Abstract

EFL Learners’ distress in listening to English records in the classroom is one of the matters commonly discovered in Indonesian middle scholars. Listening activities bring students to the mastery of other skills; speaking, writing, and reading. Total Physical Response was created to enhance the students’ ability in listening to a spoken foreign language discourse by giving a physical response when they hear aparticular command. This study works toward finding the effect of Total Physical Response utilization on students’ listening comprehension at MTs Negeri 4 Banyuwangi. The samples of this study were two groups of students; 30 students of VII A and 30 students of VII B. Class VII B was assigned as the control group, while Class VII A as the experimental group where both pre-test and post-test were conducted to each group. The experimental group was taught by using TPR, while in the control group learning is carried out in the way teachers normally teach, that is using Three-phase technique. The hypothesis was tested using independent sample t-test and analyzed by using SPSS. Total Physical Response could administer some refinement on students’ listening, which is evidently manifested in the result of the post-test. Students in experiment group achieved better score than those in control group. This study suggests the use of Total Physical Response to the early middle scholars as an alternative to other teaching methods.

Abstract

It is crucial for educators to be creative in making new innovation for online learning -- one of which is by utilizing the use of modern technology (Astini, 2020; Atsani, 2020) -- especially for speaking skills where interaction among peers is needed. In online classroom where direct interaction is not possible, learning process must be carried out through a balance synchronous and asynchronous activities (Yamagata-Lynch, 2014). This study intends to investigate the speaking ability of the 5th semester students who use eStudy Moodle for online learning covering aspects of synchronous and asynchronous activity (using LMS and Google Meet video conference attached in eStudy). The method used is a combination of quantitative (speaking test) and qualitative research method (questionnaire). After analyzing the data, it was found that the speaking ability of the students can be categorized good (A-B) and most of them enjoyed online learning using eStudy. Their speaking ability is most likely achieved due to the convenience of learning speaking using eStudy. Despite the fact that 57.6% of students thought online learning during the pandemic is ineffective, more than 70% of students agreed that online learning using eStudy is well-applied in the Argumentative Speaking class and 81% recommended lecturers to use eStudy in the learning process.

Abstract

Cohesive devices are linguistic elements or techniques used to establish connections and create coherence within a text. They serve to link ideas, sentences, and paragraphs, making the overall discourse more cohesive and facilitating the smooth flow of information. Cohesive devices contribute to the logical organization and understanding of a written or spoken text. By employing cohesive devices effectively, writers can enhance the coherence and cohesion of their texts, allowing readers to follow and understand the information more easily. This study aims to examine how cohesive devices are utilized in recount paragraphs written by students as well as to identify the challenges and underlying reasons for their difficulties in using such devices. The research involved 20 tenth-grade students from MAN 2 Jember and adopted a qualitative analysis research design. The data collection process encompassed documentation, observations, and student interviews. The analysis focused on two aspects of cohesion: lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation) and grammatical cohesion (reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction). The findings reveal the following: (a) Students employed five types of cohesive devices in their recount paragraph writing, with reference (31.29%) and conjunction (28.75%) being the most frequent, followed by substitution (12.72%), ellipsis (1.78%), as well as reiteration (13.48%) and collocation (11.95%); (b) Students exhibited varying levels of familiarity and competence with different cohesive devices. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive instruction and support to enhance students' proficiency in using cohesive devices. To address the identified challenges, pedagogical interventions are recommended.

Abstract

In regard to the current innovation on multi-dimensional learning systems in industrial era 4.0, teachers and educators worldwide strive for students to have a strong foundation in mastering English, one of which is speaking skills.  Teachers help students build self-confidence and provide innovative technology that enables them to practice and focus on their own unique needs outside the classroom. There are alternatives to bring these goals into reality: first is to create a positive, fun learning environment both at school and at home. Second, to provide new experiences for students to directly interact with foreigners who teach and use English as their first language. This research investigatesstudents’ speaking skills in the lower-class group of elementary school (28 second graders, aged seven to eight years old). The study also thoroughly explored how foreign teachers’ fun activities during classroom hours can affect students’ speaking. In order to find answers to the research problems, simple conversation to test the speaking ability was conducted. After the test, the teacher helped students fill out a questionnaire to know their perception of learning with foreign teachers and their opinion on doing interactive games and outdoor activities during classroom-hour. The speaking ability of the second graders in SD Negeri Jember Lor 3 is sufficient, and they can pronounce some vocabularies correctly and conduct simple conversations with foreigners. The adequate mastery of the conversation may be following the pattern of various determinants, especially factors concerning the help from foreign teachers who model pronunciation, sentence stress, grammar, intonation, and vocabulary in a valid and veritable accent.
