Abstract

Abstract

The objective of this study was to observe the reproductive characteristics of Palu fat-tailed sheep affected by animal parities given pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and genistein (GEN) as a synthetic phytoestrogen. This study employed 32 ewes arranged in a completely randomized experimental design. The first factor was parity (P2 and P3) and second factor was a hormonal treatment as follows; H0 (14 d-controlled internal drug release or CIDR implant as control), H1 (CIDR+PMSG at 15 IU/kg BW, im injection), H2 (CIDR+GEN 0.1 mg/kg BW, iv injection); H3 (CIDR+PMSG at 15 IU/kg BW and GEN at 0.1 mg/kg BW, iv injection). Results indicated that all animals exhibited estrous and the onset for H1 was significantly earlier than for H2 and H0. The duration of estrous for P3 was significantly longer than for P2, while that for H1 was significantly longer than for H2 and H0. Gestation rate was 93.75%, birth rate was 83.33% and length of gestation was 147.76±1.54 d. Birth weight for P3 was significantly higher than for P2. It is concluded that CIDR, PMSG, and genistein enhanced the estrous characteristics in Palu fat-tailed sheep but did not affect litter size and birth weight.

Abstract

Local pigs are one of Indonesia's livestock germplasm and have an important role in the rural farming system in the North Sulawesi. The aim of this study was to identify the phenotypic characteristic of local pigs in the North Sulawesi. The study was carried out as a field level survey and investigation through direct observation of phenotypic traits of local pigs in eight villages which is located in the two main regions of the North Sulawesi, namely Minahasa Utara (Darunu, Sonsilo, Marinsow and Kalinaun) and Bolaang Mongondow (Pindolili, Baturapa, Sangtombolang and Tanjung Sidupa). A total of 212 pigs were used to observe the parameters of body weight, body length, heart grith, height at withers, head length and ear length. Data were analyzed using general linear model and discriminant analysis. The results showed that body weight and linear body measurement of local pigs in eight locations in the North Sulawesi were significantly different (p < 0.05) with the following traits; average body weight of 27.67±12.90 kg, body length of 70.62±14.21 cm, heart grith of 62.89±13.30 cm, height at withers of 44.73±8.86 cm, head length of 25.06 ±5.96 cm, ear length of 15.6±4.05 cm and hock circumference of 9.87±1.31 cm.

Abstract

In Indonesia, there are three housing systems: sometimes open, semi-closed and closed. This study aimed to analyze the effect of microclimatic conditions, NH3, and E. coli levels on broiler productivity in open, semi-closed, and closed houses during the dry season. The research took place in June - August 2019, when the air temperature was 28°-34°C during the day, while at night, the air temperature was around 21°-25°C with rainfall < 60 mm/month. The material used was the Lohmann strain broiler. Observations were made in six house units consisting of two open house units with a total of 5,000 chickens/house unit, two semi-closed units with a total of 18,000 chickens/house unit, and two closed house units with a total of 33,000 chickens/house unit. This research is survey research, with the experimental parameters being temperature (oC), humidity (%), wind speed (m/s), NH3 (ppm) and E. coli (CFU/mL), body weight (g/bird), FI (g/bird/day), FCR, IP, mortality, and IOFC. Based on the study's results in open, semi-closed, and closed houses, there were differences (P<0.05) in temperature, humidity, wind speed, and NH3, whereas in E. coli they were not significantly different. In broiler productivity, the type of house affected body weight (P<0.05), while on FI, FCR, IP, mortality, and IOFC were not significantly different (P<0.05). The conclusion is that the range of temperature, humidity, and wind speed in all houses is still in the standard range of broiler maintenance. NH3 and E. coli levels were below the threshold that chickens could tolerate, although the highest levels were in closed houses. This affects the BW of broilers in open and semi-closed at weeks 1, 2, and 3, which is higher than in closed houses
