Abstract

Abstract: This research is aimed to investigate the ability of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah in writing recount text. The problem discussed in this study is : How good is the level of the tenth grade students ability in writing recount text? The methodology of this research is descriptive quantitative research. The data of the study are recount texts made by the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah. In this study, the instrument used in this research was a written test in the form of a report of science experiment. There are 7 classes for population of this research consists of 174 students. Since the material which investigated was a report of science experiment, so the writer took 69 students (X IPA 1, X IPA 2, X IPA 3) as the sample of the research selected by purposive sampling. The data of this research were collected by conducting a written test. The writer asked the students to write the scientific report based on the experiment that they have done. It might be chemistry, biology, or physics experiment. The results of data analysis showed the mean score of students’ ability in writing recount text was 70.71. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the ability of tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Rambah in writing recount text is in good level based on Brown’s analytical scale for rating composition tasks. In relation with the result of the study, it can be suggested (1) for the students, they need more practice in writing and should pay attention to grammar and mechanics aspects, since the score of these writing aspects were low, (2) it is better to English teachers to apply appropriate methods and techniques in teaching recount text in class to the students so that they are able to write recount text well, and (2) for the next researchers, it is hoped that this research can be a source of literature review to conduct similar researches.Keywords: Writing, Ability, Students’ Writing Ability, Recount Text

Abstract

Abstract : This pre-experimental research aimed to find out whether there is significant effect of Mind Mapping technique on the second year students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraphs at SMK YPPI Tualang. The writer used cluster sampling technique to determine the sample. The samples in this study were 30 students. Writing test is used to get the data on pre-test and post-test. In analyzing the data, the writer used t-test formula. The analysis of the data showed that there was significant effect of using Mind Mapping technique on students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraphs. The mean score of the students’ pre-test was 50.34. The mean score of the students’ post-test was 72.12. Moreover, from the statistical analysis, it was found out the t-obs (9.85) was higher that t-table at the level of significance 0.005 (1.699). Based on this finding, it is concluded that Mind Mapping technique can be used by the teacher as an alternative technique in teaching writing.Keywords: Mind Mapping Technique, Writing Ability, Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. It aimed to find out a significant effect of Think Pair Share technique on reading comprehension in narrative texts of the second year students at SMAN 1 Kateman, INHIL Regency. The population of this research was all of the second year students at SMAN 1 Kateman which consists of 278 students.  Cluster random sampling technique was used to select one class to be the sample. As a result, class XI Science 1 with 33 students was chosen as the sample. The instrument used was a reading test that consists of 35 questions in the form of multiple choice tests. The obtained data were analyzed by using SPSS version 16.0 for Windows. The results of data showed that mean score in post test was higher than mean score in pre test (79.42> 67.33). Then, the data analysis also showed that tobs was higher than ttable (2.72<15.194>2.03) in sig. 5% and 1%. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. In other words, there is significant effect of Think Pair Share technique on reading comprehension in narrative texts of the second year students at SMAN 1 Kateman, INHIL Regency.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research is aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of Story Pyramid strategy on reading comprehension of students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru. The design of the study is one group pretest-treatment-posttest design. The sample is VIII.6 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The results of the data analysis showed that the mean score of pre-test is 69.35 and the mean score of post-test is 77.83. In other words, the mean score of post-test is higher than pre-test. The value of t-test (9.575) is higher than t-table (2.074) at 5% of the significance level. Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It could be concluded that there is a significant effect of using Story Pyramid strategy on improvement of reading comprehension of students of SMP Babussalam Pekanbaru.Keywords: Effect, Story Pyramid, Reading Comprehension, Narrative Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This research aimed at finding out whether there is a significant effect of Storytelling strategy on the ability of first year students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension. The research design is a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample was X MIA-2 chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. The result showed that the mean score of post-test (76.00) was higher than mean score of pre-test (70.03). The value of t-test (15.48) was higher than t-table (2.04) at 5% of the significance level and t-table (2.75) at 1% of the significance level. Therefore, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and Null Hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It could be concluded that there was a significant effect of Storytelling strategy on the ability of first year students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru in reading comprehension.Keywords: Storytelling, Reading Comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This study was conducted to analyse the grammatical errors made by second semester students in writing paragraph at the English Study Program of Universitas Riau. The aim of this study was to find out eight types of common grammatical errors they are Passive Voice, Verb Tense and Form, Subject- Verb Agreement, Word Order, Preposition, Articles, Plurality, and Auxiliary that made by the participants of the study.Writing a paragraph test were administered to twenty seven participants. They were asked to write a paragraph in 90 minutes and based on the three topics provided by the writer. Three raters were involved in checking the grammatical errors on the participants’ paragraph writing. Then, the errors were classified and described. From the analysis, it was obtained that the participants of study made 80 errors. They were errors in terms of Verb Tense and Form (32.50%), Plurality (21.25%) and Subject-Verb Agreement (12.50%). The lowest percentage of errors was in terms of Word Order (5%) and Passive Voice (5%).Thus, it needs more concern on these aspects. Moreover, the other errors are need to be focused as well. It is recommended that other reseachers find the reasons of those comitted errors.Key Words: Error Analysis, Grammatical Errors, Writing Paragraph

