Abstract

This study is aimed to know to find out the types of Socratic questions used by the students of seventh semester in English Department of FKIP UHN Medan. This research was conducted by descriptive qualitative where the subject is seventh English Department students in Nommensen University academic year 2019/2020 on Seminar Class and the data is students’questions. After analizing questions, it was found that Socratic questions used by the seventh semester of English students in FKIP UHN Medan are questions and clarification, questions that prope purposes, questions that probe assumptions, Question that Probe Information, Reason, Evidence, and Cause, Question about viewpoints or perspectives, Questions that Probe Implication and Consequences, Question about question, Question that Probe Concept, and Questions that probe Inferences and Interpretation. The most dominant is Question that Probe Information, Reason, Evidence, and Cause. It means that the students’ ability in making questions in seminar on ELT presentation is still on the level of getting information from the text, less to have capacity to view or to judge things from some other perspectives, less of preparing themselves reading the seminar paper before the presentation starts. The writer assumed that the students lack of reading.

Abstract

Pandemi Covid-19 di dunia membuat berbagai usaha dilakukan untuk memutus mata rantai penularan, salah satunya membersihkan tangan dengan hand sanitizer dan menggunakan masker. Masyarakat di sekitar kampus Universitas HKBP Nommensen Pematangsiantar masih terlihat belum terbiasa menggunakan masker pada saat keluar rumah. Demikian juga upaya preventif pada saat keluar rumah, dengan menyediakan hand sanitizer belum tercapai dengan baik dikarenakan harganya semakin meningkat tajam. Tujuan dari pengabdian masayarakat ini adalah untuk memberdayakan masyarakat dalam penggunaan masker dan hand sanitizer pada saat keluar rumah. Metode pangabdian yaitu berupa donasi masker dan hand sanitizer serta pemaparan cara pemakaiannya secara lisan. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah 400 orang sasaran sudah mendapatkan hand sanitizer dan 800 orang mendapatkan masker. Dengan demikian, masyarakat sekitar pada akhrinya dapat menggunakan masker dan perbekalan hand sanitizer pada saat keluar rumah.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' ability to write an essay in the descriptive text genre. Descriptive text is a genre that serves to explain something to the reader through writing. To make it easier for researchers to conduct research, researchers use the CAR (Classroom Action Research) method to make it easier for researchers to be closer to the sample. The sample in this study were students of SMPN 5 Percut Sei Tuan with a total of 30 students. Researchers have conducted research with five meetings in four stages, namely planning, and observing. action, and reflection. Quantitative and Qualitative data are tools used in collecting data. Quantitatively, the value of the students' descriptive text is as data, which has been carried out in two cycles. Started the pre-test with a total score of 1953,3 with an average of 64.5. In the first cycle, the total score was 2204.05 with an average of 73.4. The researcher again conducted a post-test in the second cycle to achieve the requirements for teaching success, namely 85%. In cycle 2 the total score was 2621.6 with an average of 87.3. This proves that there is a significant change in student scores using the example non-example method. Qualitative data taken from observation sheets, interviews, and writer's diaries show that it is easier for students to understand teaching and can attract students' attention with an image applicator that guides students to write an essay.

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of hamburger strategy on writing descriptive text. Hamburger strategy is a writing organizer strategy that visually outlines the key components of a paragraph. When writing by using hamburger strategy, the students will learn to remember how to build the paragraph and the importance of each component. It was conducted by using experimental quantitative research. The population of this study is the first semester  students of English Department Nommensen Medan. The writer takes 50 students as the sample and they are devided into two groups by using random sampling. The first group was  group A as Experimental class which is taught by implementing hamburger strategy while the second group is Group B as control class which is taught by using conventional method. Oral test is used  as the instrument of collecting the data. This test consists of two types, namely pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows t-observed that is 3. 58, which  is higher than t-table that is 1.676 at the level significance  (p: 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df) 48. It means that Ha is accepted while Ho is rejected, therefore it is concluded that hamburger  strategy  significantly affects on writing descriptive text of the first semester students of English Department in Nommensen University Medan academic year 2016/2017. It is suggested for the students of English Department as source of valuable knowledge and information when conducting a research related to the study. It is also suggested that teachers of English subject should implement hamburger strategy as one of alternative in teaching writing to increase students’ writing ability.Keywords:  hamburger strategy, writing hortatory exposition text

Abstract

Membaca pemahaman hanyalah sebuah frase untuk kemampuan membaca di mana fokusnya adalah pada pemahaman daripada mengucapkan atau memuat kata-kata. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan apakah pemahaman membaca siswa dapat ditingkatkan atau tidak setelah diajarkan strategi Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN). Desain penelitian untuk penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari sumber kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Lembar observasi, dokumentasi, dan lembar angket digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data kualitatif. Data kuantitatif berasal dari tes pemahaman bacaan pre-test, siklus I, dan siklus II. Jumlah nilai siswa pada setiap tes adalah sebagai berikut: pada pre-test 1739, pada post-test siklus I 2.205, dan pada post-test siklus II 2.510. Berdasarkan nilai siswa pada setiap tes, penulis menemukan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa pada setiap siklus meningkat dari 57,9%, 73,5%, menjadi 83,6%. Setelah menggunakan strategi Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) dalam mengajar pemahaman bacaan, penulis menemukan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa pada post-test II berada di atas KKM. Artinya penerapan strategi Personal Vocabulary Notes (PVN) dapat meningkatkan skor pemahaman membaca siswa.

