Abstract

The most ship accidents occurred on size between 35GT and 500GT, including traditional wooden boats. The accidents were dominated by capsizing due to bad weather. Therefore the safety of traditional wooden boats needs to be improved. This paper discusses the position of bilge keels and their impact on the roll motion performance of an Indonesian traditional wooden boat. The roll damping is determined by a roll decay test with three different positions of bilge keels, namely 15 degrees, 30 degrees, and 45 degrees. The roll amplitude is determined in the frequency domain by solving the uncoupled nonlinear roll motion equation with an effective wave slope coefficient calculated using the simplified Froude-Krylov assumption of roll exciting moment. The bilge keels position with the angle of 15 degrees reduced the roll amplitude of 18% while the position with an angle of 30 degrees decreases the roll amplitude by 7% of roll amplitude without bilge keels. The bilge keels position with an angle of 45 degrees reduced the roll amplitude by 2% of those without bilge keels. The natural roll period was not significantly affected by the bilge keels position. The bilge keels position with an angle of 15 degrees is the most effective position to reduce the roll amplitude.

Abstract

Transformation in ship geometry and the development of alternative materials to replace wood will certainly have an impact on the weight of construction, these changes will certainly affect the center of gravity and ship draft, such as wooden ships with steel frames which are made by wooden ship craftsmen in Takalar Regency, after being replaced with steel frame, laden increases with an increase in the draft will affect the hydrostatic characteristics of the ship and the ship's center of gravity, the change, of course, has an impact on the stability of the ship, so an inclining test is needed, so that wooden ship craftsmen can understand the relationship between ship geometry and ship weight. Therefore, in an effort to increase the knowledge of wooden ship craftsmen, inclining test training is a solution and is proposed for community service activities with method of presenting material and practicing directly on ships, the results of this training craftsmen are able to understand the emphasis on steel-constructed wooden ships in relation to life safety at sea and skilled in inclining to test.

Abstract

The operational activities of wooden ships are classified as very high so that the production of wooden boats still survives today, one of the groups of craftsmen in Takalar Regency is the "TORANI" group which specializes in producing wooden ships of 10 GT to 30 GT. High wooden ship operation activity, must always be improved quality in ensuring the safety of the ship improve the quality of ships in ensuring ship safety, the problems currently faced by partners are ship structure damage due to understanding of connection techniques, selection of ship construction dimensions and the use of bolts and pegs are not yet weak because the construction method is still based on experience. Based on observations in the field, it can be seen that there are many weaknesses made by craftsmen or builders in the connection of structures and also the selection or determination of the dimensions of the structure for example the placement of supports and beams are not fully in accordance with the global load and local loads of the ship structure, another weakness is the selection of the type of connection and the determination of dimensions not in accordance with existing regulations. To be able to provide an understanding, craftsmen need to be given socialization with the target craftsmen being able to recognize the importance of construction strength in ensuring ship safety, being able to use techniques for connecting construction components that meet the criteria and standards, selecting dimensions that match the criteria and standards and the correct bolts and pegs in component connection. wooden boat construction. The results obtained that the level of understanding and skills of the wooden ship craftsmen who received this training was very good. This is evidenced by the ability of the craftsmen to be able to apply construction connection methods

Abstract

The ship's resistance is important to know because correlates strongly to the power engine needs to reach the desired speed. One method can be applied on a small ship with full-scale free running within a ways pull small ship with other small ship for measure resistance value occurrence with scale equipment on the place between the ropes of the ship being towed and tugged. This method is very easy to apply to small ships. In general, manufacturers of traditional small ships do not carry out the full-scale test because they do not know the principles for determining engine power.
