Abstract

The objectives of this study were to investigate the use of Google Classroom in improving reading comprehension, how students’ perceptions when engaging with Google Classroom in the learning process, and what obstacles encountered in implementing it. The methodology applied in this study is mixed-method, including both quantitative and qualitative methods which are conducted among 27 students on grade XI of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 4 Jakarta. While the data was collected by reading comprehension tests, interviewing students, and filling the questionnaire to gain their perceptions about Google Classroom. The result showed that using Google classroom could improve students’ scores on reading comprehension; this indicated by comparing pre-test and post-test. Regarding students’ perceptions of using Google Classroom, it revealed that some students still preferred to study in the classroom since they could interact directly and easily with the teacher. Contrary, some of them would choose learning by Google Classroom because it is more interesting and easier to access whenever and whatever they are. The obstacles were encountered in the learning processes are such as unstable internet connection in the school and unskilled teachers to operate the application. Therefore, using technology has to consider the devices and sophisticated equipment to support a better system in the learning process. Besides, the humans to operate the system should be trained well in order for the learning process is going smoothly.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social inequality portrayed in the Parasit movie directed by Bong Joon Ho. For research method, a qualitative approach is chosen to be applied which is content analysis as research design. In collecting the data, the writers use the Parasite movie as an object of the research, and search a lot of references from the internet and libraries to support the theories as baselines of analysis. Parasite movie depicts the two families’ lives, Park's family and Kim's family, where the social conditions and the daily lifestyles are very contrastive; the first family is rich and wealth and the later one is poor and deprivation. These social inequalities reflect a social phenomenon in the real world which becomes the motives for fraudulent and greedy character and gradually leads to criminal actions. The gaps between both families are demonstrated in some aspects, such as economy and work, education, house, food, and fashion. And the disparities shown by those elements indicate where the social class they belong and what the impact to their life.

Abstract

Feminism is a women's movement in seeking equality to be equal to men in any way, including relationships. In this study, the writers’ purpose of analyzing The Girl on the Train movie is to find out the kind of feminism, the causes of feminism that influence the main character, and the moral message contained in the movie. The writers use qualitative research methods in describing and analyzing this movie. The writers also do library research to find many references from books or the internet which are useful to support this paper, especially the theories. After analyzing the movie, the writers found one of four kinds of feminism which is Liberal Feminism. Liberal feminism is women's liberation about certain aspects of themselves or their lives. They claim that women have the same capacities as men, and have the same rational thinking as men. Another result, there are also two causes of feminism that influence the main character in this movie, namely betrayal, and domestic abuse. Besides that, this movie sends moral messages. This movie tells about women who are treated unfairly and experience many painful things in the relationship. The women must dare to defend themselves and fight men who are cruel to them. And every woman will help another woman in any situation, even if it threatens her.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out if the ability to speak English effectively by 10th graders at SMA IT Rahmaniya was improved by using YouTube. This paper focused on implementing YouTube as a method for teaching speaking that is different, interesting, and fun, while creating a classroom atmosphere that is comfortable and increases students’ enthusiasm for learning. This paper used the qualitative descriptive method as the method of research. The result of using YouTube was very effective because it allowed students to speak with more confidence and expression. They also did not have to worry about the phrases they used when speaking because they were able to see how foreigners speak English properly and correctly.BAHASA INDONESIA ABSTRAK: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui peningkatan ketermapilan berbicara bahasa inggris secara efektif dengan memanfaatkan media YouTube di SMA IT Rahmaniyah, untuk kelas X. Penelitian berfokus pada implementasi Youtube untuk pengajaran berbicara yang berbeda, menarik, menyenangkan, menjadikan suasana dikelas nyaman dan meningkatkan semangat belajar untuk siswa kelas X SMA. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Hasil dari penggunaan media YouTube selama pembelajaran di kelas sangat efektif, karena siswa berbicara dengan percaya diri dan lebih berekspresif. Siswa juga tidak perlu khawatir mengenai frasa yang mereka gunakan ketika berbicara bahasa inggris, karena mereka sudah melihat bagaimana orang asing berbicara bahasa inggris dengan baik dan benar.

