Abstract

This study was aimed to find out the Speaking Problems at Seven Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Junior High School Pematangsiantar. This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The respondents of this study were Junior High School Students at Seven Grade of SMP Negeri 3 Junior High School Pematangsiantar. The objective of this research is to find out the students' problems in speaking skill. This research instruments were interview and observation. Based on the results of the observation and interview, the students have problem in speaking. The problems were consisted of poor in grammar, lack of vocabulary and meaning, pronunciation, lack of confident, fear of making mistake, shyness and anxiety. From the problems the dominantly problems is pronunciation, vocabulary, shyness. To overcome this problem, teachers need to use several ways or to have strategies such as using talking stick, role play, choosing interesting topic, etc. This research can facilitate the teachers in knowing the problems in speaking faced by the students. Abstract

This research investigated the application of Scientific Approach-Based English Learning Strategy (SABELS) in online learning for higher education level. Twenty items of closed-ended questionnaire were designed to indicate learners’ satisfaction and one item of open-ended questionnaire was to list some obstacles during online learning. The sample of this research was 215 learners who contracted Curriculum and Material Development (CMD) course in the fifth semester. It was found that the respondents were very satisfied towards the application of this strategy in online course. Some problems encountered by learners were unstable internet network, frequent power outage, slow response by lecturer in chatting, time consumption during online team work, and lack of motivation in self-learning. In conclusion, this new strategy has encouraged learners to do collaborative, research-based, and character building-based learning. Further study is suggested especially on investigating its effectiveness through experimental research.

Abstract

Socialization of free tutoring activities is one of the efforts to accelerate the education acceleration program so that national education goals can be achieved. The socialization of this free tutoring activity was carried out by a team of volunteers from University of HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar with students at the elementary level located at UPTD SD Negeri 122358 Pematang Siantar. The purpose of this activity is to find out problems related to learning after the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact if character-based thematic learning programs with free tutoring are implemented. From the results of this training activity it was known that the enthusiasm of the students was very pleasant because they received free tutoring that they had never enjoyed before. This activity develops student motivation at school. The biggest hope of the students and teachers and leaders at the school is that this activity program can be sustainable so that it can help students.