Abstract

The program of Pengabdian Kepada Masysarakat (Public Community Service) is aimed the literacy improvement training for elementary and junior high school children aims to provide students as well as teachers with information assistance about the importance of literacy for the development of knowledge in Indonesian society. This activity was carried out by lecturers and students from the English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, HKBP Nommensen University with students from Czech University. The program of PKM Activity was started on July 25th, 2022, and ended on July 26th, 2022. It is very clear that the cause of the low literacy ability (in terms of reading) is the oral tradition that is still rooted in society. In addition, related to elementary schools, the school system still does not provide opportunities for literacy traditions to students. This also happened to students at SD and SMP HKBP Sidorame Medan. This problem is trying to be minimized by conducting community service programs related to literacy for elementary and junior high school students. The Project represents one of the important areas of development of reading literacy in school. The most positive feature is the fact that there are large numbers of identified target groups, not only students but also teachers. Teachers themselves should expose students to literacy. Literacy should become a culture.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa di kelas virtual mendengarkan. Sebanyak 40 siswa terlibat dalam penelitian ini. Penulis menerapkan metode kualitatif dengan kuesioner dan wawancara semi-terstruktur sebagai alat utama penelitian untuk mengumpulkan data. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kesulitan siswa dalam menyimak kelas virtual dibagi menjadi 3 bagian utama kesulitan isi materi, kesulitan pendengar/siswa, dan kesulitan pengaturan fisik. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan kosa kata, aksen pembicara, kecepatan bicara, kurangnya konsentrasi, dan kualitas materi rekaman adalah masalah utama yang dihadapi siswa. Hasil penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa ketika siswa mengalami kesulitan belajar menggunakan kelas virtual, mereka tidak menikmatinya dan tidak termotivasi untuk mempelajari materi menyimak. Pembelajaran menyimak dengan hasil virtual perlu lebih ditingkatkan lagi. Dosen perlu menyadari tantangan belajar mahasiswa. Dosen dapat membantu mahasiswa dalam menciptakan strategi pembelajaran yang efisien dan pada akhirnya meningkatkan keterampilan mendengar bahasa Inggris dan memiliki pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang tantangan belajar mereka.

Abstract

This study related to students' speaking ability using the Show and Tell method at eighth grade students of SMP Singosari Delitua. The purpose of this research was to find out whether the show and tell method can enhance students' speaking ability. Population and sample of this research was eighth grade students of SMP Singosari Delitua. To achieve the research objectives, the researcher used classroom action as a method in this research. The researcher also used pre-test and posttest in assessing the result of speaking ability. The author uses two cycles. The results of this study was that the show and tell method can enhance students' speaking ability. This can be proven from the test calculations on both cycles. In the pre-test, the average score of students was 54.85. In the post-test, cycle I the average score of speaking ability was 72 and the average score in the post-test of cycle II was 82.85. Based on these data, it can be concluded that there was a significant increase in students' speaking ability by applying the show and tell method.Keywords: Applying, Show And Tell, Speaking

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan Untuk mengetahui pengaruh Model Pembelajaran Talking Stick Dalam Pembelajaran Pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewarganegaraan Untuk Meningkatkan Hasil Belajar Siswa Kelas VIII SMP Negeri 1 Pollung. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif Kuantitatif. Menurut sugiono (2017) bahwa metode kuantitatif adalah penelitian yang ada penelitiannya berupa angka-angka dan analisis menggunakan statistik. Karena penelitian ini berbentuk deskriftif kuantitatif, maka penulis hanya menggambarkan. Rancangan penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah post tes. Semua anggota mempunyai kesempatan yang sama menjadi sampel penelitian. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dan pembahasan disimpulkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh penerapan model pembelajaran Talking Stick dengan meningkatnya hasil belajar murid pada mata pelajaran PPKn. Hal ini dibutikan dengan rata-rata kelas eksperimen yaitu 76,5 dan kelas control 67,13. Persentase ketuntasan murid pada kelas eksperimen menunjukkan 76,66% yang lebih besar dari kelas control dengan persentase 50%. Hal ini menunjukkan keberhasilan pembelajaran pada kelas eksperimen lebih besar dari pada kelas kontrol.

Abstract

The accuracy its very important when does translation activity, in this modern life many people using the Google Translate to help them translating a word, phrase, or a sentence, but sometimes it can be meaningless or not accurate. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate how accurately Google Translate has translated English verb tenses into Indonesian. This study used a qualitative method to reasearch the accuracy. The data's primary source was a translation that was produced by Google. The source of the data from the subtitles of The Boss Baby. There were numerous methods used to get the data, including: 1).Downloaded the Movie of The Boss Baby from the internet and, 2). The researcher selected 30 data of verb phrases from subtitle of The Boss Baby and make it in the table. To analyze the data, the techniques were : The raw data will be translated from Source Language (English) to Target Language (Indonesian) by Google Translate and then, The researcher analyzed the data by using Moorkens based on Nababan (2018:59), There were three types of translation: accurate, less accurate, and inaccurate. The results of this research showed that out of 30 pieces of data, 25 had accurate translations, 3 had less accurate translations, and 2 had inaccurate translations. The researcher reached the conclusion that Google Translate's translation of English verb tenses was correct.
