Abstract

This research aimed at describing the difficulties in online learning faced by the students during the first semester of Academic Year 2020/2021. The method of the research was descriptive quantitative by using online questionnaire with four indicators of learning obstacles for collecting the data. The sample of the research was 35 students of English Education Department of Faculty of Education and Teachers’ Training of Universitas Lancang Kuning. After analyzing the data by using descriptive statistics, it is found that the major difficulty is about the students’ physical constraints indicator. The score was about M=3.11 with “moderate” level. Then, non-social environment indicator was about M=2.57 with “moderate” level. The next difficulty was facility. The mean score was about 2.8 with “moderate” level. The next difficulty was from the educator. The mean score was about 2.13 with “moderate” level. The last difficulty was the students’ psychological constraints. The mean score was about 2.07 with “moderate” level. In conclusion, online learning is better implemented in well preparation. It needs all the elements’ readiness such as students, educators, institution, and also the government. It must include the mental and physical readiness. For organizing the online learning, both students and educator should be supported by facility such as qualified laptop or gadget and also fast internet connection. Besides that, lecturer should have qualified competence in organizing the online class so the students motivate in following the class. The last is about the environment. Having well and comfortable environment basically increases the students and lecturer motivation in conducting the online class.

Abstract

Abstract as one of the academic genres has its own organizational framework and linguistic features. The abstract describes the important information of work or research as briefly and accurately as possible. The purpose of this research is to identify about the grammatical errors made by undergraduate students in writing of their thesis abstract in English. So, the type of this study is descriptive qualitative. In this study, the responden is the undergraduate students of Biology Department, Faculty of Education and Teachers Training, LancangKuning University in 2016. There are 43 abstracts of biology department graduated in April 2016 period. Finally, the researcher concludes that the grammatical errors found on the biological students' theses abstract, Lancan g kuning University in writing abstract are 4 errors namely_omission, addition, misformation. misordering.

Abstract

Abstract: Language is not only used for daily conversation, but also is used in education, research, and science both written and spoken. There are four basic skills in learning English should be mastered by students such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. To support all of four skills students should master speaking. One of the ways in improving speaking skill is through the Color Vowel Chart use. The aims of this study are divided into two; first, exploring information about the Color Vowel Chart, the techniques/strategies, the ways/procedures, and the assessment used in implementing the Color Vowel Chart in teaching speaking, second, investigating information in terms of students’ speaking achievement. This research is a qualitative study that uses theses, articles/journals and other literature as the main data sources where research that produces information in the form of notes and descriptive data contained in the text under study. The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach with descriptive method. The findings show that the students can increase their speaking skill by using the Color Vowel Chart. This happens because the success of using Color Vowel Chart in teaching speaking in is determined by some factors such as the media, the techniques/strategies, the ways/procedures, and the assessment used in implementing the Color Vowel Chart in teaching speaking. It proves by the results of the previous researchers’ studies. The previous researchers also used the Color Vowel Chart, techniques/strategies, ways/procedures, and the assessment. Fortunately, students can improve their speaking skill by the Color Vowel Chart. Key Words: Color Vowel Chart, Teaching, Speaking

Abstract

Information Communication Technology (ICT) has been applied and integrated into education that enhances teachers to explore various teaching and learning strategies, materials, and media. This study aims to discover the experiences of English teachers in the use of Canva, an ICT application, to create an attractive presentation of teaching English. The researchers employed Generic Qualitative Research to investigate the challenges and strategies in using the application. The researchers interviewed two English teachers responsible for teaching English at the high school, junior high school, and elementary school levels at the SMART Indonesia Pekanbaru. The instruments used in this research were interviews and documentation. To analyze the data, the researchers transcribed the interview and employed thematic analysis by identifying patterns or finding themes in the interview data. The researchers found two challenges the teachers faced in the research findings: low internet connectivity and the limitation of templates availed in the free version Canva application. In the meantime, to cope with the challenges, the teachers used two strategies, providing learning modules and adding pictures for an attractive appearance. In advance, the researchers found that the teachers benefitted from Canva's application in English classroom teaching. In conclusion, though English teachers experience challenges with the Canva application, they can anticipate them and benefit from using the learning application for teaching English.

Abstract

Abstract This study investigated the occupational English language needs of traffic police officers in Pekanbaru. Most police officers are graduates of the Police Academy. To study at the Police Academy, students must first complete either a high school or one of the four Police Academies. Although the intensive language training in the Police Academy is often considered adequate for most officers' needs, those officers who come from other backgrounds are often left behind. Even in the case of the Police Academy graduates, all their English language training is based on the principles of General English, and does not necessarily prepare them for the occupational-specific language needs they face on the job. This study set out to explore therefore, exactly to what extent the traffic police officers' English language knowledge is in fact adequate. Data, in this study, were collected by observing, making a conversation, recording, and taking notes. In collecting the data, the writer takes an involvement with the subject’s conversation every week whether as an active participant or only as an observer. The tool that can be used in collecting the data is a pen, a book, and a hand phone, this tools use for documenting the interaction between traffic police with foreigners. The observation can be done when the subjects making a conversation with the foreigners. As a result, most of them are reluctant to communicate with foreigners event with their partner.
