Abstract

Teaching English to elementary school students must be prepared well in order to make the instruction successful. It must be taught by qualified English teachers who understand the characteristics of the students as well the appropriate teaching strategy. The teachers should understand that the process of teaching must be friendly child. It means that the materials are familiar with the students and they are in the level of their ability. The process of teaching must also suitable with their characteristics. Therefore, the English department lecturers of Nusantara PGRI Kediri University carried out a workshop for the elementary school English teachers at Kediri. The objective of the activity is to train the teachers so that they can apply in the classroom when they teach English for their students. The materials of the workshop covered the teacher’s attitude, how to develop the materials, and various teaching strategies. The teachers’ attitude is their expressions and body language when they interact with the students. They must leave the feeling of being teachers, but they merge as if they are children. The friendly child materials are the ones that the students are familiar. For examples, the topics are at their world, using simple expressions that are used in real context, and provided with media to support the context. Besides, they focus on more oral activities rather than written activities. Finally, the appropriate teaching strategies are songs, telling a story, and fun games.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of life, including the implementation of teaching and learning process at school, from kindergarten up to university. All of the teaching and learning process must be carried out via online to avoid contact with many people, so that it can reduce the spread of the virus. The condition has an impact on the implementation of Rural Community Service (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN) at University of Nusantara PGRI Kediri. The students can carry out the activity in the area where they live. Realizing the fact, the Community Service team adopted the program from the local government of Central Java Province, namely Jogo Tonggo. It is a program, which involves the society to be more aware and care to their neighbors, who have problems dealing with Covid-19. The idea was adopted by the team to share knowledge and experiences with children in the area where the English department student carried out the KKN. The activity was carried out at Tulungrejo Village, Pare District, Kediri. The children in the area, who missed the offline learning, were invited to join the program once a week. They were not only introduced the importance of health protocols, but also played and learned English and other subjects from their school with the student’s guidance. The purpose of the activity is to motivate them to stay enthusiastic about learning, and to reduce their activity of using too much gadget. The output of the program was the compilation of an manual to carry out English activities for children.

Abstract

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, teachers are required to carry out online learning. They may utilize technology in implementing the learning. They can choose one of interesting and interactive learning media in order to motivate their students and to promote learning. Based on the preliminary study in SMK PGRI 3 Kediri, it was found out that many teachers had not utilized the available learning platform. They only applied the application they were familiar to support their online learning, such as WhatsApp, Google Class, and Google Meet. Realizing the facts, the community service team carried out a training for the teachers to use interactive platform as media for learning, called Edmodo. The objectives the program were to train the teachers to use Edmodo platform for interactive learning, that included how to make new Edmodo accounts, how to make use the available facilities in Edmodo, and to train the school administrator to manage the program. The training was carried out in one month using in-and-on basis. The results of the training were that all teachers have already had Edmodo accounts and their account are connected with Edmodo group, which could be monitored by the school administrator.
