster random sampling technique,instead cluster random sampling allows the writer to collect data into small, more effective groups. The test was carried out as pre-test. Thetreatmentwas applied by using small group discussion in reading report text and post-test. In order to know the difference between pre-test and post-test, and to testthe hypothesis, t-test formula was used. After analyzing the data, it was found that t-test score was 21.326 which t-table score in significance level df=32 was 0.349. Since t-test was higher than t-table, it can be concluded that alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other word, it can be restatedthat small group discussion can help students to improve their reading ability especially in report text.The implication of the finding is that the students should maximize the practice of small group discussion.Key Words:Effect, Small Group Discussion, Report Text