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out the significant effect of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) towards the reading comprehension of the first grade students of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru. This study was one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this study was grade X students of SMAN 14 Pekanbaru which consisted of 7 classes with the total of 259 students. The sample of this study was X.4 class with 37 students. The instrument of the research was a reading test with multiple choice type. The test consisted of six texts where each text contained eight questions with five options (A,B,C,D and E). The writer conducted a try out before the treatment was held. The level difficulty formula by Heaton was used in this study to obtain the reliability and validity of the test. Furthermore, the t-test formula was used in order to analyze the data. The T-Test displayed that the results determined by the probability of sig. > 0.05, probability=0.000, that showed a strong correlation between Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) and students’ reading comprehension. t-obs result also showed that the students’ mean score of the post-test (67.04) was higher than the pre-test ( 54.59). Besides, the results of the analysis showed that the t-test was higher than the t-table (12.45>2.028) at the level sig. of 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) n-1=36. It means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. Based on the data calculation, the results showed the significant effects of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) towards the reading comprehension of the first grade students.Keywords: Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR), reading comprehension

Abstract

Abstract: This descriptive research was aimed at finding out the ability of the second year students of SMPN 1 Pekanbaru in comprehending short functional texts. This research focuses on students’ comprehending three kinds of short functional text in terms of advertisement, invitation card and short message text. The data were collected by usingreading comprehensiontest with multiple choice types. The test contained 36 items. The population were the second year students of SMPN 1 Pekanbaru in academic year 2016/2017.The sample size was 40 students out of the population, chosen by using cluster random sampling technique.Based on the data analysis, each type of short functional texts is in the good level with the mean score of 60.98, advertisement, 62.68 is in the good level, invitation card, 58.31is in mediocre level and short message text, 63.10 is in good level.As a conclusion, the highest score obtained by the students is in comprehending short message text with the mean score of 63.10 which is categorized into good level. The lowest score among three types of short functional text is in comprehending invitation card, with the mean score of 58.31 which is categorized into mediocre level. The implication of the findings is that the students need to learn more seriously about short functional text, particularly about invitation card.Keywords: Reading Ability, Short Functional Text.

Abstract

Abstract : The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of the first grade students’ ability of SMAN 12 Pekanbaru in writing narrative texts.The participants were 75 students. The data were collected using writing test. The research finding indicated that the application of using animation filmas a media could improve students’ writing ability. The result of pre-test showedthat the mean score of the students in experiment class was 47,68 and in control class was 45,08. The result of post-test showed that the mean score of the students in experiment class was 62,86 and in control class was 54,86.From the t obs result, it can be seen that the experiment class get score (23) and the control class (10,74). After obtaining the standard deviation both of experimental and control group, the standard error can be calculated. The standard error was 1,121 and the t table was 7,13.The data analysis technique was show whether the mean different was significant (t obs> t table). From the research finding, it can be concluded that using animation film can motivate students to engage in language learning.Thus, based on the above explanation, the writer concludes that using animation film is effective in improving students ability in writing narrative text.Keywords: Animation Film, Writing, Narrative Texts.

Abstract

Abstract: This pre-experimental research aimed to find out whether there is a significant effect of Mind Mapping Strategy on the writing descriptive text ability of the second year students of SMPN 01 Kampar Utara in the Academic Year 2016/2017. This research used one group pre-test and post-test design with six treatment meetings. The instrument used in this research was writing tests (pre-test and post-test). The population of this research was 103 eighth grade students of SMPN 01 Kampar Utara and the sample was class VIII A (25) students of SMPN 01 Kampar Utara. The data of this research were collected by writing tests of descriptive text. The data were analyzed using t-test formula. The results showed that the mean score of pre-test was 53.27, and the mean score of post-test was 70.1. Based on the data analysis, there was an increase the students’ averange score for pre-test (53.27) to post-test (70.1). Moreover from t-test, it was found that the t-obs (27.641 ) was higher than t-table (2.064). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis of this research was accepted and null hypothesis was rejected. This also means that teaching writing by using Mind Mapping Strategy was effective to improve the ability of students in writing Descriptive text.Key Words: Writing ability, mind mapping, descriptive text
