Abstract

The main goal of this research is to determine "What cultural awareness is represented in the English textbooks Pathway to English Grade X General Programme?”, “What cultural awareness is represented in the English textbooks Pathway to English Grade X Elective Programme?”, and “What are the comparison between two English textbooks?”. Two English textbooks from the same author and publisher but used in different programmes for senior high school were chosen for this study, they are Pathway to English Grade X, General Programme; and Pathway to English Grade X, Elective Programme. This study is part of the qualitative approach to library research. To make it easier to understand, Percentage-based quantitative analysis is used. Researchers collect data from English textbooks in the context of textbook analysis to come clean about the way culture awareness contents are represented in two English textbooks. The findings show that all English textbooks presented cultural awareness content, and the cultural awareness contents in each English textbook used by Senior High School as EFL have covered four aspects of cultural content for Book I, and seven aspects of cultural content for Book II. Although not all aspects of the cultural category are covered in the English textbook, it is clear that the cultural content exceeds half of the total. The percentage of those is as follows: Book I have 72,80 per cent and Book II have 70 per cent. This suggests that the authors should use several different cultural awareness aspects in their English textbook as EFL.

Abstract

Native speakerism is an ideology in which people believe that real and correct English comes from the people who were born in Europe and use English as their mother tongue. This point of view may have an impact on "native speakers" and "foreign speakers"' professional life in English language teaching (ELT), particularly in Indonesia. This research aims to know how this ideology affects the Indonesian EFL students' perceptions of "native-speaker" and "non-native speaker" that refer to the educators. A quantitative descriptive method was chosen for this research to find out the perception of EFL University students in the context of TEFL. The population and sample of the research were the students from English Education Department at a State University. Based on the result, showed that students' judgments tended to be more persuasive when they claimed that competent English teachers also qualified as "native speakers" who possess adequate mastery of the language. However, although the majority of students believe that "native speakers" are the best teachers, they do not believe that their "non-native" instructors are ineffective because, on occasion, they are more knowledgeable about crucial English concepts like grammar than "native speakers."

Abstract

Teaching materials based on Cross Cultural Understanding (CCU) are educational resources that provide information on cross-cultural understanding, presenting reading texts complemented with questions and learning activities focused on the cultural contrasts between Indonesia and foreign countries. The innovation of teaching materials for pedagogical purposes is crucial in the learning process. Hence, this activity aims to assist high school English teachers in Lubuklinggau through a Cross Cultural Understanding approach, enabling them to develop effective teaching materials. This initiative highlights the importance of cultural understanding in English language teaching, with an emphasis on contrasting local and target cultures. Involving 40 teachers from 23 schools, the training included presentations on cultural integration, the CCU concept, examples of CCU-based teaching materials, and the creation of questions oriented towards High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The results indicate that the training significantly enhanced the teachers' understanding and skills in integrating cultural aspects into English language teaching materials, as well as their awareness of the importance of cross-cultural sensitivity. This is reflected in the high satisfaction rates, with 87.5% of the participants affirming that the training content met their needs and 90% feeling they had directly benefited. This study underscores the significance of CCU training in professional development for teachers and highlights the necessity for more inclusive and culturally sensitive educational approaches in both global and local contexts