Abstract

This paper discussed feminism in the Little Women movie directed by Greta Gerwig in 2019. This movie is adapted from Louisa May Alcott’s novel which was written initially in 1868. This study aimed to find out how feminism is described through the leading character. The other objective is to search the types of feminism on main character refers to Tong and Botts’s theory. The writer used descriptive qualitative methods which content analysis of the movie. All data is presented in the form of words and sentences and used library research as a way to collect data by reading and selecting quotations from the Little Women movie. As the result, it is found that there are five types of feminism: Liberal Feminism type, Marxist Feminism and Socialist type, Radical libertarian Feminism type, Psychoanalytic Feminism type, and Postmodern Feminism type. Besides the types of feminism, the discussions depicted feminism impact to the characters among women and sends the views and values in women personal life with connected to the relationship of family matters as well.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the politeness strategies used by the teachers and students, and how the politeness affects to the student’s compliance. The focus is on directive and expressive speech acts in English for Foreign Language (EFL) Class. The subjects of this study were three lecturers and the students of three English classes. In data collecting procedure, the researcher used observation techniques. The observation was used to record the audio and video of teaching and learning process from the beginning until the end of the class. The audio-record of teaching and learning process will be transcribed into convention transcript, and then the transcript will be selected and classified into ten maxims in doing politeness strategies.  The analytical part adopts the viewpoints of Leech’s (2014) “The Components Maxims of the General Strategy of Politeness”. In the data analysis, it is found that 1) the teachers used ten maxims in their communication to the students. They are tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim agreement maxim, Obligation (of S to O) maxim, sympathy maxim, modest maxim, Obligation (of O to S) maxim, Opinion reticence maxim, and feeling reticence maxim. 2) The lecturers dominantly used tact maxim in their directive speech acts to the students. The last part of this paper aims at summarizing the implications that this paper, its theoretical summary, and its research, have for teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class.

Abstract

Introducing creative thinking through the movie will be a great way because movies such as Aladdin can be enjoyed by everyone from a wide range of ages. Making the concept of creative thinking will be familiar not only for adults, but also the important thing for children who have been growing up in the process of their lives. By analyzing this movie, the writer aimed to figure out the kinds of creative thinking and its impact on the main characters in Aladin’s movie. The writer applied the Descriptive Qualitative method to obtain and represent the data. The process of collecting data by doing library research, reading some theories to support the analysis, watching the movie as the object of the research. After analysis, it found the kinds of creative thinking in the main characters of Aladdin are only three out of four categories; they are reframing, mind mapping, and insight. Besides, the impact of creative thinking reflected are increase confidence and arise diverse thinking which generating innovative ideas to solve the problem and give benefit to the individual and the community.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate how the implementation of the cooperative learning method on students’ performance in the learning process and to find out its impact on students’ oral proficiency. In this study, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by observation and doing pre-test and post-test. The research samples are thirty seventh-grade students in SMP Tarsisius 1 Jakarta. After applying the method, the result showed that cooperative learning could help students work together in groups and solve problems or tasks effectively. During the discussion, students are more engaged with others, and the interactions are more vivid. They have slight awareness to achieve the goals, especially in group work. In this condition, the cooperation among the intelligent and weak students has shown. So they do not only focus on the individual goal but the group goals. Besides, cooperative learning also supports enhancing students’ oral performance. The indication can be seen in pre-test and post-test scores. The students speaking scores were increased after the implementation of cooperative learning.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the leadership of Phineas Taylor Barnum that exists in the main character of The Greatest Showman movie. Leadership is an important part of an organization. Leadership is the process by which an individual influences a group of people to achieve a goal. This musical movie tells the story of a circus founder, Phineas Taylor Barnum with a leadership attitude. In this descriptive qualitative study, the writers collect the data from the scene and the conversation in the movie and material with a variety of resources such as books, journals, articles, and other references. After watching the movie repeatedly and collecting the data by paying attention to the conversation in the movie's scenes, the writers study the whole story before continuing to the next step, then analyzing what the story is all about. The types of leadership that were found in this movie are (1) Democratic Leadership, (2) Laissez-faire Leadership, and (3) Transformational Leadership. While there are three impacts of leadership that indeed to Phineas Taylor Barnum as the main character in The Greatest Showman, namely (1) Inspiring Confidence For Others, (2) Creating A Respectful Environment, and Raisings Loyalty and Trust. This movie shows many things to be a good leader who can bring a big impact on people. We are all leaders in our lives. So, this movie gives us so many things that we can learn to have a better life.

Abstract

Transgender has been recognized and is being a popular perspective nowadays, but still being debated in society as a gender issue. This real case of life was brought up in an epic movie by Tom Hooper, titled The Danish Girl. The purpose of this study is to discover Einar Wegener's transsexual character as he seeks his true identity, which leads him to become a woman. The movie is described and analyzed by using a qualitative descriptive method. Referring to the transsexualism theory, Einar Wegener’s character includes all of the characteristics of a transsexual, such as behavior confusion with the actual gender, the eagerness to be free from the main gender characteristics, willingness to be characterized as the opposite sex, etc. However, because transsexuality is a sexual deviation that differs from the norm, the main character must deal with negative consequences such as family problems, depression, insecurity, self-susceptibility, and health issues that lead to death due to his inability to survive after undergoing a second surgery. The movie idea which based on the true story depicts the complex problems arise in gender reassignment and its consequences toward personal life and the environment.
